Work Text:
Neptune knew that the Agency was after him. He wasn’t stupid; he knew what happened to agents who tried to quit. But when Nineteen offered to help him get his son and run away together, he was just in love enough to believe him.

He arrived at their meeting spot early and spent far too long debating whether Nineteen would actually show. But he did. Of course he did. He said he would, so he did.
Nineteen was armed but not trying to hide it. It was the kind of thing that maybe should have set off some internal alarm bells, but it didn’t. That was just the kind of business they were in. He would have been more concerned if Nineteen wasn’t carrying a gun.
“Thank you,” he said when Nineteen got closer. He couldn’t express how grateful he was; the words simply didn’t exist. “I know you’re risking everything to help me.”
Never in his life had Neptune been more thankful for anything than he was for Nineteen at that moment. Until now, he wasn’t certain his partner would truly be able to betray the Agency. He couldn’t contain the joy he felt knowing that Nineteen chose him over all of that.
He pulled Nineteen into a kiss. Everything he couldn’t say in words, he tried to say in that kiss. How thankful he felt, how much he loved him, and how hopeful he was that together they could actually manage to live a happy normal life, away from the Agency.
Eventually, he broke the kiss. “I love you so much.” It was the only thing there was to say.
He watched as his partner slowly withdrew his firearm, and the realization hit him.
It had all been a lie. Nineteen had no intentions of helping him get away from the Agency or get his son back. He wasn’t here to run away with Neptune. He was here to kill him.
“They sent you,” he said. It wasn’t a question because they both knew the answer. He didn’t want to believe it. After everything they had shared over the past year, every soft touch and whispered feeling, all of it meant nothing now. Now, there was nothing left to do but stand there and get assassinated by who he thought was the love of his life.
“I’m sorry,” Nineteen told him, as if Nineteen’s words still meant anything anymore.
The last thing Neptune saw before everything went black was the man he loved pointing a gun at his forehead.
