Izuku shifted in his bed and slowly opened his eyes but was met with darkness to his surprise. He turned over so that his back was now facing the wall and glanced at the All Might themed alarm clock. The bright red numbers showed 00:37, it had only been a few hours since he had lied down. Why did he wake up now? Izuku clutched his stomach, he didn’t feel good. Or was it that gut instinct again? He got up properly and stood up, his small feet touching the slightly colder ground. His mom had told him to not ignore that feeling whenever it rose.
He walked to the door and opened it quietly, peeking out. Nobody was in the hallway, but someone was definitely downstairs. Two voices so two people were downstairs. Who was it? Izuku tip toed out and left the door to his room open. He passed by the mirror his mom had put last week, he caught a glance of his reflection and was shocked. His hair was all over the place! Not that he could see it entirely, he was only four after all, but he would grow to become just like All Might! Even without a quirk, he would show the world that he didn’t need one to become a hero!
Izuku smiled and continued walking towards the stairs but froze near the steps. The voices were now of course louder and clearer. The dim light of the kitchen shone into the dark hallway downstairs. They were fighting, but who was his mom fighting with? It didn’t make sense... Kacchan and Mitsuki-baachan had already left, did they forget something? But why would they come this late? And why would Mitsuki-baachan fight with mom? And if they really came back, where is Kacchan? Izuku was wondering until his train of thoughts was cut off by more arguing.
“I told you, I don’t care! The boy is quirkless and I'm not planning on staying! I've had enough! I can’t stand by and watch as my quirkless son is cast away by this god forsaken society!” a rough voice exclaimed and Izuku was pretty sure it sounded somehow familiar. What was important was that they were talking about him, if they mentioned that he is quirkless then that meant it was someone very important. He had been told that he wasn’t allowed to tell people he was quirkless. Izuku clutched the railing beside him tightly, a frown and pout beginning to form on his face.
“How can you say that?! He's your own son! You can’t just abandon him! It doesn’t matter what has happened in the past or what society thinks! If you abandon him then you’re just as bad as them if not worse! Do you really want Izuku to grow up knowing that his hypocrite father abandoned him because he was quirkless?! You were at least lucky enough to get a quirk! Shouldn't you then be by your sons' side?! It's now he’ll be needing you the most, Hisashi!” Inkos desperate voice rang out, it sounded like she’d been crying. It made Izuku worried. He didn’t like it when his mom cried.
It really wasn’t that hard to understand, even for a four-year-old. In fact, he understood everything, it was as if all the bits of a puzzle were finally falling into place and it all made sense. Of course it was his dad. The one who never even showed up, the one that he hasn’t seen since Christmas. The dad he once found awesome, but the image was now shattered as he heard he wanted to leave him and his mom. Who would do that? But there was one thing Izuku didn’t get, it was that part about his dads’ quirk. “You were lucky enough to get a quirk.” his mom had said but what did she mean? Izukus previous thoughts were cleared but new, unanswered, questions rose instead. He tried crouching as far as he could to see them but only succeeded in seeing their legs.
There was a long pause before his dad sighed. “You’re right. I'm a hypocrite and he needs me now... I know how hard it is so I should be with him and support him. He needs someone other than you in his life, no offense...” he chuckled lightly and Inko couldn’t stop herself from letting out a small and soft laugh.
“I’m so happy...” she whispered.
“Why?” he asked her, it’s not like he didn’t know, he just wanted to hear it and Izuku wanted to hear it as well.
“It’s just... Izuku’s lucky to have you as his father. I'm happy it turned out like this. I'm sure Izuku will be happy to know you’ll be staying with us.” shuffling was heard and the light was turned off, Izuku took it as a sign to retreat back to his room as to not get caught. He hadn’t gotten all the answers to his questions and parts of him wanted to wait for them to find him and ask them about all of his thoughts. But other parts of him felt content with what he had experienced. After all, his dad would be there for him, that’s what he said and Izuku trusted his dad. As much as he understood how to trust that is. His dad said he’d stay so he must mean it. Like an unsaid promise. Izuku liked promises.
He grabbed the handle to his open door and closed it carefully behind him as to not make a noise. He climbed in his bed and pulled the covers over his body, eyes slowly closing and dozing off with a smile on his face.
