Why Enkidu Keeps Their Hair Long

Summary:

Afternoon talks in Uruk

Notes:

First fic that I am ever posting, bear with me on this one because this was still months ago.
Based off of a headcanon where Enkidu had short hair, back when they first fought Gilgamesh. Considering how their character card when you haven’t ascended them yet, shows that they have short hair.

Work Text:

It was yet again another sunny afternoon in Uruk. The market was as busy as always, filled with the chatter of vendors and customers alike. Things had begun to look different for their beloved king, ever since their fight with Enkidu who’s now been recognized as his companion.

Looking out the balcony of the ziggurat, Enkidu stands, looking down at the hustle and bustle of the city below them. It has been quite some time since Gilgamesh invited them to stay with him in the ziggurat, ever since they went to confront the king. They’re still getting used to living with the lavish lifestyle that Gilgamesh has, but it means nothing more than to be with their friend.

A sudden figure approaches them, which they immediately recognized who it was without question.
They smiled, turning to the figure. “Did you wish to discuss something with me, my king?” They said in a bit of a teasing manner. Gilgamesh brushed it off approaching them with a grin. “Anytime is a good time to spend with my most dearest companion.” He said in his usual arrogant way of speech, making Enkidu chuckle in the process.

Gilgamesh approached his dear friend closing the gap between them, his body pressed against Enkidu’s back. Enkidu looked at him with that same smile full of fondness which he deeply adored, returning with that same look he’d always give them, only reserved for them. He rested his chin onto the other’s shoulder. Stealing some glances as his significant other looks at the city. “Enjoying the view?” He asked, to which the other softly chuckled. “Much better now that you’re here.”

Gilgamesh shifted now beside Enkidu, pulling away the stray hair that’s blocking their face, only to run his fingers through the soft green locks. “Your hair grew quite a lot ever since our first meeting.” He said, as Enkidu melted into the touch. “Does it bother you?” Enkidu asked, making Gilgamesh disagree right away. “No, no. It’s beautiful.” He said tucking a strand of hair behind their ear. Making Enkidu smile. “My hair was actually like this when I finally took on this form.” They said now looking at the man. “Oh, do tell.”

The day finally came that Enkidu had to face the King of Uruk, that being the reason why they were created by the gods in the first place. But such long hair in battle would be difficult as they took on Shamhat’s appearance. Requesting for their hair to be cut, Enkidu walked out of the forest, ready to face their rival.

“You shouldn’t have.” Gilgamesh said, running his fingers through Enkidu’s hair again. “Then I won’t.” Enkidu eagerly said. “Besides, it’s not really a huge bother for me, and if that is what pleases my king.”

Gilgamesh cupped their face, caressing their cheek softly. “You’ve already pleased me more than enough times Enkidu. You are worth more than anything in my treasury, worth more than anything else in the world.” Enkidu cupped his hand that was on his cheek and nuzzled on it, as Gilgamesh pressed a soft kiss on their forehead. “I love you.” He said, pulling them into an embrace. Instead of saying it out loud, Enkidu reciprocated the embrace, by hugging him tighter as they buried their face onto the crook of his neck, as the sun started to set.
