Work Text:
It was late at night on a rooftop. Misty the Space Thief, an anthropomorphic cat-like creature, sat on the edge of the building's rooftop. She was looking out at the moon. It wasn't fully visible yet, as it was just past midnight. There were no other people around. A stray cloud passed in front of it and obscured some of its light. On top of that, there was a foggy layer hiding much of the stars from view.
She was only here if she missed her life as a Jetter, but this time... it was different. She missed talking to Chris the Zorua. He didn't take anything seriously, which made him easy going and fun to be around. He never cared about her previous space thief life, and just accepted her for who she really was.
"I wonder what he's doing right now..." Misty thought aloud. "Chris would probably be with his friends somewhere."
There was a sound behind her. Misty turned around to see a strange creature walking towards her. It had a large head and huge eyes. The creature's ears were long like her own. They wielded a hammer that looked like it was future-proof in terms of design. It had a long tail and stood on two legs.
"Whoa! What are you?" Misty asked.
The creature chuckled. "I'm a lombax. I'm Rivet. That's my hammer," she said, pointing at it.
"What are you doing here? This area is off limits after dark."
Rivet shrugged. "I wanted to get away for a while. I don't care about staying inside or not. You're a thief, aren't you?"
Misty smirked and chuckled. "Well, yeah. Aren’t you astute? Though I wouldn't consider myself one anymore."
"Why's that?"
"I got caught by a little fox and he turned me to better opportunities. Now I've got a new job. More than a job, actually. I'm helping out here in Zoruopolis sometimes! The name's Misty."
Rivet walked over to the edge of the building rooftop and looked down at the city below. "This place is huge. So many buildings, so many people, and all kinds of different places. It's amazing how much stuff there is in the world."
"Yeah. It's pretty impressive," Misty agreed.
They both watched the cityscape from atop the roof.
"So, why are you here?" Misty asked.
"I want to find something that might help me... with my mission."
"Your mission?"
"Yes. I have one. My world has been invaded by an evil force, and I need to stop them."
"Well, maybe they'll attack us soon."
"Maybe. But I have no idea what I'm supposed to do when that happens."
"Hmm... I think I know a few things. If you ever need help, just let me know. I have experience with fighting."
"Thanks." Rivet smiled. "That's very kind of you. In fact, maybe we should go look for some treasure together sometime. We could split the reward."
Misty laughed. "Are you trying to turn me back to that life?"
Rivet laughed as well. "Not really, but hey, things happen." After a moment of silence, she asked, "So, what more can you tell me about this fox you know?"
Misty's face blushed. "Um, well, his name is Chris. He's a Zorua."
Rivet tilted her head. "Chris... the Zorua?" Misty nodded and pulled out her smartphone. She pulled up a picture of Chris.
"He looks kinda cute," Rivet said. "And he seems nice."
"Yep. That's him. And he's very kind to me, despite my past. He’s done a lot of writing as an author."
"You sure seem happy to be with him."
“Yeah,” Misty sighed. "I'm sorry, I'm not used to having someone interested in me."
"Oh, no problem. I'm always curious about new relationships. It sounds like you really like him."
"Well, he does make me feel special." Misty thought back to her days traveling the galaxy with Chris just to help him write better stories, especially for a future novelization of the Jetters' biography. "Y’know, he's pretty similar to you."
"Me?"
"Yeah. Both of you are quite enthusiastic around new people, but once you start to get close to someone, you..." Misty stopped herself. "Never mind. Let's talk about something else."
Rivet nodded. "Alright."
There was a chime from Misty's phone. She checked the screen and gasped. "My flight leaves in twenty minutes! I gotta go!"
Rivet nodded. "We'll talk later, Misty."
"Okay. Thanks again!" Misty said, and ran off.
Rivet watched her leave. "See ya." She couldn't help but think she had a chance now at saving her own dimension, but she still had so many questions.
