The Science of Illusion || James Moriarty x Reader Fanfic

Summary:

"Be careful when you mingle around the devil, because at the end of the day, you may end up being like him."

You know you could do it, fool the only Consulting Criminal in the world. Your foster-brother asked for your help and you whole-heartedly accepted this suicide mission - serve as a double-spy for the England government to follow James Moriarty.

You succeeded in your mission, you were the ONLY one who had fooled the late Napoleon of Crime. You actually did more than that, but it seems like you didn't have to worry because the whole problem is eliminated now...or so you thought.

'Did you miss me?! Did you miss me?!' The video of him spoke to you, you know it's meant for you...and surely, he's going for you and he's making war.

And now, he's not the only one...a more threatening person wants to play with you. She sees you as a 'thief' and nothing but a 'replacement'. And truth be told?
.
.
She wants you DEAD more than the man you just fooled.

Chapter 1: Sister-Mine

Chapter Text

*John's P.O.V.*

Sherlock and I haven't been sleeping properly for days, maybe weeks? Actually, I've lost count. We've been stressed and pressured with all this fuss about Moriarty coming back alive from the dead and we don't still know if he's really alive or if someone is just playing with the whole of England.

But I guess, it's really not possible for him to be back. Sherlock managed to fool everyone with his fake death too, that would mean Moriarty can do the same even if Sherlock saw him blow his brains out with his two eyes. Maybe this is why Sherlock is doing nothing but to track Moriarty down, maybe he's itching to know how the consulting criminal has done that trick. Moriarty isn't really doing anything major at the moment except for that video he sent out to the whole of England and letting us know that he's alive, but we just know that soon enough, his games will begin again.

"Sherlock, aren't you hungry? You haven't eaten anything for days, " I asked Sherlock who's busy looking for something in the newspapers in front of him. As a doctor and his partner, I'm worried about his well-being. The guy hasn't had anything for days, the only thing that keeps him going is his patches which I'm still not happy with.

"Eating is a waste of time, John." He answered me and I honestly expected that answer.

"Fine. Starve yourself to death. Maybe that'll be the reason of your death, Moriarty doesn't even need to do anything, you're just the one killing yourself," I told him angrily.

"Oh please, John. I can handle myself, doctor. Look at me, I'm fine, I have the energy, I have my mind focused, and I'm alert. I don't need to waste my precious time for --

Sherlock's childish reasoning was cut off because there was a knock on the door. He stopped talking and just went back to the newspapers, not even caring who's at the door at all. I silently sighed while looking down at my watch, it's quite late for a client now.

"We're busy, tell her we don't accept cases," Sherlock said, his eyes are still glued on the newspapers.

"We don't even know if she's a she or he's a he, " I said and I think I forgot that this is Sherlock Holmes.

"She's a she, her footsteps aren't heavy, the way she knocks wasn't that loud and I do think it's not an urgent need. There's no sign of urgency on it," He explained.

"Well, if I think it is urgent, we'll still take it, " I told him, and he just replied with a grunt.

I walked towards the door and opened it slightly and I saw a girl outside. I was actually expecting it to be a middle aged woman, but this girl is maybe around 25 years old. She looked so calm and bright and she was innocently smiling at me.

"Hi. What can I do for you?" I asked with a smile.

"Doctor Watson! I love your blogs and I love the way you portray Sherlock in them. He sounds so interesting, " she said with a chuckle. She just speaks calmly, and I realized that she has an american accent.

I smiled at her; I think she's just a fan of some sort. I was about to go outside so she won't be able to see Sherlock inside for I am sure he doesn't want to be disturbed by a fan, but before I do so, I felt Sherlock open the door completely. I gazed at him, and he looked at the girl with confusion and full of question on his face.

"What the bloody hell are you doing here?" He asked with full shock.

"You know her, Sherlock?" I asked curiously. I looked at the girl again who smiled at Sherlock with excitement yet there was pride in her eyes. Can it be that this girl is an ex-lover?... but no, she's way too young and I do think that a girl like her won't pass Sherlock's high standards. For Sherlock, she's probably normal and boring. But to what Sherlock's expression, he knows this girl.

"Well, glad to see you too, brother-mine," she said with a smirk. She tiptoed and reached for a kiss on Sherlock's cheeks. Sherlock remained firm and just looked at the girl.

Wait, what?! Brother-mine?!

"I'm asking you again, what the bloody hell are you do--

"She's your sister?! You have a sister?!" I asked Sherlock in shock, and he just brushed me off by going inside the flat.

I was just lost for words at that moment because I was shocked. Sherlock didn't say no to my answer, so it would mean this girl is really a sister of his.

"Can I come in, John? I'll explain everything for him if you like, " she said calmly and all I did was nod.

"It's not an important fact, John. Why would I --

"I don't care if its important to you or not. I've known you for years, Sherlock! I've met all of your family, or so I thought, you could have given me just a little hint," I told him as I let the girl inside. I closed the door a little too hard and faced them again. I couldn't believe that I still don't know him that much after all this time.

The girl sat on Sherlock's chair while looking around the place. Sherlock was still looking at her in confusion and maybe...worry?

"Don't be mad, John. It's only understandable. He and Mycroft would erase my existence if they can." She said which shocked me.

"Pardon?" I asked.

"Ah. No. No. I'm sorry that wasn't a bad thing, I think. They would just like to erase my existence to protect me...somehow...that's their way of caring," She told me and I somehow understood what she meant by that. The Holmes brothers would literally do such a thing to show care.

"We don't care for you, y/n. It was just a mistake that we --

"Sherlock, that's rude!" I cut him off, it still amazes me how he can manage to say these things.

"Oh look who's talking. Aren't you the one who chose me at the orphanage, Sherlock? Saying that I'm interesting, saying I'm not normal?" She mocked him.

"Orphanage?" I asked and she nod.

"Yep. They adopted me when I was 5 years old. So I'm not related to them biologically, only legally. So I think I'm still a bit normal compared to my two brothers, " She explained.

"Mycroft didn't even tell me." I said, still shocked with all of these information.

"Again, they were somehow erasing my existence. They felt guilty that I became related to a high functioning sociopath and the somehow queen of England." She explained casually.

"That was still rude for them to do! They hid you away?" I asked.

I looked at Sherlock and he's back again with the newspapers, not even welcoming his sister that I assume he hasn't seen for years.

I just sighed and realized being angry wouldn't really do much. This is just it; Sherlock has a sister and I just found out and Sherlock thinks it wasn't a big deal. By now, I should really be used to this. Awkward silence emerged inside the room and somehow, I feel like the tension was rising, maybe I need to leave the both of them for a while.

"Uh...would you like some tea or something? I was about to go out and buy food," I asked, just trying to get out of the scene for a while to leave them both.

"Coffee will be fine, John. Thank you very much, " she said with a smile and I nodded.

"I'll go out for a bit, Sherlock would you please welcome your sister. I'll be back in no time," I said as I go outside the flat.

My head was still circling around the thought that Sherlock has a younger sister. A part of me was happy that they are not blood-related, meaning that girl is somehow...normal. But then again Sherlock chose her for some reason, and I feel that something is special with that girl. I just hope she's not a sociopath too.

*Y/N's P.O.V.*

Finally, after all what I've been through, I'll be able to get to Sherlock again.

I honestly missed him, he's closer to me than Mycroft and I like the way he cares for me. It's like he's always giving me the cold shoulder and the silent treatment, but behind that there's something more. Besides, he was the one who chose me at that orphanage. I was curious at first, but now I definitely know why.

I've been following his and John's journey through the doctor's blog. I actually enjoy it and I sometimes want to be with them in their adventure, but as Sherlock and Mycroft say...I should just hide. People will definitely use me against them and I don't want that to happen too.

But really, all those came crashing down when Mycroft asked me for a favor. And now I'm running back to Sherlock for help.

John just went out to get us some drinks and I was left with dead silence in the apartment. I looked around and I'm already comfortable with the place, back in the day, I'm always in Sherlock's room and it's always been like this. Books, papers, evidences, and that skull of his is still around here.

"You really got better on putting that mask on, y/n. I didn't even see through you," I was pulled out of my thoughts and found Sherlock in front of me. I smiled as I stood up. "To be honest,I'm glad to see you again, sister-mine" he said and I really find that sweet.

"That's more like it, Sherly." I said with a giggle.

"I still don't like that name, y/n." He said. "How are you?"

"I'm fine, brother, " I lied and Sherlock just nodded. I can't believe I'm still so good at this that even Sherlock doesn't see through me.

"Say what you want, y/n. I may not be able to tell what you are thinking, but you're here because something happened, " Sherlock said.

"You still know me well. But it's not the right time to tell you what it is. We have to be with Mycroft when I do so, so you'll kill him instead of me." I said with a sociopathic smile and he curiously looked at me.

"Now, what did the both of you did this time?" He asked seriously and I looked at him in the same way too, but this time with fear in my eyes.

"Something fucked up, Sherlock. And we messed up...big time." I told him and saw his jaw tightened.

He knew that shit just got real with that.
