“kohane!”
kohane’s head turned toward the voice calling her name. as her girlfriend’s face slowly morphed into a smile, an ran to the bench where kohane sat.
“hi, cupcake,” an murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of kohane’s head. kohane giggled and covered her face, muttering something like “don’t call me that” as her face acquired a slight pink tint.
kohane scooted over to make room for an, but not before they shared a short and sweet kiss.
“what’re you doing out here? it’s, like… late,” an asked, her golden eyes blinking with concern.
“oh! i was looking at the stars!” kohane’s eyes brightened like she had just discovered diamonds.
an looked up to the sky, taking in the vastness of light above. she had to admit, the stars were pretty. an couldn’t blame kohane for wanting to bask in this.
still, kohane looked a lot more interested, and her eyes darted around as if she was looking at - or for - specific stars or constellations.
“huh,” an’s gaze drifted downward in thought, “i didn’t know you were into that stuff.”
“w-well, i don’t really know that much about it, some girls at my school talk about it and… i think it’s kinda interesting, so sometimes i ask them about it, and- i’m rambling, sorry,” kohane’s voice drifted off as her face burned red.
an put her arm around kohane’s shoulders to squeeze her close.
“what do you know? about stars and stuff?” an invited, and it was like a dam had opened.
“oh! well, you probably know the big dipper, it’s right there- if you go from the spoon end, you can see the rest of ursa major! in latin that means ‘large bear’ or something… to me it doesn’t really look like a bear, but you can kinda see its legs and head and stuff? and over there is ursa minor, the little bear, and- ooh! on the very end of it, that last star is polaris, the north star!”
kohane was bouncing as she spoke; she pointed at the sky and kept looking from the stars to an’s face, watching as her girlfriend’s eyes darted to follow kohane’s outstretched hand.
an jolted when kohane spoke up after a moment of silence.
“there! there it is! that one’s orion, like the guy from mythology? you can find it pretty easy if you look for his belt. see that line of three stars in the middle? there’s orion’s belt!”
an’s look of wide-eyed admiration slowly turned into a smile as she turned to look at kohane.
“why didn’t you tell me you knew about this stuff?” an asked, squeezing kohane’s shoulders.
“it never came up?” kohane offered, “and i didn’t think you’d be interested.”
an scoffed in mock offense. “of course i’d be interested! my amazing, adorable, beautiful girlfriend likes it, so i do too!”
kohane’s face felt hot enough that she thought she’d burn. “a-an…”
“what? it’s true!” an countered, giving kohane a peck on the cheek.
they sat like that for a moment, enjoying the silence, the stars, the cool night air around them, just being in each other’s presence.
“yknow,” an started, sighing contently, “there’s all those cool stars up there, but i think i’ve got the brightest one riiight here with me!” she laughed, wrapping her arms around kohane and pulling her into a hug.
“c-come on, an…” kohane complained through her giggles.
“what, am i not allowed to be corny with my darling sweetie pie of a girlfriend?” an changed her grip on the other’s body, spinning and pulling kohane down so her back was against an’s chest. kohane squeaked at the sudden movement, but didn’t resist.
“sorry, sorry, you’re just cute when you’re embarrassed,” an admitted, resting her chin on kohane’s shoulder.
“i really love you, y’know?” an whispered into kohane’s ear like a secret only the two of them could know.
“i know,” kohane whispered back, “i love you too.”
