Chapter Text
Those ghostly howls.
They didn't sound the same.
It wasn't the haunting wind, screaming for God knows what, as I'd initially thought. It was something else. Something sombre, more desperate.
How stupid I was.
I should've realised the difference in tone. I definitely would've heard the difference if I'd paid more attention to those survival studies my mother used to drone on about.
The inviting warmth of the fire's dance had been pure bliss, especially given the relentless onslaught of snow. I'm still surprised the flames hadn't died out in that storm.
Guess what did die in that storm.
It wasn't until I'd heard the crunching snow around me that I'd realised what exactly those howls had belonged to. It'd occurred to me that, by lighting a fire, I'd essentially stuck a beacon to my fur-lined jacket.
So I fled.
Well, 'had tried to flee' would be more accurate.
How stupid I was.
While unceremoniously losing my footing on numerous occasions in the icy terrain, my breath like shards of glass in my lungs, my mother's tirades and lectures had played like an endless torrent of water sloshing around in my head.
"This could mean life or death, Amora. This could save your life."
"And why on earth would you wear dark clothing in the snow? Are you asking to be killed?"
"No fires! You'll attract attention."
"Why did you bring meat? Predators will be here by nightfall!"
"Don't run! If you run, you look like prey. Don't turn your back, either."
The last one had caught my attention. "Don't run"? "Don't turn your back"?
By the time I'd understood what she'd meant, it had been too late. They'd already seen me as prey.
How stupid I was.
I'd whirled around to face those bloody beasts, only to be met with their gleaming fangs sinking into my throat.
Clearly, I would've been dead soon anyway.
Despite the pain searing through me at the time, I couldn't help but admire the creatures. With their pale fur and icy eyes, there's no wonder why I didn't see them coming.
Still. It would've been helpful if I'd known what I was doing.
How stupid I was.
If only I'd paid more attention that night.
Maybe I wouldn't have wound up dead.
Notes:
Really happy with how this turned out, so I decided to post it ^^

Chapter Text
Ēna ngawē whakahaehae.
Kāore i rite rātou oro.
Kāore i te hau auē, e karanga ana kei te mōhio te Atua he aha, pērā i tāku whakaaro i te tuatahi. Te reira mea kē atu. He mea pōuri ake, he whakapāhi ake.
He pēhea tāku pōauau i mua.
Matapae ko wai i mate i taua paroro.
Tae noa ki tāku rongonga i te tukituki o te hukarere huri noa i ahau, kātahi ahau ka mōhio he aha te take o aua ngawē. I roa ka mōhio ahau, nā te tahu ahi, kua piri ahau he ramaroa ki tāku koti huruhuru.
Nā ka oma ahau.
Ana, 'kua ngana ki te oma’ he tika ake.
He pēhea tāku pōauau i mua.
I au e taka tonu ana i runga i te whenua hukapapa, ko tāku manawa rite he kongakonga karaihe i roto i āku pūkahukahu, ko ngā akoranga me ngā kauhau a tōku whaea i purei rite he awa o wai e rere ana i roto i tāku māhunga.
"Tēnei pea e ora, he mate rānei, e Amora. Tēnei e pea ora tō oranga."
"He aha koe i te whenua ka mau kākahu pōuri i te hukarere? E tono ana koe kia patu?"
"Kāore ngā ahi! Ka kukume koe i te aro."
"He aha koe i mau mai ai i te mīti? Ka tae mai ngā konihi hei te pō!"
"Kaua e oma! Ki te oma koe, he titiro rite koe ki te pārurenga. Kaua hoki e huri tō tuarā."
Ko te kotahi whakamutunga i mau tāku aro. "Kaua e oma"? "Kaua e huri tō tuarā"?
I te wā i mōhio ai ahau ki tāna tikanga, kua tōmuri rawa. Kua kite kē rātou i ahau he pārurenga.
He pēhea tāku pōauau i mua.
I tahuri ahau ki te anga atu ki aua kararehe toto, i mua tonu i te totohu o rātou niho kanapa ki tāku korokoro.
E mārama ana, kua mate tonu ahau.
Ahakoa te mamae i roto i ahau i tērā wā, kāre au i kaha ki te whakamihi i ngā kararehe. Me o rātou huruhuru kōmā me o rātou kanohi hukapapa, kāre he mīharo he aha ahau i kore ai kite i a rātou e haere mai ana.
Tonu. Kua pai mēnā kua mōhio ahau ki tāku mahi ana.
He pēhea tāku pōauau i mua.
Mehemea anake au i aro atu i tērā pō.
Kua tēnā pea e kore e whai au i mate.
Notes:
This was also for my Māori assessment ^^
Honestly pretty impressed with how the translation came out
