Work Text:
A distant mountain valley hid far behind rows of tall blurry buildings you could watch pass by from a large wide window, as the train peacefully ran along its path. The quiet only disturbed by soft whooshing of the wind from open windows and soft chatter of nearby passengers.
Sasaki played with his phone as he searched for his favorite songs, headset resting against his ears. The doors opened when the train came to its stop and people poured in and out before the train started off again continuously. One of them went to join up with Sasaki.
"Yo." Hirano said, tilting his head in greeting. Strands of blond hair secured with a hairclip, pacific blue eyes calmly watched the ginger who moved his headphones down to his neck, turning to face his friend. "Hey,"
"How's it going?" Hirano inquired, putting one hand in his jean's pocket, the other holding the safety poll.
"Good, and you?"
"Same."
The tall blond flipped open his phone and started going through it. The gentle sways and bumps of the train felt relaxing as they enjoyed their peaceful trip to University. A baby happily played on his mom's lap. Others were reading books or listening to music too. Morning light painted everyone's faces with bright colors.
"Are your studies going well? Hirano looked up from his phone. It was exams period for the both of them, and Hirano knew how hard it was for the ginger to fully concentrate on his studies. "Want me to help you?"
"Yeah, that'd be nice." Sasaki's chin dipped down as he gazed at his auburn sneakers.
"What's wrong?" Hirano watched the frown on his friend with uncertainty. The floor slightly bobbed from the train's path, the scenery moving at a steady pace.
"It's just, you always help me, I feel like I don't pay you back enough." Sasaki gripped the sturdy poll a little.
Hirano sighed, relieved that it wasn't anything to worry about. "I told you don't worry about that stuff. I'm doing it because I want to." Hirano fumbled with his hair and glanced at his friend. "But if you really want to, you can help me bake valentine's chocolate..."
Sasaki quickly looked up and gazed widely at the blond who looked away in embarrassment.
"Only if you want to of course - actually never mind, forget it -"
"Okay," Sasaki quickly interrupted before his friend could spiral into a ramble. "I'd love to."
Hirano smiled back at his friend. The train slowly came to a stop, arriving at its next destination. The doors swiftly opened and Hirano waved at his friend. "Let's study at the library after class." He stepped off the train. Sasaki waved back. "Okay, see ya!" He watched his friend stroll out of the train and disappear into the crowd.
-
"Alright, take a short break and we'll continue our class." The teacher announced, placing his books on his front desk. Breaths of relief could be heard around the classroom, small chatter started as the teacher left. Late morning sun shone through the wide windows. Miyano stretched his arms up, releasing his tense muscles. Seats clattered as his friends went to sit with him.
Tashiro munched on his snack and Kuresawa texted his girlfriend. Miyano used that moment to text his boyfriend too.
[You free after school?]
[Sorry, I'm going to study with Hirano at the library after classes]
[Okay! Study hard, I'm cheering for you!]
[Thanks, you too! - Love you <3]
[Love you too <3]
Miyano slumped over his desk, barely hanging on to his phone.
"What's up?" Kuresawa watched the raven-haired stooping over.
Miyano muttered something unintelligible and folded his arms under his chin. Tashiro playfully poked at him. "You haven't seen Sasaki for almost two weeks, right?"
"Ahh, that makes sense." Kuresawa nodded in understanding. "I wouldn't be able to cope either if I didn't see my girlfriend for a week."
"It can't be helped. He has important exams coming up that will determine his future. I can't bother him right now..." Miyano placed his phone down and idly twirled a finger on his desk.
Kuresawa knows that his friend loves to put others before him, and even though that's a good trait to have, it can take a toll on his own mental health, and he worries about Miyano sometimes. "It's true that it can't be helped, but it's completely normal to want to see someone you love."
Miyano glanced up at his friend, a tiny shimmer in his sapphire eyes. Kuresawa smiled knowing he had reached his friend out from his cloudy thoughts, and patted him on the shoulder. "So don't worry about such things, okay?"
Miyano straightened up, his cheeks raised in a soft smile. "Thanks Kuresawa."
The teacher came back and class swiftly started again. Birds sitting in on a branch chirped close by, a cat's tail waved from behind the tree trunk.
-
There was a soft thud as Hirano placed his books down on the table, Sasaki seated in front of him. It was late afternoon, almost evening, the two boys had settled at one of the many desks in the library. Stickers and pamphlets sprinkled across the walls. Large, sturdy bookshelves lined the room, marching across the floor in colorful rows. It was peaceful.
Sasaki thanked his friend as he reached for one of the books and opened it at a designated page. The blond settled down and took out his own books from his sturdy bag and hooked it on his chair.
"You're taking this very seriously." Hirano's lips raised. Though he felt proud for his friend, it was still rather uncharastic of him. And Hirano couldn't help but wonder aloud.
"I want to make Miyano proud." Sasaki stated, his eyes fixed on the sentence he was reading, his pencil scribbled along the smooth paper.
Hirano brought a hand to his mouth to hide his quiet laugh. "Well, as long as you have a reason to study, I guess it's fine."
Sasaki quickly glanced back at his friend in a fake pout before returning to his studies.
"If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask." Hirano took out his own pencil.
"Yes mom."
"Stop calling me that."
-
"Wanna grab some coffee?" Sasaki pondered as they strolled out of the library, footsteps echoing on the pavement. Star sparkled in the now midnight colored sky.
"I think I'll head straight home. I gotta get up early tomorrow for Kagi."
"You sure love to baby him." Sasaki hummed, placing his hands in his coat jacket.
"I'm just helping him out." Hirano sighed. Why did everyone think it was weird? Can't you be nice to your friends anymore? He mentally shook his head.
They took the train and got off at their designated stops. "Well, see ya then," Sasaki waved, and Hirano waved back nodding.
As Sasaki walked down the quiet street, he reached for his phone and wondered if he should use it. If I texted Miyano now, would that be too clingy? We did already text today... he fiddled with the object for long drawn out minutes as he kept walking, until he reached the front gate and came to a stop. Opening the messaging app, he stared at it for a few seconds. He rubbed the back of the neck before quickly closing it and shoving it in his pocket, and hastily trotted into his house. He greeted his family once he entered the pleasantly warm living room.
-
Another week had passed, and Sasaki was getting closer and closer to finishing his exams, to which Miyano was getting more excited but also more impatient about. But it's not like he just had free time to idle while he waited, he also had lots to do, being vice-chairman of the committee.
"Is Miyano here?" Miyano lifted his head at the call. The chairman called from the front door and Miyano went to join him.
"Sorry for calling you out of the blue. I saw the teacher and he gave me some extra paperwork, and I was wondering if you could help me with them, but I didn't want to call a meeting just for that..." He rubbed the back of his neck, looking away awkwardly.
"Okay," The raven-haired smiled. "I'll come help after classes."
"Great, thanks a lot!" The chairman cheered and waved as he left and walked back to his class.
Later in the day, as promised Miyano headed towards the committee room at the end of classes. He greeted the chairman who was putting his bag down as he also just got here too.
"Thanks again Miyano-sempai" He lowered his head in apology.
"It's no trouble at all, really." Miyano nodded as he took a seat and just as he did his phone beeped. Miyano swiftly opened the message.
[Hope you're having a good day <3]
Miyano lips upturned.
[I am, thank you, and I hope you too! Also good luck with your studies today too] Miyano typed.
[Thanks, and same to you sweetee <3]
Miyano's face instantly flushed bright red and he suddenly clutched his phone. Sasaki was playing so unfair! Miyano already had a hard time staying calm even though he desperately wanted to see his boyfriend right now. How could he just flirt all of a sudden and catch him off guard!
"Hggnn," Miyano hid his head on his desk, wrapping his hands around to the top of his head and curled himself to try to calm his rapid beating heart.
"Uhh, you okay Miyano-sempai?" The chairman raised an eyebrow, holding the papers he wanted to give to Miyano.
"I'm fine!" Miyano squeaked, then cleared his throat and straightened up. "I'm fine," He held out his hands to take the papers and started going through them.
They chatted about what to do next for the committee. The clock ticked quietly to the beat of time.
-
As the sky turned midnight blue once again and the stars shimmered gently, Miyano quietly finished the last of his homework for the day. He stretched when he finished and strode to his bookshelf, looking for one of his fav manga to reread. He plopped on his bed and layed chest forward, rocking his legs back and forth as he read. But the more he read about his favorite ship, the more he would miss his boyfriend, and he sighed, putting the book down.
He glanced at his phone on the small self near his bed. Sasaki should have finished what he's doing and be headed to bed too soon. He should be able to call him now, after all, they would sometimes call and wish each goodnight. He sat up cross legged and reached for his phone, typing Sasaki's number. He brought the phone to his ear, his heartbeat quickened as he listened to the ring tone.
"Miya-chan!"
"Ah, h-hey Shuumei-san. How are you?"
"I'm great now that you called."
Miyano's face flushed at his boyfriend's usual openness. "T-that's good to hear..." He muttered, and Sasaki chuckled at the cute reaction, earning a pout from the raven-haired.
Miyano felt his body relax at Sasaki's presence, even if it was just his voice, and leaned slightly on one arm, loosening his legs.
"How's your studying going?" He asked, leaning his head against the phone.
"It's going well thanks to Hirano who's been helping me alot. I definitely owe him one after exams are over."
Miyano chuckled at Hirano's commitment. It seems he couldn't quite get rid of his committee persona after all.
Miyano tapped his finger against the soft mattress, biting his lips, gathering his courage. He took a moment to ponder his next sentence. "I can't wait for us to meet up again." He suddenly felt embarrassed. Now that he said it out loud he could see how childish it sounded. But at the same time he did want to let his boyfriend know that he missed him. Very much.
"Then come over," The ginger stated matter of fact, like it was the easiest math equation he had to answer.
Miyano instantly straightened up. "I can't! I don't want to get in the way of your studying, especially since it's almost over now!" Miyano responded.
"I'm joking," Sasaki laughed, like he always does when he tries to avoid a subject. But Miyano grew unsettled. He knows now that when Sasaki says this he actually means the opposite, but tries to hide it.
"Shuumei-san," The raven-haired boy grew serious. "You know I'm not avoiding you, right? I miss you and want to see you so much..."
"I know, I know, don't worry." And he did, truly. It's one of the many things Sasaki loves about his boyfriend: how earnest he is. He's kind of jealous of that, and wishes he could be more like Miyano. Sasaki looked down at his knees, fiddling with his blanket sheets. I want to be able to express myself better like he does, he promised to himself.
"Okay," Miyano sighed. He glanced at the clock. "Well it's getting late, so you better get some sleep now."
"Same goes for you Miya-chan, don't pull another BL all nighter."
"I won't!" The raven-haired retorted, his cheeks red. Sasaki chuckled.
"Goodnight then, sweet dreams,"
"Goodnight, I love you,"
"I love you too,"
Miyano put his phone back on his desk, and gazed at it. Despite the strong front he put up, he really did miss Sasaki. He signed and laid down, burying his face in his pillow. What if... he called back, and asked if they could see each other, for just 1 hour? He clutched his pillow. It wouldn't hurt, would it?
He suddenly sat up straight. No! What was he thinking? That's way too childish, and besides Shuumei-san's almost done with exams. He's waited this long, he can wait a little longer. He clapped his cheeks once to bring his attention back to the present. He could hear the distant sound of cars humming by. Footsteps lightly patted the floor as Miyano made his way downstairs to the living room where his mom hung out just before bed, enjoying her late night show.
She turned her head at the appearance of her son with a curious look.
"Yoshi-kun? What's wrong?"
Miyano plopped himself next to his mom on the sofa. He shuffled his feet and held his hands together looking down absently, not paying attention to the sound of the TV. His mom patiently waited. She knew he would tell her whenever he was ready.
"Do you miss dad when he's away?"
That definitely took her by surprise, not seeing this one coming at all. But her stupor didn't last long and she placed her hand on Miyano's shoulder, softly rubbing him, and moving her hand to brush his soft hair, a gentle smile adorning her face.
"Of course I do."
Miyano leaned on his mom's shoulder, enjoying the gentle touch and closed his eyes.
"It's perfectly normal to miss someone you love."
Miyano hummed in reply. She brushed a strand behind his ear. "So you don't need to worry about feeling lonely."
"Thanks mom" He mumbled, sleep finally washing over him as he could relax, his anxious feelings drifting away.
"Of course,"
-
Clouds drifted in a variety of shapes and forms across the bright pacific colored sky. Miyano lightly stepped up to Sasaki's door. Eyes sparkling. He felt giddy to finally meet up with his boyfriend. He rang once and kept his hand lingered on the soft metallic surface. He couldn't help the wide grin spreading across his face. Finally.
The familiar door opened, revealing his boyfriend's usual tall figure, unkempt peach hair and bright wide smile.
Miyano stayed still, looking back with a dazed expression. There he was. Finally.
Sasaki felt slight concern welling up inside him at his slightly shorter partner who wasn't making a move and just stood still at the doorway. "Miya-chan?"
Sudden relief washed over the raven-haired boy and a tiny tear, barely noticeable, dropped down his cheek. Sasaki did see it however and panicked.
"Miya-chan?!" In a flash Sasaki brought Miyano close to him, one hand cupping his cheek, the other firmly placed on his shoulder. "What's happened? What's wrong?"
Miyano snapped out of his daze. "Ah!" He quickly moved his hands to join with the ginger's. "Sorry, I'm fine! I'm completely fine, don't worry." But Sasaki wasn't convinced one bit. How could he be when he just saw Miyano cry? He kept frowning, waiting for his boyfriend to say more.
"I just - I don't know what came over me." He looked down feeling the embarrassment flush his face. "It's just when I saw you I realized how much I missed you and wanted to see you, and suddenly you're right here in front of me and I couldn't help feeling relieved - I'm sorry, I'm not making any sense..." He trailed off, not really knowing where he was going with this.
Clarity brightened Sasaki's mind as Miyano went on. Sasaki just watched with wide eyes at how amazing it all sounded to him. He missed me so much that he...? Sasaki dropped his hands. No way that can't be...
Miyano looked up curiously. "Shuumei-san?"
The tables turned as Sasaki was now the one suddenly filled with a surge of emotions. Tears fell down his amber eyes as well, like droplets sprinkling across his cheeks.
"Shuumei-san?!" Miyano lifted his hands in panic, unsure of where to put them. "What happened? Did I do something wrong?" Aaaa, this was not how he imagined his reunion to be. He waved his hands around wanting to hug Sasaki but uncertain if it was the right time.
Sasaki suddenly laughed at the mess they were both in, and whipped his face with his arm. "I'm fine too! I'm more than fine, I'm so happy right now!" He embraced and squeezed and held his boyfriend firmly into a hug, burying his face in Miyano's shoulders. "You missed me so much that you cried?" He mumbled from the fabric, unable to contain his goofy grin and trembling voice and how much love he felt right now.
"I-" Miyano wrapped his arms around his boyfriend too. "I guess so yeah..." The flush came back and warmed his cheeks and neck. But another emotion quickly took over his embarrassment. How much he feels safe and secure and loved by his boyfriend right now. I missed this so much. He buried his head deeper into the crook of Sasaki's neck, listening to Sasaki's heartbeat. He felt so at ease and safe that he could feel his muscles and body relax.
They stood there for a bit, enjoying each other's warm embrace. Until Sasaki decided to finally make a move. "That's it." He leaned over and lifted Miyano by the legs and Miyano let out a surprised gasp as he felt his feet lift up into the air, clutching Sasaki by the shoulders so he didn't fall. "I'm kidnaping you." Sasaki stated matter of fact and brought the two of them into his house.
"Eh??" Miyano cried out and Sasaki laughed at his boyfriend's cute reaction as he strode down the hall up to his room. Miyano's heartbeat quickened as his BL mind raced with all the possibilities this could lead to and his cheeks spontaneously blushed bright red. What's Shuumei-san's plan? Miyano pondered nervously yet excitedly at the same time. As they climbed the stairs, the gentle scent of Sasaki's apricot scented shampoo wafted to his nose, calming his fast beating heart, and a small smile formed on his lips.
Sasaki softly placed Miyano down on his bed who propped himself up, crossing his legs, and the ginger landed next to him, the bed bouncing a little, a big smile still adorning his face. "Wanna cuddle?"
Miyano eagerly nodded, eyes beaming with happiness. Without giving his boyfriend a second to react, Sasaki jumped into the slimer one's arms, landing on top of him, both of them landing with a soft bounce against the mattress. Sasaki really could not stop grinning as much as he tried that his cheeks hurt. He rolled to the side, embracing and holding his boyfriend like his life depended on it. "I'm not going to let you go." The ginger proclaimed as he nuzzled further into Miyano's neck who giggled at the ticklish feeling.
"Good, because I don't want you to." Miyano wrapped his arms around Sasaki's back, moving in closer to erase any distance left between them. Sasaki's love was immeasurable. No words or numbers could show the flood of emotions he felt right now. The way this boy could make him feel so many new and different and raw emotions was still something that astounded him. If you had told his younger - more self isolated - self that one day he'd experience such intense love in his life, he'd have told you to go get your brain checked. If only his past self could see him now. See that the apathy he once felt would disappear without leaving a trace. The ginger took a deep breath and began to absently brush his fingers through Miyano's raven hair.
They cradled and brushed their hands against each other and Miyano relinquished this feeling too. How he'd longed for this touch. For a month they weren't able to meet in person, and for a month (that felt like an endless eternity) he'd longed for and missed the regular hugs and kisses and cuddles they'd usually give each other. Miyano parted slightly from the hug just so he could look into Sasaki's amber eyes, who watched him back so full of love, brushing his hand against Miyano's cheek once before placing it on his hip. Miyano shifted forward to graze his lips against the ginger's who closed his eyes at the touch, before melting into an actual kiss. Sasaki leaned in and cupped the nape of Miyano's neck, idly fiddling with the back of his hair, and Miyano responded by cupping the ginger's face, trailing his fingers around the tall one's jawline then back to his neck and the beginning of his shoulder.
Sasaki parted and leaned their foreheads together, eyes glowing with so much emotion. "You're so unfair Miya-chan, you drive me crazy, you know that?"
"Sorry," Miyano chuckled at how open his boyfriend loved to be.
"You're not sorry at all."
"No, I'm not."
They quietly laughed as they continued to embrace each other in comfortable silence. The room was quiet and peaceful. Miyano leaned into Sasaki's chest once more, enjoying the rhythmic heartbeat, a relaxed smile took place. Sasaki leaned his chin atop the shorter one's head and went back to brushing his fingers against Miyano's hair slowly, enjoying its soft texture. A phone beeped on the desk (probably Sasaki's sister saying she'll be late) as light shined through the window and cast shadows in patterns across the room's floor. Distant soft sounds of cars passing through interrupted the silence from time to time, as they slowly drifted off to sleep.
-
The doorbell rang and Sasaki joyfully skipped forward as he swiftly opened the front door. The slender raven-haired boy greeted him with a bright smile.
"Shuumei-san!" Miyano excitedly called. "I brought the ingredients you asked for!" He lifted the bag up in the air.
"Awesome! Come on in!" The tall one ushered his boyfriend in, Miyano still smiling brightly as he thanked him.
"Miyano's here?" Hirano commented, eyes widening. He was taking out the utensil they would be needing and stopped in his tracks.
"Yep," Sasaki replied and turned to the raven-hair. "You can put 'em on the table here." The tall ginger tied his apron as he got ready for their baking session.
"Why is he here?"
"I told him we were meeting up for some valentine's chocolate and he demanded he be here too." Sasaki chuckled as the blond's expression slowly turned from confused into a glare.
- Flashback -
"Are you free later today?" Miyano wondered, as he called up Sasaki during his homework.
"Sorry, I'm baking valentine's chocolate with Hirano today," The ginger replied, holding the phone by his shoulder and ear as he quickly scribbled answers on his worksheet.
"You what?"
"Yeah, he wants to give them to his roommate." Sasaki continued, absentmindedly, not fully aware of what he was telling his boyfriend and how it would affect him.
"He WHAT?"
"Yeah, so I'm busy today, sorry," Sasaki flipped the page and continued on the next one.
"PLEASE" Miyano begged and gripped his phone with both hands. "Let me come over too!" His eyes widened with emotion as he excitedly bobbed up and down on his bed. "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, PLEASE! I NEED to come and see this!"
Sasaki stopped in his tracks as he just now fully realized what he'd told his boyfriend.
And so Miyano joined the squad.
- End Flashback -
"God damn it Sasaki..." Hirano facepalmed.
"Sorry," Sasaki rubbed the back of his neck with an embarrassed smile. It was bound to happen sooner or later.
"Fine," Hirano turned to the slightly shorter boy. "I'll let you stay as long as you don't imagine even more crazy things." He lightly bonked his kouhai on the head to affirm his statement.
"I can't promise that." Miyano replied matter of fact, earning a pinch on his cheek from the blond. "owowow okay I'm sowwy let go..." and Hirano did. Sasaki chuckled. He noticed Miyano rubbing his cheek and leaned over. He took Miyano's hand away and pecked him on the cheek. Miyano grew flustered.
"There, all better." Sapphire eyes met amber ones and Sasaki couldn't help but notice the cute blush on his boyfriend. He's just too cute.
Hirano looked away from secondhand embarrassment, and before long they finally started their backing session.
The day passed rather quickly as they laughed and played, learning how to bake together. The long lonely drawn out month was now a distant memory, quickly forgotten, whilst they enjoyed the time they spent together with their loved ones. Wishing for it to never end.
