Kakashi found Iruka exactly where he expected. On the anniversary of the Kyuubi’s attack, Iruka retreated to a small shrine near the forest and lit candles for hours.
“When I was a child,” Iruka had explained once, “Sandaime suggested this. I was awful on the first anniversary of their death, and he probably thought it would get me out of his hair for an hour or two, but I found it soothing. So I stayed until it was dark, and he came to find me. The second year, I brought myself, and it was wonderful again. So I’ve been coming every year I can.”
After becoming Hokage, Kakashi asked if he could join Iruka sometimes. After Naruto became Hokage, they had settled into this. Iruka would leave early in the morning, taking enough food for breakfast and lunch, and Kakashi would join him at some point during the day. Kakashi always arrived before dinner, bringing enough food for both of them and always Umino family favorites.
So here he was, again, stowing dinner away, dropping a small kiss on Iruka’s head, and then lighting two candles before settling into a meditation position to have his annual conversation with his in-laws.
