Chapter Text
Secondary gender: it was still relatively new for humans and as far as researchers knew only started showing up around a thousand years ago. So to say that people still had their biases as to what their children's secondary gender was would be an understatement. Every family had their own preferences and arguments about how an alpha was the best or if the world consisted of more omegas they would all be better off. So obviously cities and states stared to show their biases too and Hawkins Indiana was no different.
Jonathan sat on his bed holding some of his newest photos in front of his face. While his mother and brother thought they we're pretty Jonathan didn't, although, Jonathan didn't think most of his photos we're pretty. Jonathan put the photos on his night stand sick of looking at them and picking out all the flaws and imperfections he could see. It was a bad habit of Jonathan's: picking things apart, but he didn't know how to stop it.
Quietly Jonathan slid down his bed and pulled a blanket over his body. The clock flashed the time at him and it made Jonathan understand even more just how lonely he was. It was only 6:00pm and he was already going to bed. 'I'm such a fucking loser.' Jonathan though to himself as rolled over to his other side so that he could ignore the clock.
Hawkins definitely had a preference for secondary gender and their favorite once was alphas, in addition Hawkins absolutely hated betas. Just Jonathan's luck to be born and told he was a beta, every time he asks his mother she says she loves him no matter what. It never convinced Jonathan and it never would, there was obviously a reason why his father left them. Jonathan blamed himself whole heartedly, he was the reason his parents started having martial problems and as he grew older things just went down hill. Jonathan gripped onto his pillow tightly his vision blurry and his breath ragged.
Jonathan felt horrible because he's the reason that Will will never be able to have a either father figure or an alpha figure in his life. How could Jonathan have done that to his poor kid brother? How was he supposed to fix it? Was there even a way to fix it? Jonathan had no clue but he did wish to be able to turn back time and change things, to change his and his brother's lives for the better. That wasn't possible though, it would never be possible and Jonathan would have to live with the horrible mistakes he's made.
Taking a deep breath out Jonathan brought his hand up to his face and wiped away the ugly tears he had on his face. Jonathan didn't deserve to pity himself, after all he had done this all to himself so the best thing he could do was toughen up a d deal with it. That's what Jonathan will be stuck doing until some sort of blessing came down on him and to be honest it never would.
Jonathan absolutely loathed P.E., everyone would target him and the other betas. They were seen as nothing's and the school did nothing to stop the behavior. Actually it would seem that they encouraged it rather than disapproved of it, but their couldn't really say anything because they could still get in trouble. That didn't mean they didn't just sit there and let the bullying happen without any repercussions.
Jonathan made sure to turn his body to the side and cover his head in an attempt to protect himself. While he still got hurt horribly it did keep himself from getting a concussion. . . most of the time. When the balls stoped coming Jonathan held his stance just in case the other team was baiting him but when a loud whistle sounded Jonathan relaxed a little. Everyone was running out over to the dressing room so that they could change before next period.
Jonathan didn't make a rush to get to the lockers: he would just be bullied even more so why would he rush? The coach gave Jonathan and the rest of the betas a dirty look as the walked past him into the hall. Jonathan made sure to keep his head low and avoid the coach's look. It was just easier to pretend that no one gave him those looks and that they just didn't see him: both still carved a deep hole inside Jonathan's heart.
Laughter and talking echoed out into the hall and Jonathan had to remind himself to calm down before he made his way over to the alpha and beta lockers. They separated the omegas for legal reasons, every school was required to do it or else they'd be shut down. Jonathan thought it would have been nice to have a locker room without alphas in it.
The smell was strong today, overly strong. Jonathan also felt like it was getting warm, it was a locker room full of rowdy alphas though. Jonathan left his thoughts and focused and getting his clothes and changing. Jonathan didn't do much in gym other than getting a wave of balls thrown at him so he didn't see a point of getting in the showers. Or maybe he was just scared to, after all the alphas were absolutely ruthless.
So Jonathan quickly changed making sure he didn't waste any of his limited time. Once Jonathan was fully
dressed he grabbed his bag and briskly walked out of the locker rooms. The hallway was filled with a few other betas but Jonathan didn't bother to talk to them, he didn't bother to talk to anyone at school.
Keeping his head down, Jonathan made his way down the hall and out of the gym. Jonathan felt hot still and a small film of sweat stuck to him. It didn't make sense to Jonathan; he hadn't done anything but stand there so why was he so sweaty? Jonathan decided to just wipe away the sweat and hoped it was just because of the hot locker room and the school being hot too.
The loud bell rang out and the classroom doors opened and students started to flood the halls. Jonathan tried to keep out of the way of most people but it was kind of hard. People would purposely shove him and bump into him making it hard for Jonathan to even make it down the hallway let alone to his next class.
The crowd finally died down and only a few people were still in the halls. Jonathan walked fast trying to make it to his next class on time but the bell rang before he could even turn the corner. 'What a shity day.' Jonathan thought to himself as he forced himself to walk faster. Jonathan's mind was running wild as he hoped to make it to class without another problem. It seemed luck was not on Jonathan's side today when he bumped into one of the worst people he could have bumped into.
"Well well well, what do we have here?" Tommy H. asked as he grinned at Jonathan. Jonathan frowned and took a step back needing the space from Tommy. There was tension in the air as Tommy stared at Jonathan and neither spoke a word. Jonathan didn't dare move a muscle as he tried to figure out what was going on inside Tommy's head. Suddenly Tommy took a step closer his face morphing into an expression Jonathan had never seen on his face.
"What do you want?" Jonathan spat out finally breaking the silence but most definitely not the tension. Tommy smiled as he took on of Jonathan's hands and brought it up to his nose. Tommy took a deep breath in before he finally spoke.
"I thought you we're a beta Jonathan." Tommy said as he let Jonathan steal his hand back. Jonathan looked at Tommy with an utterly confused look on his face as his brain processed what he had just said.
"I am?" Jonathan said but it came out more like a question. Jonathan was trying to figure out what was going on and why Tommy was being weird rather than a duche bag.
"Hah! Then why are you walking around school in heat?" Tommy asked as he got close to Jonathan's face. Jonathan took a step back needing the space from Tommy. Jonathan was confused, while that would explain why he felt so hot and was sweaty it didn't make sense. Jonathan had always been a beta and there was no way he could be an omega just all of the sudden.
"I- what do you mean?" Jonathan stuttered out as his brain bounced back in forth trying to figure out what he should be believing. Tommy took another step forward and cupped Jonathan's face and dipped his head down to get close to Jonathan's. Jonathan shook Tommy off and gave himself space an angry look plastered on his face: just because Tommy thought he was an omega he was going to kiss him? The Tommy H. who participated in the brutal bullying that he has had to go through for his whole life? Jonathan was pissed to say the least.
"Fuck off Tommy! Jonathan spat out as he walked past Tommy now even more late to class than he should have been. While Jonathan was mostly pissed there was a small corner of his brain that was starting to put some pieces of things together. All that was at the bottom of Jonathan's thoughts as he worried about trying to making it class.
