And that's how Kuroo got a girlfriend thanks to Kenma

Summary:

You're out shopping with your friends, when you decide to stop at GameStop to buy a new videogame. There you bump into a very shy blond haired guy...

Work Text:

Today it was a particularly chill day for Kuroo.
No practice, no studying on his schedule.
He only had to accompany Kenma to the Game Stop.
To be honest, Kenma wasn't quite fond of the idea, but he had insisted.
«I'm perfectly capable of managing my money, Kuroo.» he said, complaining again.
Kuroo looked at him.
«No, you're not. At least when it comes to games. You said you had to buy the new Crash Bandicoot one or something.
I know you would end up buying more than one if you were alone.»
«I'm telling you, it wouldn't happen.»
He shook his head.
«It would. And I'm here to prevent that. Come on, let's go inside.»

Finally a break.
This week had been awful, just awful.
You entered game stop with your friends, who were utterly complaining because they wanted to shop for clothes.
«Oh come on, it'll be brief. I only need to find the game and pay for it. Stop bitching.» you said, snorting.
Now, where was it?
Your PS4 at home was utterly complaining.
You hadn't been able to play the new Persona 5 spin off.
«Persona 5 strikers..where is it..» you kept skimming through the shelves.
Oh no, the switch games were next.
As you were about to go to the counter, you bumped into a guy.
«Sorry. I wasn't paying enough attention.» you said, looking at the stranger.
A blonde guy with a red sweater, looking very bored.
He nodded, not paying any attention to you.
As you were about to tell him to at least apologize, a tall guy with the same sweater and insanely spiky hair approached you.
«You must excuse him. He's not rude. He's just very shy.»
You sighed.
«That shouldn't be an excuse though.» you complained.
The tall guy sighed, putting a hand on his forehead.
«I know. I've always told him to apologize. He never listens to me.»
«Yeah okay, it's fine.» you were hectic, you wanted to buy the game.
Your friends were staring at you.
«Anyway, my name is Kuroo Tetsurō. He's Kenma.»
You awkwardly introduced yourself and proceeded to go to the counter.
You asked the clerk for the game, and payed for it.
As you went out of the store, the guy named Kenma stopped you.
«Oh, hey, uhm..I'm sorry I bumped into you.» he kept looking at his switch.
The guy named Kuroo scolded him.
«Didn't I tell you you should look in people's eyes when talking to them?! You're hopeless..»
you shook your head.
«It's fine, really. I appreciate his apologies, thank you. I must get going now.»
The blonde guy named Kenma nodded, but Kuroo stopped him.
«Wait a second. I'd like to get to know you, here's my number.» and handed you a small piece of paper with his number and name written on it.
You took it, confused, and smiled politely.
They both went away, and your friends were in utter shock.

«You DON'T know him????» they were squealing to say the least.
«Huh? Why would I know him?» you put the piece of paper and the game in your bag.
«You're hopeless! He's Kuroo Tetsuroo, the captain of the Nekoma high school volleyball team! He's so handsome..» and stared at your bag.
«Why are you looking at my bag???» you said, keeping it close to you.
«If you don't want his number, may we have it???»
they were greedy.
«Hm..if he gave it to me, maybe there's a reason? If he wanted to give it to you I'm pretty sure he would have done it. Doesn't seem like the shy type to me.»
They were smirking.
«Oh..seems like he struck some fancy? Never seen you do that face before.» was it true?
He seemed confident, very confident.
Maybe it was the reason why you were kind of attracted to him?
You glanced away, avoiding that conversation.
«Didn't you complain that you wanted to go shopping? Why are you standing still??» and started walking towards a random store.

He seemed interesting, to say the least.
Tall, handsome, confident. Just your type.
You pondered for a moment if you should call him.
Should you..? Nah.
He wouldn't be interested in you, would he?
You sighed. No point worrying about it now.

Kuroo couldn't stop thinking about that girl he had seen at the gamestop.
Maybe she'd call him..
But to be honest, he didn't expect much.
He had given her his number out of cockiness, that's all.
He was sure she wasn't gonna call.
Unless he saw her again..
«Kenma, what if I become interested in video games?» he asked the blonde guy.
«You suck at them anyway. Don't tell me you want to go to gamestop in hope to see that girl again.» and continued to game as if he hadn't just exposed Kuroo's absurd idea.
But maybe it wasn't that absurd?

Why were you at the gamestop exactly?
No new game to buy, so..?
A few days had passed, and you found yourself aimlessly strolling through the gamestop aisles, looking for a non existing game.
«Yeah, this title looks interesting..» you murmured to yourself, mainly to convince yourself that you were there for the games, not a black spiky haired guy.
You didn't even have a switch, for fuck's sake!
«Oh? It's you.» great, now you were imagining things like his voice.
You didn't turn around.
He gently put a hand on your shoulder.
«Hey.» wait what? He was really there?
«Uh? H-hey!» you gasped, shocked that he was really there.
«Did I startle you? Sorry.» he said, looking smug.
«Oh, no, you didn't startle me at all. I was just too focused on the games. Sorry.» you tried to regain your composure, as you looked at him.
«Oh, I'm sure you were. Anyways, why didn't you call me? I gave you my number for a reason you know..which is not contemplating the piece of paper» his smugness was hot, very hot.
«Oh well, in my defense, I did not just contemplate it. I defended it from my way too eager friends who wanted it..» you said, lost in your thoughts.
«Oya? You didn't want your friends to have my number? Now that's an interesting turn of events..»
he smirked, looking at you up and down.
«This outfit suits you by the way.» you slightly blushed.
«Thank you very much.»
«So, you were saying you defended the piece of paper with your life?»
You snorted.
«It sounds way more dramatic this way. But yes, kinda.»
«And why, if I might ask? If you weren't interested you could've given them the paper, you know.»
You gave him a side look.
«Oh well, pride I guess.
They totally lectured me telling me about your fame in volleyball and such.
And they were looking at my bag like a dog looks at a piece of juicy meat, so yeah.»
Did you just admit that?
Kuroo seemed amused.
«You're an interesting person.
First girl who's been so honest in barely 5 minutes of conversation.»
You blushed a little.
«Thanks, I guess? So um, where is Kenma?»
Kuroo seemed confused.
«Kenma?»
«Isn't Kenma his name? The blonde guy I bumped onto last time. I thought his name was Kenma..»
You scratched your chin.
«Oh, no, his name is Kenma. But I'm alone today.
That's why I was surprised.»
You sighed of relief.
«So I did get his name right. Nice. Anyways, if he's not with you, what are you doing here? You don't strike me as the one who fancies video games.»
«Maybe I do, maybe I don't. Or maybe I came here to see you.»
Your eyes widened in shock.
«You did what?»
He looked smug.
«Oh well, you didn't call me. How else is a guy supposed to speak to someone if that someone isn't calling?»
You coughed a bit.
«Uhm, yeah, so..why did you want to speak with me?»
«I've already told you, haven't I?
You're interesting. And I'm interested.»
You nodded, unable to stop your face from turning red, and your heart from fluttering because of his lack of any filters.
«And shy, if I'm seeing correctly.»
«Very.» you looked down as you said it, not being able to hold proper eye contact.
«Oh well, why don't we get out of this place and maybe go somewhere else?»
You looked at him.
«Define somewhere else.» your face serious.
«Sheesh, relax. It's not anywhere creepy.
I was actually thinking of eating something, that's all. You can decide what to eat.»
You pondered for a moment.
It was the mall, full of people.
If the situation ever got weird, you would be able to scream your way out.
Fuck it. Let's do it.
«In that case, I'm in the mood for some ice cream.» you said, leaving the Switch game on the shelf, and making your way to the entrance of the gamestop.
«Excellent.»

You two made your way to an ice cream place inside the mall, and ordered some ice cream.
You then sat down.
«Oh and by the way, I would've given your friends my number if I was interested. They come to watch us practice every week.
Actually, watching isn't the right term.
Gawk is far more appropriate.»
You shook your head.
«Geez. I've always told them that being creepy isn't gonna take them anywhere, yet they can't help it.
I'm so sorry if they ever made you feel uncomfortable.»
Kuroo giggled, and ate some ice cream.
«Oh, I don't mind. Tons of people watch our official matches, so it's not like I'm not used to people looking at us.
Lev on the other hand, is very pissed because they're not gawking over him.»
You nearly choked on your ice cream.
«No way. And who is Lev?»
«The tallest, stupidest, and most ridiculously overly confident volleyball player you'll ever meet.
He's joined our ranks only recently, and doesn't know shit about volleyball.
He's a good guy though.
He might be stupid, but he's good.»
You nodded along with what he was saying.
«I see. It certainly seems like he enjoys the attention.»
Kuroo giggled once again.
His laugh was cute, you reckoned.
«He definitely does. But, alas, I'm more popular with girls. Even though he only cares about volleyball recognition, he's too dense to understand those girls aren't praising me as a player.
It's funny seeing him all grumpy though.»
You giggled.
«Your evil grin is hilarious.» you just said, continuing to eat as if nothing had happened.
You could swear a small blush had appeared on his cheeks, but it faded as soon as it came.
Had you just imagined it?
«Enough about me though. Tell me about yourself.
Do you do any sports?»
«I used to. Not volleyball though. I actually can't stand volleyball. Playing it I mean. So every-time we're forced to play, I'm always embarrassing myself. I used to dance though.
Now that's something I'm skilled at.»
«Maybe I could help you with volleyball.
You know, our team plays at nationals next spring.»
«Oh, I didn't know. Congratulations?»
«Thank you. So, how do you say I helped you with volleyball?»
You shook your head.
«Thank you for the offer, really. But it truly isn't my thing, believe me.
Oh, wait, now that I think about it, you and Kenma were wearing the same jacket. Is he part of the team too?»
Kuroo nodded.
«Yes. Believe it or not, he's the heart of our team.»
«But I thought you had to be tall to play volleyball?»
Kuroo shook his head.
«Technically, yes. But you see, there are some roles short people can play in.
Besides, Kenma's strength certainly doesn't lie in height, nor jumping or sprinting.
He's a setter, and the core of any of our strategies.
You'd actually be impressed with how savage he can get on the court.»
«Really? No way. He seems like he wouldn't hurt a fly unless it was bothering his gaming time.»
Kuroo bursted out laughing.
«You nailed his personality. That's for sure.»
You bursted laughing as well.
Spending time with Kuroo seemed..refreshing.
You wiped off a tear from your face, caused by all the laughing.
«Ok. What the heck. Why did I laugh?» you asked, well knowing it was because his laugh was contagious.
«Because I'm just that charming.»
«Oh so you're not a clown?» you decided to tease him a bit.
«How dare you. Now I'm gonna demand an apology.»
His serious face made you laugh even more.
«Seriously. You'll have to make it up to me. And that can be easily arranged by you coming to one of our practice games against Karasuno.»
You looked at him, curious.
«Is this a trick to take me on a date?» you asked, somehow talking out of your ass.
«Possibly. Only one way to find out.»
His smirk was doing all the talking, in all honesty, but you went along with it.
«And who's this Karasuno?»
«Just the most unpredictable and unstable and yet strong team in the Miyagi prefecture.»
«Miyagi? I've never been there.»
«They're coming to our school to practice next week.
Will you be there?»
You pondered for a moment.
«What if my friends are there? It'll be totally awkward..»
Kuroo gave you a look of disapproval.
«So what? You can't always think about others you know.»
Ouch.
Right there.
You sighed.
«I know, but it would totally be awkward..»
Kuroo looked at you in the eyes, the intensity of his stare making it impossible for you to look away.
«If your friends really end up being there, you can just make them jealous.
It is not my intention to pry, don't get me wrong, but they seem to look down on you.
When I gave you my number they all looked disgusted..»
You looked down at your nails, lightly tapping your thigh.
«Look, I know. I know what they thought.
But..I can't just walk out.»
You didn't look at him.
«Don't be embarrassed. I totally get your situation.
Wouldn't it be nice to prove them wrong for once?»
«I already had to basically fight to keep your number from getting snatched, I don't feel like fighting over an invitation.»
«Look, the only thing they might want to fight over is me, but I'm not a piece of paper.»
You giggled.
«Way too big to be a piece of paper.
A canvas, maybe.»
He giggled.
«That would surely be interesting.»
«Fine. I'll come. But if they start doing some weird shit, I'm leaving.»
Kuroo looked pleased with himself.
«They won't. Trust me.»
He then continued.
«Oh, by the way, would you mind giving me your number? Trying to catch you at the Game Stop doesn't seem like a practical method.»
You giggled, and took out your phone.
Truth be told, you had saved his number.
So all you did was simply send him a message.

Y: That's my number.
K: Oh, so you did save my number. I can't help but feel very pleased with myself you know.

You looked at him in disbelief.
«What? Can't say I'm pleased with myself? I am a cocky bastard after all.»
You rolled your eyes.
«Figured.»
«But then again, if you didn't find me interesting, you wouldn't be sitting here with me.»
You blushed.
«No need to blush really, just stating simple facts.
There's no shame in being interested in someone.
Take me, am I ashamed of shamelessly flirting with you?»
Your brain short circuited for a sec.
«I hope your volleyball skills are at least worth the praise..» you then said, hoping to shift the topic.
«Oh, believe me, they are. I'm a middle blocker.»
«Awesome. If only I knew what the heck a middle blocker is, then it'd be even more awesome.»
«There are 5 roles in volleyball: wing spikers, who tend to do the scoring, setters, who toss the ball to the wing spikers, opposite, who is a versatile player, libero, who specializes in defense and lastly middle blockers.
They are spikers who also specialize in defense.
Meaning we spike but also are the defensive wall who has to block the other team from scoring.»
You nodded along his whole lecture.
«I see. Then, from what I'm understanding, your height must help immensely.»
He nodded.
«Surely. Height is very handy, not just in volleyball.»
You couldn't help but find a hidden meaning to the latter statement.
You shook it off.
«I see. It's not like I would know anyway, so yeah.»
Kuroo smirked.
«Maybe you will.»

You sighed, looking at the entrance to the Nekoma gym.
Ugh, why did you agree again?
This was bound to be weird.
As you were entering, two guys bumped onto you.
«Ouch.» you said, massaging your sore arm.
You looked at the two.
They had a black hoodie with "Karasuno" written on it.
One of them was almost bald, and the other had a peculiar blonde topknot on his head.
They bowed down, their heavy bags hanging loosely.
«We're so sorry! We weren't looking! Please excuse us!» they said at the same time, loudly.
«It's okay. Don't worry. The soreness has already faded. Please get up.»
You said, and as they got up, they froze in place.
You waved in front of them.
«Uhm..are you guys okay?» you asked, their eyes locked onto you.
«Are you perchance the manager to Nekoma's team???» they asked, eagerly.
You shook your head.
«No, I don't even attend Nekoma to be fair.»
Behind you, you heard someone sobbing, approaching the two Karasuno members.
It was a nekoma player with what appeared to be a blonde mohawk.
«She's not our manager comrade!» and the three of them started sobbing.
A grey haired guy, from Karasuno, approached you.
«You must excuse them. Their brain short-circuits when they see a beautiful girl.
I'm Sugawara by the way.
And the two rascals are Nishinoya and Tanaka.
The one with the blonde hair would be Nishinoya.»
He said, shaking your hand.
As you two were shaking hands, another Karasuno member approached you.
«Those two never fail to embarrass us.
Please ignore them and tell me if they do anything weird to you. I'm Sawamura, the captain.»
You nodded, and introduced yourself.
«So um, what brings you here? Are you here to see the match?»
«As a matter of fact, it's me who brings her here.»
you heard Kuroo's voice from behind you, approaching the three of you.
Kuroo positioned himself beside you, locked in a staring contest with Sawamura.
«Oh, so she's your girlfriend?» Sawamura asked.
«You bet.» Kuroo said, the two of them sharing the weirdest handshake you'd ever seen in your life.
You tugged at Kuroo's shirt.
«Kuroo, can we have a word?»
His face softened.
«Of course, love.»
The two of you made your way to a more discreet spot, and you crossed your arms.
«Since when I'm your girlfriend? Huh?»
Kuroo shrugged.
«Can't you go along with it for a while?» surprisingly enough, he made puppy eyes.
Ugh.
«What's in it for me though?»
«My intention is that of making you fall utterly in love with me.
So you can have me as a prize.»
He kissed your cheek.
You stiffened.
«Maybe next time I could aim better?»
His smug look was..hot.
Ugh.
«I'd like that.» and now you were screwed.
«Oh, I'll make sure to aim really well then.
Now can we play pretend?» he said, holding out his hand.
You shook your head, not even believing what you were dragging yourself into, but ultimately took his hand.
His hand was surprisingly soft.
He intertwined your fingers together, making you blush.
You returned to the much shocked group of people.
You saw a hoard of red clothed guys approach you.
«Kuroo! Since when do you have a girlfriend?!» a rather short guy seemed angry, and punched him on the arm.
«Ouch, Yaku. It's not like I have to tell you guys everything.» you sighed, seeing him bask in his teammates' envy.
«He's got a girlfriend and I don't?!» a tall, too tall guy muttered under his breath.
«Is that Lev?» you whispered in Kuroo's ear, and he nodded, grinning like a child.
«I knew it.» you heard Kenma say, as everyone on the team circled around him.
«Oh, uhm, hi Kenma.» you said, the situation being awkward.
«Hi.» he waved, his eyes glued to his console.
He proceeded to enter the gym, leaving all of them speechless.
You saw the mohawk guy sob with Nishinoya and Tanaka.
As the three of them uncontrollably sobbed, two girls approached them, and the trio seemed to regain some strength.
Not that the two girls seemed interested in them, just their sight was enough.
«Ok, I think that's enough gawking for today, lads.
Get lost already, we have a game to win.» he told his teammates, who couldn't help but gawk at you two.
He then looked at Sawamura, whose face was pure stone.
«Oh, don't worry Kuroo, we will win.» he said.
«Sorry but we're the best team.» Kuroo said, not leaving your hand.
«We'll see.» Sawamura said, and if looks could kill, Kuroo would be dead by now.
Kuroo looked at you, and nodded towards the gym.
You sighed, but then closed your eyes, silently agreeing.
Luckily though, your friends weren't there.
«At least there's that..» you muttered under your breath.
You looked at Kuroo, who was smiling brightly at you.
«Sorry for this charade by the way. I don't know what got into me.»
You sighed.
«You'll have to apologize later, you know.» you said, giving him a playful smile.
«I already said I'll aim better, didn't I?
Isn't that enough?» his grin would not leave his face.
You rolled your eyes, pondering for a moment.
«Uhm..I'll see what I can come up with.
I don't know you that well, do I?
For all I know you could be a murderer.
But thankfully we're in a gym full of people, so I'm safe for now.»
Kuroo tilted his head.
«You really that distrustful?»
You looked away.
«Maybe. Scared, to be honest.»
«Of me?»
«Of people.»
«That's a serious problem, though.
I hope I don't make you too uncomfortable.»
You shook your head.
«As of now, I'm not too uncomfortable.
Thank you for your concern.»
Kuroo hesitantly lifted up his hand.
What was he planning?
As he seemed to ponder for a moment, he finally took action.
You stiffened up, but ultimately calmed down.
He just put a strand of loose hair behind your ear.
You smiled a bit, and he smiled in return.
«We need to do the warm up. Sit wherever you like.» he said, and left your hand.
You looked around. Not many people were there.
As you were sitting down, the blonde girl you had previously seen approached you.
«Oh uhm..hi.» she shyly said, and you said the same.
«Hi.»
«We..um..need help keeping the scores. Would you mind helping me?»
You nodded.
«Sure. Why not.»
You stood up, and followed her to the boarding score.
«I'll keep Karasuno's.» she said, and you positioned yourself next to the Nekoma part of the board.
«I'm Yachi Hitoka by the way. I'll be the manager of Karasuno one day.»
«Oh, I see.» and then you introduced yourself.
You two shook hands, and Yachi seemed hesitant.
«Is something wrong?» you asked.
She shook her head.
«No, no. I'm okay. It's just..»
«Just say it okay? I don't bite, I promise.»
She took a deep breath.
«It just seems incredible to me that Kuroo-san has a girlfriend. He's a very hard person to read.»
You looked at her, stunned.
Now what?
«Uhm, yeah, he's very hard to read. But he's fun to be around, if you get to know him better.»
You had been texting for a week and he seemed fun enough, so you assumed you had said the truth.
Yachi nodded, and then looked away.
The referee blowing the start of the match startled you.
You looked at Kuroo, who gave you a smug look, as to say "Look at me."
You rolled your eyes, shaking your head.

The match went smoothly.
Karasuno had won one set out of three, and had played well, or at least that's what their coach had said.
Kuroo approached you.
«So, are my volleyball skills worth the praise?»
You pondered for a moment.
«Considering I know shit about volleyball, I'm not the most qualified person to say that you know.»
He rolled his eyes.
«You were looking at me though.»
And lowered his face so your eyes could meet at the same level.
Geez was he tall.
«Uhm..so..» your voice trailed off.
His stare was making you nervous.
«I said I'd aim better, didn't I?»
You looked around at the gym full of people.
«I know but..there are so many people here..!»
He stood up straight.
«Not into PDA?»
«Certainly not in a room full of strangers.»
You crossed your arms, putting on an annoyed face.
Kuroo giggled.
«Fine. Let's go then.»
He took your hand, and everybody's eyes were on you.
Ugh.
You two made your way out of the gym, into the chilly air of mid october.
«Is this better?» he asked, as you two approached a tree near a gym.
«Don't you tell me you want to pin me to that tree.» you said, almost laughing.
He took a step towards you.
«Oh, but that's exactly what I'm going to do.»
And then it happened.

Your back was pinned on the tree, and his mouth was on yours.
You instinctively put your hands in his hair, messing it up more than it already was.
His mouth explored yours.
He tasted good, and was a good kisser.
You heard him softly moan in your mouth, and you arched your back.
As you did so, you felt his arm wrapping around your back.
You were trapped now.
Yet somehow didn't feel uncomfortable.
You two continued kissing, and you moaned on his lips.
As you gasped for air, you distanced yourself a bit, only for him to nibble on your lower lip.
You moaned again, and then he kissed your neck.
You distanced him.
«Nah-ah. I think your aim is getting worse, Kuroo.»
you playfully reprimanded him, and grabbed his shirt to guide his face back to yours.
The kiss started again.
His hands explored your body, making you shiver.
The kiss was intense, and left you breathless.
«Seems like your aim isn't bad though.» he said.
You gave him a sly smile.
«Wouldn't you like to know more..»
