Work Text:
Chrissy doesn’t ask Eddie to hand him his jacket and vest — she never has to, really. Ever the gentleman, at the slight sign of a chill, he has it around her shoulders before she can protest. So, it’s safe to say she’s worn it many, many times. Never before had she noticed the slightly crooked and faded red stitching that said Chrissy.
That is, until they were sitting in his trailer, holding hands and watching a movie and she shivers. The trailer gets cold sometimes, something about a draft they can’t seem to fix. Eddie grins at her, untangling his fingers from hers to shed his jacket and vest. Chrissy rolls her eyes playfully, but takes it and puts it on. It swallows her, it’s almost comical.
“You’re such a sap, Munson.” She teases, poking him in the side. He snorts and leans to press a kiss to her cheek, nuzzling where he lips touched.
“So what, Cunningham?” He replies, grabbing her hand again and bumping his shoulder against hers. The movement jostles her small frame and she giggles, the coat slipping off her left shoulder. The vest falls open then, revealing the inside. She furrows her brows at the flash of red, and Eddie freezes next to her.
“Uh-“ He begins.
“Is that my name?” She asks, reaching to rub her fingertips across the letters.
“Well, yes, it is, but, uh,” He stammers, and she looks up at him with a raised brow.
“It’s, uhm, it’s new?” He tries, but the red thread was fading to pink which meant it was clearly older then their relationship.
“Eddie,” Chrissy murmurs and he flinches, embarrassment clear on his face.
“I’m sorry, it’s been there a few years.” He mutters. “It’s probably as old as the vest, really. I got high one night, couldn’t stop thinking about ya, and it just - it happened.”
Silence hangs between them and he’s looking at her like he’s scared she’s going to yell, going to be upset. Instead, she just grins.
“You’re adorable, Eddie Munson.” She says, giggling as she leans to kiss his cheek. Eddie is still frozen for a moment, before he grabs her face, smiles that crooked grin she loves so much and kisses her properly.
Once Chrissy pulls away, she’s a little breathless, her cheeks flushed and her eyes half lidded.
“You’re such a freak, princess, you know that?” He teases, kissing her nose and the apple of her cheek. She just grins, closes her eyes and leans against him.
—
A few weeks later, they’re back in the same place, and Chrissy is wearing her cheer sweater. Eddie seems to notice, glances at her almost disappointed that he won’t be able to offer her his jacket, but he doesn’t say anything. He won’t be disappointed once he sees why she had worn it.
She’s horrible at sowing, so she had employed the help of Nancy Wheeler who looked at her with wide eyes when she asked if she could help her stitch into the cotton of her jacket. She had helped though, did a fabulous job of teaching Chrissy how to thread a needle and gotten her a few pieces of fabric to practice on. Nancy offered to do it for her, but she wanted to do it — just like Eddie had done his own stitching into his vest.
So here Chrissy Cunningham sits, grinning to herself as she curls up to her boyfriend and nuzzles against his neck.
“What’s gotten into you, Cunningham? You look like the cat who ate the canary.” He teases, kissing into her strawberry blonde locks. She giggles and sits up, biting down on her lip as she looks at him.
“I did something.” She says, and Eddie furrows his brows.
“That’s incredibly vague, sunshine, and sounds oddly concerning.”
Chrissy rolls her eyes and huffs. She unzips her jacket, tugging the left side so it reveals what’s stitched underneath her own name.
Eddie, in red.
He gasps, eyes widening. He reaches out, brushes his fingers across the letters. She waits for him to speak, resisting the urge to bounce her leg.
“God, Chrissy,” He says, voice cracking. He’s smiling and his big charcoal eyes are sparkling. “And I’m the sap?”
She laughs then, throws herself onto him and presses her lips all over his face. He wraps his arms around her instinctively, grinning against her kisses.
“We’re both saps, handsome. That’s why it works.”
And he kisses her in agreement, humming against her lips as he pushes her onto the couch.
Yeah, two big ole saps.
