Chapter 1: Prologue: A Fateful Halloween

Chapter Text

On a cold Halloween afternoon, Wormtail just transformed back into a human in the middle of Knockturn Alley. On the other side of the street, the corpse of a blonde Muggle is visible. Peter felt that absolutely nobody could be here watching him. He thought he found the information his Dark Lord is looking for since he heard of a prophecy. “Voldemort, I found something that may be of interest.”

“Peter, what is so important as to summon me?” The Dark Lord’s cold voice is behind him. Voldemort had apparated with seconds of Peter saying the Dark Lord’s name.

“I think they’re hiding at 4 Privet Drive.” Peter Pettigrew told Voldemort the location of what he thought was James and Lily’s address. Voldemort seems interested.

“I will take the pleasure of murdering that Mudblood and her family myself.” Voldemort replied before apparating away.

--
Voldemort apparated to a Muggle playground a short walk from Privet Drive. Around him, there are some muggle kids, alongside their parents. One of the dressed-up kids he sees is a boy wearing a brown fedora and a leather jacket. “Happy Halloween.” The kid greets him. Voldemort decides to ignore the kid, and walks outside the park to a calm quiet neighborhood that won’t be quiet for long.

Within minutes, Voldemort finds 4 Privet Drive. It’s a beige two-story house that is distinguishable from the other houses on the block due to the lack of bright colored lights. Once Voldemort walks inside the house, The Dark Lord notices a peculiar photograph on the wall. This photograph of Lily and some other girl hanging on the hallway is not moving. On the couch, someone he thought was James is watching Muggle TV.

“James, I see you’ve been fatting up since I last saw you, blood traitor of wizardkind!” Voldemort finds him.

“This must be a mistake. There’s no such thing as mag-” This is clearly an impostor. James is a worthy opponent, not some random overweight muggle. Voldemort raises his wand, and performs a nonverbal Killing Curse. The useless Muggle falls to the floor, dropping a can of Tango soda he was holding. A woman that must be Lily’s sister from the photograph on the wall comes by, holding a baby.

“VERNON!” Lily’s sister screams, looking pale. Now the baby boy is crying and terrified. Like he should be.

Voldemort reads the woman’s mind, and finds out that her name is Petunia, and the kid she’s holding is her 15-month-old son Dudley. And that she wants him to be safe.

“Spare Dudley, please.” Petunia begged for mercy. But Voldemort wasn’t in the mood to show mercy to Muggles.

“That Mudblood sister of yours abandoned you and your son to your fate.” Voldemort taunts Petunia.

“She did not.” Petunia replied, looking defiant.

“Avada Kedavra!” Seeing the life leave Petunia Evans’s eyes was so satisfying, the look of fear on her face forever preserved. Now he can use this turn of events to draw James and Lily out of hiding to her sister’s funeral.

“Mummy!” baby Dudley speaks his first words. Now the child is defenseless. It’s a shame such pathetic Muggles can’t put up a fight at all.

He didn’t even need to point his wand when he said “Avada Kedavra.” There’s a blinding light, and then darkness.

--
The moment Auror Sirius Black heard of the use of magic around muggles, he apparated to a quiet Muggle area known as Little Whinging. With nobody able to see him, Sirius transformed into a large black dog, and began walking around the neighborhood. With a heightened sense of smell as a dog, Padfoot could smell burnt wood from far away. Padfoot barked, and knew that he found the house. Walking towards the ruined house, Sirius found that Alastor Moody had arrived before him. As had Headmaster Dumbledore and Kingsley Shacklebolt. Sirius reverted to human form, and couldn’t believe his eyes.

Beneath the rubble of the ruined house, there are two Muggle corpses, and a living Muggle toddler that has a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead. “A Muggle baby? Defeating You-Know-Who? Tell me you’re joking, Albus!” Sirius asked Dumbledore.

“Sirius, I have to go tell James and Lily this news.” Dumbledore said before apparating away. Sirius felt emotions running through him. Glad that the war is over. Prongs would probably spoil Dudley and Harry. He’d definitely be a good parent. And Sirius would be glad to be a good godfather to them.
