Chapter 1: burst of courage (kazumiya)

Chapter Text

Ever since Yoimiya realized she liked Kazuha, she got to work making a firework just for him. She didn’t tell him, of course, because she figured he’d think it was weird that she was making one for him when he hadn’t even ordered any. When she finished, she kept the slip for the firework with her, hoping for the day she could give it to him and maybe tell him how she feels.

It was the night of a festival when she found her chance.

The air was humid and heavy, the stereotypical summer night. Yoimiya couldn’t help but feel as though she was swimming, and by the way her heart was beating so fast, she wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case and she just hadn’t noticed. She found him on a hill, sprawled out on the grass with his gaze fixed to the stars in anticipation of the fireworks show that would soon begin. Yoimiya clutched the slip in her grasp, trying so hard to not alert him in case she decided to change her mind and run away.

But he was too perceptive, turning his head to the side and giving her that gentle smile that always gave her butterflies. “Naganohara-san, I thought I felt a familiar presence.”

Defeated, she walked up and sat down beside him, pretending to be calm despite the fact that she swore her insides were twisting in a knot. “H-hello,” she said with a laugh, and she cringed bc what was that?!

He didn’t seem to mind, and he only turned back to look at the sky, his scarlet gaze nearly glowing in the dim light.

“Um, Kaedehara-san—“ Yoimiya started, but her words got cut off by a sudden boom. All at once, the sky was slight over Inazuma, bursts of colors sparking the clouds in a gorgeous flair. She was hypnotized, a smile finding its way upon her lips at the sight of her hard work dancing before the people of her nation.

From beside her, she heard a soft voice. “Is there something you wish to tell me, Naganohara-san?”

Goosebumps shot up her skin. She turned to look at him with wide eyes, her heart stuttering at the sight of Kazuha, his face flashing with the colors above them. Without thinking, she shoved the slip into his hand, jumping to her feet. “T-that’s for you!” Without hearing his response, she darted away, her pulse nearly drowning out the fireworks.

Kazuha, surprised and a little amused, read over the slip. When he looked up to the sky, a firework bloomed right before his eyes, reds and blues in the shape of fluttering leaves.

He kept that slip with him, untouched save for the creases it had when Yoimiya had given it to him.
