Work Text:
The first time they had met, he had come in with a twisted ankle. It was Law’s first week working as a student assistant in the office; the first thing he noticed was that the ravenette student had passed out. Originally had assumed he had because of the shock until a snore came from the boy. Law ushered the other students out and made an attempt to gently wake the student. Whose face scrunched presumably adjusting to the lighting of the room, he gripped the hem of Laws scrubs and rubbed his face. Law simply stared, dumbfounded by this kid's boldness. Big brown eyes stared up at him, his face flushed at the sight, he immediately pulled his shirt away and walked to the desk with a sigh, he needed to log this away. Laws face went back to its resting position as he looked to the athlete,
“Name?”
“Ace Portgas! You must be new, I've never seen you in here before!”
Law nodded, logging the kid away while also noticing the previous logs, he sure was in here a lot. He looked over from his computer to find Ace staring off into space, he got up to get some ice for him. While handing it over he spoke,
“This will help with swelling apply carefully to your ankle,” Law instructed, “Now tell me, Portgas-ya, what happened?”
Ace took the ice and did as he was instructed, he held a beaming smile to him, “So! We were practicing for this weekend's game and my team for practice scored a goal and we were really happy! I got super excited, way too quickly for my body to handle and totally passed out, good thing Marco was there to bring me here. Y’know he’s-”
Law put a hand up to stop the boys rambling, man he could talk someone's ear if they let him. He informed Ace that he could rest here until someone could come pick him up.
Later that day Law had the fortune of meeting Ace’s slightly younger brother, Sabo. He was very understanding with the situation,
“Make sure he doesn’t walk on it, as long as he doesn’t it should be healed for his soccer game this weekend”
“Youve got it, thank you, Nurse” Sabo smiled calmly
“Oh, and Portgas-ya?” Ace looked to Law from the doorway, “Good luck this weekend”
Ace beamed on his way out
--------------------
The next time Law got the chance to see Ace was when he came in looking embarrassed and a hand over his forehead, Law arched a brow. When Ace finally decided to reveal the hidden injury on his forehead it showed to be a newly bruising goose egg. Law sighed and went to go log it into the computer before getting once again ice for him.
“Use this to reduce the swelling, and it should be gone, eventually. What happened this time, Portgas-ya?”
“Dont say that like it’s a bad thing!” Ace laughed while holding ice to his bruise, “I was in class paying attention, and I got super bored about what the teacher was going over. Something about numbers and stuff- anyways while they were talking I got all sleepy and just boom! Slammed my head into the desk for a nap, I came hear after I woke up”
Law had almost forgotten how much this kid could talk, he nodded in response at the end of the students story
“Well, youre free to head back to class. Try to be more careful before you fall asleep next time”
Ace leaped out the door, waving a wide arm excitingly quickly. Law gave a small wave back, what a strange kid, he thought despite not being that much older than him.
--------------------
As time passed the locker to see Ace quite a lot, he saw him about once or twice a week with small injuries caused by, as Law discovered, his severe case of narcolepsy. Which was pretty entertaining whenever it didn't cause Ace harm. Once Ace had passed out mid conversation and when he awoke continued as if nothing happened which got a laugh out of Law. He hadn't yet noticed that whenever he laughed Ace would stare as if he were mesmerized but always looked away before Law would notice.
The onyx haired man had also learned he hated, HATED, seeing Ace in any sort of pain. It felt as though his heart would tear at any discomfort he showed.
There was one thing Law could never forget, that was how much Ace simply talked. He was an incredible chatterbox; Law would let him go on and on, mostly about his brothers. Luffy and Sabo were their names, Ace was the oldest of the three at 18, Sabo was next at 17 turning 18 just the next month, finally Luffy was 15, a freshman. Sabo seemed to be the motherly type for them, always picking Ace up and Luffy as well, the occasions he was there. Though a lot, he saw green haired man pick Luffy up instead and was always at his soccer games Law just absolutely loved going to (lies). He was only at them as a standby paramedic though seeing Ace all giddy to see him there made it a little bit more bearable.
No Law didn't have a soft spot for him.
Not at all.
--------------------
Ace hadn't come into the nurse's office in a week.
A week turned into two, two turned into three and three turned into a month
Law was worried terribly worried; He knows he shouldn't be, the fact he hasn't should be a good thing, but he couldn't help it. the loud obnoxious annoying dumbass had grown on him. He missed seeing him so much. Law hadn't realized until now, now that the boy wasn’t constantly around around him, he’d fallen for that complete airhead.
--------------------
About a month and a half, Ace had finally arrived in the nurses office. Yet there was no Law. There was days like this all the time, where Law would have a collage class and wasn’t able to be in the office. As usual the regular nurse, Hiriluk, was there. He was a odd old man but incredibly talented nonetheless.
“Good afternoon, M’ boy!” The elder greeted, “I see you’ve got no new bruises today, what brings you instead?”
Ace swallowed, “I was hoping you could give something to Law for me?”
“Of course, me boy! Hand it over, I’ll give it to ‘im when he comes in”
Ace handed over a small envelope that was a gentle peach tone and was sealed ever so carefully with a red heart sticker. Hiriluk smiled, Ah young love, he was more than happy to deliver the letter. As Ace was on his way out to leave, the door slid open to reveal a tired Law. Ace immediately rushed out the door, beet red.
Law knew it. He was avoiding him! Law wanted to chase after to figure out what the hell he had done wrong. The thing that stopped him was a whistle from his superior, who waved the peach envelope at him. Law quickly nabbed it from the old coot, he sat at his desk and stared at it.
“Are you gonna open the thing or not? The boy was so nervous to hand the thing to me” Hiriluk hounded
Law nodded, delicatly he opened it as if it were to fall apart if he opened it with anymore haste. It read:
Dear Law:
To start, Im sorry for avoiding you. Anytime I was near you my heart would race and it would literally cause me to pass out. Though during my time away you never left my mind, I love it when you smile; the way you laugh, even your really oddly cold hands. Trafalgar Law, I am deeply and truly in love with you. I have my final soccer game of the season this upcoming Friday evening, if you accept, please come.
- Ace Portgas
Law sighed. This was by far the dorkiest thing he’d ever received and yet it was stupidly romantic. Law held it against his chest, now sighing deeply, he would show up to that final game if it were the last thing he did on this planet.
--------------------
Ace was focused on the game, if Law were there he needed to play his best. It wasn’t until halftime did he see Law in the stands, he beamed. He had never felt so happy at one time, Law was there, cheering him on quietly.
They won he game with Aces signature bicycle kick shot dubbed “Faiakikku” because it seemed to go so fast the ball looked like it were on fire. He was blessed with the nickname “Fire kick Ace” because of the move. As the team lifted Ace up while he help up their trophy proudly with a grin from ear to ear, he saw Laws beautiful smile from the stands.
Once he was on the ground, he looked around a bit disoriented, Ace was able to make out Law making his way onto the field and bolted to him. The onyx head met him halfway, but instead of words of congrats gave him a passionate kiss that showed Ace how much he loved him back.
Why a kiss? Because Law too was deeply and truly in love with Ace and wouldn’t have it any other way.
