Work Text:
Soft music plays in the background as Vibri kicks her legs. There was really nothing to do, just sit around on a line and wait for one of her friends to arrive. Maybe they would want to play with her like they did years ago! Maybe they would sing along with her while she avoids the cubes and stands over the pitfalls! Or maybe they had just forgotten.
Parappa would still visit her on occasion, telling her of how he became popular! Being friends since they were both little, she felt happy for the dog (not jealous at all, she was most definitely not jealous of being forgotten!).
Speak of the devil and he arrives, Parappa hopped from behind the button labeled 'High Score'. The bunny was ecstatic! This was the first time someone visited in what, four years? She'd seen people walk by the PS1 where she resided, some reselling her many copies of discs.
"Hello, Parappa!" Vibri smiled, speaking in her high pitched voice.
"Hello, Vibri! How's it been?" He jumped over to her, carefully making his way over the white line. Despite how much he visited, he was more used to the graphics of his world.
"It's been so boring without you! Nobody visits me anymore, and when they do they just talk about how much I'm worth." She reached out her thin arms reaching for a hug from the other.
"It's been so boring without me? Ah, I get that. I got new debuts for games since NanaOn-Sha really loves me. But people really love you too! I thought they were playing with you?" She shook her head.
"Nope, must've been some kind of copy made for computers."
"A copy for computers, yeah that would make sense. Oh shit! Look at the time! I have to go for my next show! See you later, Vibri!"
--
Years past as nobody visited, this time nobody would even walk by! She sighed, taking a look at the white line that stretched to infinity. Maybe she could play with herself, for old times sake. She pressed the tutorial song, titled Vib Ribbon Blues. Well, that was awfully accurate to what she felt.
She strolled to the cheerful beat, humming the lyrics to herself.
"La la la la~! Oh what fun!"
A block gets nearer and nearer, and she just barely jumps in front of it.
"Oops! That was close! Vib Ribbon is a game where you press the buttons to match the sound generated shapes!"
Not paying attention and simply humming the lyrics, she smacks her head straight into a rectangle. With a hiss, her body becomes a mess of lines.
"This is what happens when you make a mistake.."
Involuntarily, she gasps as her form shifts into a frog, a snake, then back to her regular bunny self.
"No problem, you can do it! Vib Ribbon only uses four buttons!"
She points up to the sky, expecting a visual of the controller to show up. It doesn't.
"It's really simple! Look, there's obstacles coming this way!"
She continues to jump over the blocks, stand up above pits, round loops, and roll through waves; never growing tired. Combined obstacles come in front of her, but she ends up crossing those with ease.
"Phew, I'm shattered!" Vibri laughs, sitting down onto the white line. Crossing the course was fun, but it was not the same without a friend to cheer you on. Without a friend to guide you. Without a friend to appreciate you. Without a friend to make you feel whole. Without a friend to stop you from being reckless.
The bunny stared down into the never-ending abyss below her, entirely pitch black. She had never fallen off this line, so what would happen if she did? People would stop her before she crashed into a block too many times or tried to fall on purpose, but who was here to stop her now? Nobody. Nobody was here to stop her this time.
Taking a deep breath to prepare herself for nothingness, she jumps off the line. The world above her grows smaller and smaller as she falls deeper, eventually disappearing from her eyesight. It was hard to tell if she was even falling anymore, as her vision was coated with nothing but black. Were her eyes open or were they closed? She couldn't tell.
It remained this way for the longest time until she saw a familiar white line below her, growing in size the more she fell. After about 10 minutes, she landed on the line, limbs wobbly from floating. As expected, nobody was even there to greet her.
All alone and unable to find a release, Vibri let out a sigh. She had more years to live until all her discs were destroyed.
