Work Text:

What are the makings of a monster?

You need it to be frightening.

You need someone to be frightened.

So you take the orphaned outsider and teach him how to fight.

You indulge his impassiveness in battle,

toss it wary glances in the aftermath.

You unleash him onto the battlefield

and turn away from the bloodshed that makes way for your Peace.

(Best to put a beast to use if you'll spare it the chains.)

You leave him alone; let the wickedness fester, let the empathy dull, let it forget he belonged (let it know it never will). And then, you wait.

(Help him get acquainted with his new nature; have a list of ends to reach by any means and give them out as orders (while it still listens). Make use of what it has for as long as you can. Feed him blood and leave it thirsty. Squeeze until the last drop (or getting found out). Point a finger at the sin and ask him to repent (only once it's too late). Let it be the monster so you don't have to be.)

The snake will shed its skin and reveal what you'd been nurturing underneath. (The process will repeat itself, over and over). By the end, it is all that is left.

Pray it can grow mercy to have on you.

Swear to never do it again. Forgo the blame.
