Chapter Text
The door chimed as you opened the door. You glanced around and saw that the video store was dead. Dead as in there were no one inside apart from the people who worked there. One in particular caught your eye as he turned his head after hearing the door chime. You quickly dipped your head and disappeared down the horror movie section.
It was a few weeks into spring break and you had been coming here quite a bit. Not for movies but because Steve worked there. You had had a crush on Steve since forever but you never thought he knew who you were.
You scanned the movie selection. Your eyes found what you were looking for and picked up the first Friday the 13th movie, a small smile appearing on your face.
“That’s a good one.” you heard someone say behind you, which made you jump, dropping the video onto the ground. You turned around and saw Steve standing there. He bent over, picked up the VHS and handed it to you.
“Thanks.” you said as you took the VHS from him but then placed it back on the self. “I’ve seen it a lot.” you explained as you looked away from him and scanned the shelves once more.
Steve reached over your shoulder, his front almost touching your back. You watched as he grabbed one and held it for you to take. You reached up and took it, slowly turning around to face him. You looked down at the VHS and saw it was one you hadn’t seen before.
“Texas Chainsaw Massacre?” you mumbled as you turned it around and read the back. Steve stood there and watched you read it, a small smile appearing on his face.
“Leatherface is one of the greatest Villans ever.” Steve said excitedly. You turned the VHS over once more and studied the cover.
“Do you also have A New Hope? My younger brother is obsessed with it.” you asked, tearing your eyes away from the VHS and looked back up at Steve. You couldn’t help but melt a little at the smile on his face. Steve nodded and turned around. You followed him into the Sci-Fi section and without hesitation, Steve pulled A New Hope off the shelf and held it out for you.
“Here you go. I’m surprised we’ve still got a copy.” Steve said as you took the VHS. “Will that be all today Y/N?” Steve asked and your heart jolted a little as he said your name. You were also surprised that he even knew your name.
“Yeah thanks.” you said and without another word, you followed him over to the front counter. You placed the VHSs onto the counter and rummaged through your small bag for some money. You pulled out the right amount and placed it on the counter. Steve went to grab it, his fingers brushing against yours. You quickly pulled your hand away as he placed the money into the till and handed you some change.
“Let me know what you think of it when you return it.” Steve said as you made to turn away. You nodded your head as you slowly made your way to the door to leave. You stopped for a moment before turning around.
“Are you free tomorrow night?” you asked, holding the VHS’ close to your chest. Steve tilted his head slightly as he looked at you. “I’m only asking because my parents are out tomorrow night and I’m stuck babysitting my little brother and I dunno, maybe you’d wanna come watch this with me or something?” you asked, pushing a piece of hair behind your hair. You thought you sounded a little stupid now that you had asked. “Actually no, forget it. I’m sure you have cooler things to do.” you rambled and before you gave him a chance to answer, you turned on your heel and headed out of the video store, letting the door swing closed behind you.

You stood there watching the popcorn start to cook on the stove top. Your little brother was sitting at the breakfast bar, a cup of water in his hand, watching you make the popcorn. A few minutes later, it was all done.
“Alright Chris, let’s go watch this-” you started to say but the sound of the doorbell going off stopped you mid-sentence. You raised an eyebrow as you looked at Chris, who was looking in the direction of the door. “Stay here.” you said, letting out a small sigh. You took the pan off the stove and turned it off before leaving the kitchen.
The doorbell rang again.
“I’m coming!” you called out, hoping they heard you. Wrapping your hand around the door handle, you opened the door and your mouth fell open as you took in who was standing there.
“I hope you don’t mind. I got your address from Robin.” Steve said, leaning against the door frame. You were still a little stunned to speak. You felt someone pull on your shirt and you turned around and saw Chris standing behind you.
“Sorry, I’m just a little surprised that you’re here.” you said before turning to your brother. “Go get some popcorn and you can use the TV in mum and dad’s bedroom.” you said, turning to your brother. A large smile appeared on your brothers face as he bounded down the hallway once more.
“Well, you did invite me.” Steve said, giving you his charming smile.
“Well, I guess you’re not wrong.” you said, more to yourself than anyone else. “Come in, was just making popcorn.” you said as you stepped aside. Steve nodded and walked inside and you closed the door behind him.
“Nice place.” Steve said as you led him into the kitchen. You walked over to the cupboards and grabbed another packet of popcorn. “How long have you been living in Hawkins for?” Steve asked, taking a seat at the breakfast bar.
“A few years. I’m only a year behind you.” you explained as you poured the kernels into the pan. “Dad got transferred here for his job in 81 and we’ve been stuck here ever since.” you explained, placing the pan onto the stove once more.
“Oh, come on, Hawkins isn’t that bad.” Steve said as he grabbed a random piece of paper from the bench and started to fold it up.
“I mean it’s not too bad but you have to admit, there’s been some weird stuffing happening in the last few months.” you explained, as you tore his eyes away from his hands and back to the popcorn which had started to pop. Steve let out a small chuckle and you were sure it was a nervous sounding laugh. “Anyway, senior year and then I’m out of here.” you explained as the popcorn finished popping. You grabbed a large bowl and poured the popcorn into the bowl.
“What are you planning on doing after?” Steve asked as he got off the seat he was sitting on and followed you down some stairs and into the basement. You knew Chris would be OK upstairs. He was a pretty good kid and behaved well when you babysat him.
“Move to New York. I want to be a journalist.” you explained, opening the basement door. Steve followed you in and looked around in awe. It was a pretty nice basement with a nice theatre set up. Steve was rather impressed.
“You know my friend Nancy got onto the school paper. I could talk to her if you want and see if she’s got room for one more.” Steve said as he sat down on the couch without waiting for an invitation. You started turning everything on and placed the video into the video player.
“Thanks, but I’ve actually got a meeting with her the first day back to see if she’ll let me on the paper.” you explained as you sat down on the couch next to him.
You hadn’t really looked where you sat and realized that you were sitting rather close to him, your leg was touching his. You moved over slightly so there was a small gap between the two of you. Steve rested his arm on the back of the couch, leaning back into it.
“Also, no one can know you’re here. My parents don’t like me having boys' round.” you explained as the first preview on the video started to play. Steve couldn’t help but look at you at this comment, raising an eyebrow.
“How many boys do you sneak into the house when your parents aren’t around?” Steve couldn’t help but ask as he grabbed some popcorn and shoved them into his mouth. Your eyes widened as you only just realized how that must have sounded.
“Oh I didn’t mean it like that. You’re actually the first boy I’ve invited around since moving here.” you explained, your cheeks going slightly red at this confession. Steve couldn’t help but smile at the thought that he made you blush.
“It’s OK, I won’t tell anyone but uh- what about your brother?” Steve asked and you let out a small laugh.
“It’s OK. He’s always got my back.” you explained as you sat back on the couch. You leaned slightly into Steve and you felt his hand rest on your shoulder. You could feel your heart race but you tried to ignore it.
“Oh, hang on.” Steve said, removing his hand. He made to get up and you moved forward slightly as he got up. He walked over the light switch and turned it off. The room went dark with only the TV lighting it up. “It’s a better experience in the dark.” Steve explained as he sat back down next to you. You made to lean into him again and once more he wrapped his arm around your shoulders, resting his hand on your shoulder.
You couldn’t believe this was really happening. Steve had been pretty popular when he was in school. He was only a year older than you but you had always known who he was. All the girls drooled over him and at first, you didn’t care for him but something had changed last year during summer break.
You had lost count with how many times you had taken Chris to the ice cream parlor. During your visits, you had become pretty good friends with Robin, never really speaking to Steve but admiring him from a distance.
As the movie started, your breathing became a little more steady. You felt relaxed around him. Part of you just wanted to reach up and kiss him but you knew better. You wanted to also watch the movie. You couldn’t help but rest your head on his shoulder and you were surprised that he didn’t move.
Your eyes started to slowly close, a small yawn escaping your lips. You felt fingers under your chin, your face suddenly lifting up to look into Steves face.
“Hey, don’t fall asleep on me now.” he whispered before lowering his face slightly so that his lips gently brushed against yours. You reached up so that your lips were fulling on his and you found yourself kissing him.
Steve grabbed your legs and moved them so they were resting on top of his. You turned your body around so that you were now facing him. You realized what was happening and suddenly pulled away.
“Sorry. Just a bit too fast.” you explained, once again, going a little red but Steve just nodded his head.
“It’s Ok. I honestly didn’t think that would happen.” he commented, reaching up and brushing a piece of hair from your face. He kissed you once more before you turned once more to watch the movie. Your heart was still pounding from what had happened.
You just hoped that by stopping it, it wouldn’t scare him off.
