“abi! nick! just in time.” kaitlyn stands up and walks over to nick and abi, who are both holding large piles of sticks.
”we got wood!” abi smiles as ryan laughs.
”we’ve already done that joke.”
”it’s mostly just kindling…” nick says anxiously.
”oh, that’s all we need. there’s already a big pile of logs here.” kaitlyn tilts her head toward the middle of the fire pit.
”we could have gotten more but there was a hog- or a boar…but nick was very very brave and took one for the team.” abi smiles again.
”oh my gosh, it can’t be…the hog of hackett’s quarry!” kaitlyn exclaims.
”what?” abi looks at kaitlyn, confused.
“thought you hated that phrase?” ryan looks at kaitlyn.
”big jokes take big sacrifices.” kaitlyn nods towards ryan.
”you’re so brave…” ryan says in fake-disbelief.
”anyways, come on. we should get the fire going soon.” kaitlyn waves her hand toward the fire pit as she walks over.
”i still can’t believe that mr. h is letting us have this party.” nick says while putting his pile of sticks down.
”we deserve it. we’re the best camp councellors he’s ever had!” kaitlyn says sarcastically.
suddenly, fireworks go off in the distance, scaring everyone around the fire pit.
”special delivery!” emma sings as her and jacob walk over to everyone else, jacob holding a wheelbarrow of…mostly melons.
”we bring you a hand-picked selection of only the finest that hackett’s quarry has to offer!” jacob says while squatting down and putting his hands together. emma rolls her eyes as she walks to the fire pit to sit next to abi.
”no freaking way!” nick says as he picks up a small bag from the wheelbarrow.
”yes freaking way-“
”pop, pop, peanut butter butter pops! pop, pop, pop ‘em in your mouth! POP!” nick and jacob both sing in unison while dancing.
”i didn’t even know you could still find these anywhere.”
”hey, hey, hey- don’t grab them like that! you still have to share.” jacob says before snatching the bag back from nick.
”will you two stop being weird so we can get this party started?” kaitlyn rolls her eyes.
——————————
crickets chirp in the distance as the group sits around the fire, everyone calmly listening to the music from the playlist dylan has made.
dylan looks around at the group as ryan’s head rests on his shoulder. kaitlyn is looking annoyed at both nick and jacob, who are fighting over the bag of peanut butter butter pops, while abi and emma and quietly talking as abi shows emma her drawings.
”okay! new idea! party game!” dylan claps his hands to get attention from the others.
everyone groans and ryan sits up, not enthusiastic about dylan’s idea.
”c’mon people, we might never see each other after tonight! let’s make some memories!”
“well, what do you have in mind?” kaitlyn looks over at dylan.
”how about the ultimate game of secrets and lies… truth or dare, but dylan style.” dylan looks at the others, who seem slightly interested. “okay, house rules are…someone asks you truth or dare…then you choose, and then you…do. and there’s no ifs, ands or buts.”
”so, like, normal truth or dare?”
”yyyyes.”
”so we can like, make people kiss.”
”if they choose dare, yeah. as long as everyone consents, of course.”
kaitlyn nods and shrugs her shoulders. “cool beans.”
”i mean keep it in your pants until it’s your turn, but…”
kaitlyn laughs. ”well, who does get to go first?”
”well it’s house deals so…” dylan scans the group then claps his hands as his eyes land on abi. “abigail! truth or dare?”
”umm…” abi thinks for a moment. “truth.”
”really dodged a bullet, huh? alright. here goes.” dylan leans forward. “have you ever slept with anyone…”
”oh, uh…i…”
”hey dylan! what the hell?” emma looks over at dylan, annoyed.
”come on! i’m not…finished. have you ever slept with anyone…at this camp?” dylan looks over at emma as he finishes.
”ah, no! nope. sorry.”
“alright, abi, it’s your turn.”
”alright. okay, umm…” abi looks around at everyone. “ahh…”
”abi…oh my god, just pick someone!” kaitlyn says, clearly getting annoyed.
”okay, okay. um…” abi thinks. “ugh! i don’t know!” abi looks over at emma.
”ugh! ding ding ding. too late. my turn.” emma smiles. “ryan - truth or dare?”
”dare! gimme what you got.”
”okay ryan. i dare you to…jump in the lake.”
ryan groans. ”really emma?”
”waist deep. just for a couple seconds.”
the group cheers and follows as ryan slowly stands up and walks down to the lake.
”come on ryan! no ifs, ands, or buts!” dylan playfully shouts as the group starts to chant ryan’s name.
ryan takes a deep breath and walks into the lake, his entire body immediately shivering as soon as the water touches his skin and clothes. he stops when the water gets to his waist and turns around to the other councellors, who have all started counting down from 10.
”i hate you guys!” ryan yells while the group cheers when they get to 0. he quickly runs out of the lake and heads back to the fire, everyone else following behind and sitting down.
”your turn, ryan.” dylan says.
”alrighty. who shall i pick…?”
”well, me and jacob haven’t gotten a turn yet.” kaitlyn interrupts.
”good point.” ryan nods. “alright jacob. let’s see what you’re made of.”
jacob sits forward and smiles. “oh, dare! dare, man, come on!”
”okay…” ryan smiles over at jacob. “i dare you…to take a flying leap over that fire pit…”
jacob goes to stand up.
”naked.”
”oh, dude! fuck yes!” jason jumps up. “oh, i will jump over this thing, i don’t care.” jacob swings both of his legs over the log he was sitting on.
”yeah, i don’t think that’s a good idea.” kaitlyn looks over at ryan as he shrugs.
jacob takes off his pants as emma pulls out her phone. “no. jacob. wait. don’t do it. stop.” she says sarcastically.
”dude, i say veto. you’re gonna fuck yourself up.” kaitlyn stands up.
”what? no come on, man, i got this.”
”ryan, come on…”
”ugh, fine…veto.” ryan says, annoyed.
”you know what? fuck this game.” jacob starts to put his pants back on. “alright, someone else can go.”
”okay. fine. then i call your turn.”
”whatever.” jacob says as he sits back down.
”emma.” kaitlyn says, turning her head.
”dare.”
“emma, so you have to kiss…” kaitlyn stops for a moment. she thinks of how close abi and emma have been tonight, then smiles. “jacob…or…abigail.”
“what?” abi looks over at kaitlyn, clearly not expecting her name to be said.
”well then…” emma looks at abi.
”um, uh… sorry abigail, this is not even a dare, obviously i got this, emma’s not even-“ jacob shrugs and looks over at abi.
”yeah, i don’t know if that’s a good idea-“ abi says.
”i choose abi.”
emma moves closer to abi. “is that okay?”
”wh- well- i mean- yes…” abi looks around at everyone else. “but, emma, that’s your boyfriend-“ abi whispers.
”em? wait, what?”
emma leans in closer to abi, and a few gasps and cheers are heard from the others while the two kiss. jacob looks at both of them, not sure how to feel.
“you never told me that you were-“
”that i was into girls?” emma pulls away from a flustered abi. “i’ve only recently figured it out myself.”
”you- you could’ve said something- i-i’m not against that kind of thing- i’m fully supportive of you and-“
”jacob. we get it.” kaitlyn interrupts and laughs.
”i’m just trying to express my support, y’know- i’ve actually been thinking about it mysel- wait.” jacob suddenly looks worried. “is it because of me?”
“oh my god, what kind of a question is that?” emma looks at jacob.
”i-i’m just wondering if i’m the reason that you’re not…into guys.”
“well, if i’m going to be all sad and honest…” emma sits up. “i try to force myself to like guys because i feel like that’s what people expect from me. i wanted to like guys but, something never felt right about my feelings…and since i met abi…something felt different, felt right, and- i don’t know.” emma shrugged. “that’s all you’re getting.”
everyone stayed silent for a moment.
”that…must’ve been pretty hard for you to say.” abi broke the silence and turned towards emma. “i’ve never seen you be like that before.”
”like what?”
”like…not- annoying.” abi smiled as emma playfully pushed her.
everyone laughs as dylan claps his hands once again and sits up. “well that was pretty unexpected! okay, who’s next?”
