Mira walked into her dark home letting out another tired growl. She flicked her ears, bits of plaster and dust falling off them. She was supposed to have an easy mission, but Jesse wanted to take the direct route. She stretched, her limbs cracking with each one. Her tail twitched, adding to the pile of dust around her. She wanted to just curl up with Kaya.
The bunny was probably hidden in the walls already. They had said they don’t like sleeping out in the open when she was away. She stalked through the darkness hoping at least not to disturb them. That task was fairly easy, being part cat helped a lot. Each step she hoped to see a light on somewhere signaling that Kaya was still awake. She had traveled through most of the house finding nothing, but darkness. She sighed and slipped into her bathroom, grimacing when she met her own eyes.
She had bits of blood painting her face. Jesse hadn’t been calm when the fighting started. They even threw someone through a wall… and straight into Mira. She laughed about it after, claiming Mira should have been able to dodge it. Another low growl escaped her as she pictured the smile on his face. Jesse was impossible to predict. She pushed the events out of her mind and slipped out of her tight clothing. She showered quickly to clean off the aftermath of the night. She slipped into the loose fitting clothes she always kept ready after a job.
She slipped out of the room and listened for signs her little bunny had woken up. There was nothing but silence. As much as she wanted to hold them close after everything, they should be able to rest without her hunting them down. She padded down the hall to her bedroom. She squinted as she walked in, a light catching her off guard.
Mira’s heart melted when she found the source. Kaya had fallen asleep using her phone to watch videos. They had curled up on her pillow and hugged the sweater she’d left out before the mission. She went around to the other side of the bed and tried not to disturb them. They let out a small groan pulling more of the sweater around them. Mira laughed a bit which made their small brown eyes snap open and start searching.
“Kaya it’s just me,” she whispered. They stared up at her and started to climb to their feet. Mira slipped her hands around them and brought them close. “ You waited up for me? ”
“I was worried. You said it would be quick, but it got late… I was hoping I’d be awake when you finally got home,” they said. She pulled them closer and started to purr. They were amazing. She pressed her nose into Kaya’s chest eliciting a laugh.
“Jesse went a bit crazy again. She threw someone through a wall and into me,” Kaya gasped so Mira nuzzled them more. “I was fine, don't worry. Just got covered in plaster and wound up needing to clean up his mess.”
“When am I going to meet Jesse?” Mira stiffened, the bear she called a partner was the last person she wanted near Kaya. A rabbit in this world could be hurt so easily and Jesse wasn’t exactly gentle.
“We can talk about that tomorrow, let’s both get some sleep.”
Kaya nodded against her and tried to squirm out of her grasp. She chuckled, moving them up to her ears. They crawled along the pillow to the spot where her ear met the surface. She managed to twist it enough for Kaya to slip under. They loved using her fur to stay warm at night. She started to purr louder as small hands ran over her ear.
“Mira, you still have plaster in your fur,” they whispered. She made a strangled mewl when they tugged at it. “I guess I can help you get it out in the morning.”
“Love you Kaya,” she slurred. The petting and fatigue was finally pulling her consciousness down.
“Love you too kitty cat.”
