A Demon's Heartbreak

Summary:

Sebastian's heart is broken after a contract ends.

Work Text:

You knew this was the end. It had been ten years since you made the deal with a demon for better health, along with riches and fame. It was a typical, overused wish but it granted you happiness for the last ten years. Now, your butler, Sebastian, the demon who had formed the bond with you carried you to the mountains where you made your wish. He had protected you, guided you, helped you through your highs and lows. A part of him almost seemed like he was regretting this, but you knew he must be starving for his meal.

“Will it hurt, Sebastian?” You had asked as he sat you on a wooden bench. You weren’t ready to face what had waited for you on the other side. You knew you were going to hell, but you were starting to wish you hadn’t formed a deal with a demon. The idea was swallowing you whole. Burning for eternity, being tortured until you can hardly walk. It was a terrifying thought, yet despite being terrified, you welcomed it. It was your fate that you so willingly signed for.

“It will be most painful, I am afraid.” He answered as he removed his gloves, his eyes flashing that fuschia pink colour that illuminated the midnight sky.

“Sebastian, before we end this…” you took in a deep breath, glancing at him with a soft yet warm smile on your face. “I just wanted to thank you for everything. These past ten years meant so much to me…” You said as a tear dropped from your right eye, as you sniffled softly. “You may be a demon but, I just wanted you to know that you’re a lot kinder than most humans, and I-...” you paused, sniffling once more as you tried to gather your words without your voice cracking. “I just wanted you to know that I know it’s all mostly an act, a facade, but I never once believed that to be true.”

Sebastian was taken aback, obviously never having received such a confession from a contractee before. Sure he’s had people beg him to spare their lives, and often he’d just gruesomely beat them before devouring every bit of their delectable soul. But with you on the other hand, he felt even more regret. He had to admit to himself that he had in fact fallen in love with a human being.

He knew he would be laughed at and looked down upon for letting himself get too close to a human, but a part of him wanted to offer a new deal. But this would mean turning you into an immortal being. He could turn you into a demon, but you were just too pure to be devoured by such darkness. Your soul, despite tainted by your bond, was so pure that he didn’t want to let it go to waste.

“My Lord/Lady/Liege, might I propose a new contract?” Sebastian offered, for the first time he felt incredibly hesitant in speaking. Usually he had an answer, a question, a comment, etc. for any type of situation. But now, this was the first time he was nervous speaking out.

You looked at him in confusion, unsure of what exactly he was going to propose. You were ready to give him your soul, you could already feel your life slipping away from you.

“I would like to make you my immortal darling, you will remain by my side for all of Earth’s eternity.” He offered, yet it broke your heart. He had fallen in love with you. Sure at one point you held romantic feelings for the demon, but you had lost those feelings when you realised a demon could never love you as you loved him.

“Sebastian…” you nearly choked on your own sob as you placed a hand on his cheek as he knelt in front of you. “I am sorry, but I do not harbour those feelings for you. It would be unfair to you.” You answered apologetically, and you could tell you had crushed his demonic heart if he had one. You could see a fire growing inside of him that felt like heartbreak and jealousy. “At one point I had those same feelings, but it would be unfair to you as a demon who cannot truly feel love.”

“I… I understand.” For the first time, Sebastian had stuttered. He did indeed feel heartbroken, and rage was forming inside of him but he kept it buried. Now was the time to take her soul, when he really didn’t want to. You were perfect, you would’ve been the perfect mate for him. But now, he had to take your life away instead of prolonging it for eternity.

He leaned in, placing a gentle kiss on your lips as he started the process of extracting your soul from your body. It felt like your insides were being torn apart, it was far more painful than anything you had ever felt. You wanted to scream, but you couldn’t.

Then you could feel yourself growing sleepy, and that’s when it all went black. Your life had faded away, and you were now cold as ice. Your body temperature now matched his cold exterior. He pulled back, regret was filling his demonic body as he felt like he should’ve forced you into immortality. But he knew you’d hate him for it. Hell, you would even end up killing him for it and he’d understand.

But now here he was, carrying your lifeless body to the grave he kept of the many others he had contracted before. Burying you beside the late Ciel Phantomhive. There was no particular reason why he had buried you next to the Earl of Phantomhive. Though he had admitted to himself despite the many annoyances the Phantomhive boy brought him, he had grown fond of the child as if Ciel were his own. A part of him wishing you could have met the Earl. Knowing you two would’ve grown fond of each other as well, but now your soul rested within him. A sense of sorrow and loneliness filled him strongly.

He left his own personal cemetery, fading into the darkness ready to listen for his next summoner’s calling card. And although he had devoured your soul, he still felt your ever lingering presence walking beside him. Your chattering words filled his ears and though at times he found it annoying, there were a few times where he wished he had joined you in on a few conversations.

But now he knew better than to get close with humans. This heartbreak he had felt deep within his bones was far too much, and now it left him cold and empty. An emptiness that craved to have someone to fill the void he hated so much. He never knew that even as a demon, human emotions could still affect him. After all, it had been aeons since he had been human. He had forgotten long ago what it was like to feel such emotions, and he remembered how much better he felt when he no longer could feel human emotions.

Now he was lost in the void, waiting to be summoned and ready to start the next journey in his long and lonely demonic life. Waiting for someone to call his own.
