Detective Tsukasa is on the case!

Summary:

While preparing a play about a detective cracking a case, Tsukasa ends up cracking a case of his own.

Notes:

I love these two weirdos so much <3 So this story alternates with the ‘real’ world and a play going through loosely the same plot. When you see a ✩ that means it’s in the ‘real’ world, and 🔍 means it’s part of the play. But first, some information about the play;

Tsukasa - Tatsuya Trenwallen, protagonist
Rui - Ruiairi Kolenso, antagonist
Emu - Emmy-Lou Owens, background character
Nene - Nichelle Owens or Police Chief Owens, supporting character

I hope you enjoy reading!

Chapter 1: The first letter arrives

Chapter Text

Tsukasa walked home, tiredly. It had been a long day, but he felt proud. He had finalized the designs of the costumes for their next play with Rui. Rui was the one who had thought it all up, so it had only made sense to check with him!

---  earlier that day ✩

“These costumes are even better than I envisioned! You truly are talented, Tsukasa.” Rui smiled, eyes roving over the papers.

“Ah,” Tsukasa smiled sheepishly before striking a pose. “Well of course they are! It was I who designed them after all!”

Rui laughed. “Fufu~  It sure feels good when your plan is going exactly how it’s supposed to…but there’s really no telling how it will end.”

“Eh, but didn’t you finish writing it?” Tsukasa said, confused. “How do you not know how it will end?”

Rui stared for a second, then smiled again. “Did Emu and Nene get the script I sent?” He asked, dodging the question.

“Yeah, Nene was pretty happy with her part.” Tsukasa recalled.

“Well, she had asked me to make her character of higher authority than yours. I made her wish come true.” Rui winked.

“Ah, well when I have a wish, I’ll be sure to visit my local fairy godirector!”

“Consider all your wishes granted, my star.”

---  present time ✩

Does Rui want to end Tsukasa? You truly are talented, Tsukasa. He knows that, but it’s different when Rui says it! That wink too! He’ll die someday, and he won’t even get to tell the person at fault his feelings! He sighed. A star must push through!

He had made it home now, and reached into the mailbox. Probably the normal ads and things. I’ll sort through them after dinner, He thought.

Tsukasa opened the door and yelled, “SAKI! I’M HOME!” He could hear feet thundering down the stairs as he took off his shoes.

“ONII CHAN!!!” Saki launched herself at her brother. She knocked him over and they ended in a heap on the floor.

“I take it you had a good day?” Tsukasa said, laughing.

“You bet!” Saki helped her brother up. “We released our new song! Then we went to this new cafe to celebrate, and Shiho-chan got whipped cream on her nose! I even got a picture! She got angry when I told her, but it just made her look cuter!”

“I can picture Shiho-san getting angry! Is that the song you had me listen to a few days ago?”

“Mhm! It sounds a bit different since we added a few things.”

“I’ll have to listen to it again then!”

--- after dinner ✩

Tsukasa shuffled through the mail. It was as he expected, but he got a lot of coupons. He’d have to save those for later. He did find one letter addressed to himself, but it had no return address. He opened it slowly, doing his best to not tear the envelope.

My dearest Tsukasa,

I sometimes find it hard to look at you directly, but I cannot help but gaze at your face. Your eyes are like two sunsets of incomparable beauty, second only to the beautiful kindness in your heart. The mere thought of you makes this poor boy swoon.

Forever yours,

Your admirer

Was this…a love letter?

--- Tatsuya Trenwallen and the Violet Wings Caper 🔍

“So the thief leaves a letter at every crime scene?” Detective Trenwallen asked.

Chief Owens nodded as she handed Trenwallen the letters. “After the thief got away for the seventh time, I knew we had to call you. My wife is losing visitors at her museum.”

“Don’t worry, you can leave it to me!” Trenwallen exclaimed as he read through the letters. “So he calls himself Violet Wings…”

--- with Saki ✩

“Onii-chan! Do you know who sent this?” Saki said with urgency. She had read the letter with the excitement of someone winning millions.

“Er, no.” Tsukasa fiddled with his hands. “What am I supposed to do with this if I don’t know who it is?”

Saki suddenly got up and walked to her manga shelf. “Give me a sec, it should be around here somewhere…” She pulled out a shoujo manga that was called ‘ Letters from Lee’ , “AHA!” She sat criss cross on the floor with her brother again with stars in her eyes.

“Ah! That’s the manga you recently got the whole set for!” Tsukasa said.

“Yes! I love it so much! But my rambles are for another time,” Saki’s expression changed to a serious one. “The main character in this story, Sayaka, got a mysterious love letter through the mail, just like you! She opened it late at night, and when she read it her heart went doki-doki and-”

“I’m not a heroine from a shoujo manga!” Tsukasa huffed.

“Oh really? I saw your heart doki-doki when you read the letter out loud to me,” Saki smiled. “Anyways, Sayaka’s letter was also anonymous!”

At this point Tsukasa had thrown his pride out the window. “How did she figure out who the sender was?”

“Well, Lee, the one who sent the letter, kept on sending them every other week. He made the mistake of revealing information only a person who was both in her math class and theater class would know. Then she deduced it could be none other than Lee, the boy she had been secretly harboring feelings for!”

Tsukasa crossed his arms and closed his eyes, deep in thought. “So, I just have to wait until I get another letter?”

“Yes, but fret not my dear brother! I will be happy to help investigate with you!” Saki squealed. “OMG! I need to tell all my friends about this! It’s like real life shoujo manga!” Saki picked up her sparkly pink phone and began typing furiously.

--- At the crime scene 🔍

Detective Trenwallen clicked his pen repeatedly, deep in thought. “This reminds me of a prior case I had…”

“Why, pray tell, detective.” Ruairi Kolenso, his assistant assigned to him by Chief Owens, had joined him on his visit to the museum.

“It’s a bit of a long story. Nonetheless, I’d be delighted to tell you after this case.”

“I will wait with good grace, if that’s the case.” Kolenso smiled with a cat-like grin, crouching over to inspect the broken glass that littered the floor.

“Hmm, these seem like they were broken with a military-grade weapon, the edges of these pieces don’t have strange bumps jutting out.” Trenwallen duduced.

Kolenso seemed indifferent to his conclusion, his face indecipherable.
