Work Text:

Liam rests in the grass, looking up at the sky. He hums a song he heard on the radio, and lets himself fully relax. It’s like he can hear wind chimes, clicking and dancing as they are pulled back and forth by the breeze. His heart aches to truly hear them again. He’s left wanting for something he won’t get anytime soon.

Liam can hear footsteps approaching him, but he can’t find it in himself to prop himself up on his elbows and greet whoever’s there. He can’t bring himself to break his staring contest with the small bunch of clouds in the sky. So he doesn’t. He’s silent and makes no move to acknowledge his guest.

Liam wonders if he’d come off as rude and moves to apologize before Amelia slides down with him and locks her hands together on her chest. Liam tilts his head to look at her. She does the same. Their eyes meet with a gentle smile, and then they’re both looking away again.

Amelia understands. She, too, has sat in the grass for hours upon end wondering why they were in this situation. And with no Airy to break the silence anymore, she finds herself doing it more often. She wonders idly why Airy isn’t back yet. Another topic for another day, perhaps.

Amelia misses her family. Her friends and her yoga students. She misses the people in her life, even ones she didn’t particularly cherish. She supposes everyone else misses theirs, too. It was only natural. She detaches her left hand off her right and splays it out beside Liam. An invitation to be closer.

Amelia lets her eyes flutter shut when Liam rests his hand against her’s and then locks their fingers together silently. It’s been a long day of nothing. She wants to say she’ll forget this when she goes back home. Amelia doesn’t consider herself a liar, though. So she admits to her own self that she will not, in fact, forget this. Nor does she want to.

The two of them lay together, at peace. Nothing is warmer than a friend’s presence, even when the world is on fire around you.
