Work Text:
“Mama!” Jacob whined, Sitting in his and Kaitlyn’s shared bedroom on the floor with a couple of toys. Among them was a stuffed teddy bear who was clearly worn out, The fur was matted and the eye had been falling out until now, Where it lay next to the little’s hand. “Mama, Buttons broken!” He called out, Tears brimming to his eyes at the thought of his best friend was broken and hurt.
Kaitlyn appeared in the doorway seconds later, Rightfully worried at the boy’s whining and calling out but not understanding until now. “What’s wrong, Pup?” She crouched to where he sat, Taking in the damage as Jacob’s lip just trembled as if afraid that if he were to talk he’d burst into tears. Instead, He pointed to eye on the ground then the bear, Blinking back tears enough lean into Kaitlyn’s side in an attempt to get a hug from the caregiver.
“Oh, Poor thing! Must be so hard to see!” She gasp dramatically, Letting Jacob laugh at her reactions before scooping the bear up along with the button eye that came from it. “Let’s go fix them yeah? Mama will be quick i promise.” Kaitlyn looked at Jacob who hadn’t moved, Just sat and looked up at her with big shiny eyes. “I can do it in here if that’s what you want,“ She said, Chuckling when he shook his head up and down eagerly. “I’ll be right back!” Kaitlyn chirped, Dashing out into the hallway and into the kitchen to dig through cabinets.
While Kaitlyn went to look, Jacob stood, Head scanning one area to the next in order to find something to do. There was a kitchen playset.. That didn’t seem anymore interesting than the other cooking sets around his room. Out of the corner of his eye Jacob eyed his bookcase, Toddling over and flopping down in front of it with his fingers grazing each and every spine until he finally found one he wanted. The book was almost always the same but it’s not like it mattered when he was just passing time.
It took a little bit but by the time Kaitlyn returned with the sewing kit Jacob had finished reading the book, It wasn’t that long to begin with— About 20 pages overall for a kids book with mostly pictures. “Come here pup, You can help me fix Mr Buttons!” She waved him over with a slight smile, Holding up the stuffed bear when its name was brought up. “Yeah okay!” Jacob nodded eagerly, Leaving the book where it lay to sit next to Kaitlyn on the ground next to her sewing kit.
“Alright little love, We’re gonna have to be really, really careful so we don’t hurt him.” Kaitlyn spoke cheerfully, Almost too cheerfully if you asked Jacob, who’s best friend was lying with stuffing peeking out of the hole his broken eye left behind. “Be super careful! Buttons is sens’tive and he’s gonna be mad if you hurt’em!” Jacob warned, Oblivious to Kaitlyn’s chuckle until she pressed a kiss to his temple. “I’ll be extra careful, I swear on my heart.” She made a show of dragging an ‘X’ across her heart with her pointer finger.
The ‘procedure’, as Jacob had dubbed it, had been going well throughout. Kaitlyn slowly worked on the plushie’s eye, Occasionally showing Jacob how to sew until the other got bored and started to babble nonsense. By the time Kaitlyn had finished it was well past Jacob’s bedtime, Despite mentally scolding herself for her forgetfulness she let herself slide and decided it was okay.
“It’s bed time pup.” Kaitlyn nudged Jacob softly, Resulting in a whine but a slow nod. He was tired and Mr Buttons seemed to be in good condition now, Everything was all better. “otay mama..” The little got up, Blinking slowly as he made the movements to get ready for bed. Kaitlyn followed suit behind him like a mother hen; Letting him do things when he wanted to be independent until he asked for help and she took over.
With everything ready for bed Kaitlyn moved to stand over her sewing kit, Thinking for a moment or so before nodding in triumph, Seemingly making a decision no one else but her decided on. Jacob watched with slight confusion, Having already crawled into bed and was cuddling with an arm pillow Kaitlyn always used. “Whatcha doin’?” He asked, Leaning forward until Kaitlyn turned to face him and he back tracked his steps. “I, My beloved pup, are going to give you a surprise, But you need to be asleep for it to come!”
The words brought light to Jacob’s eyes, Childish glee shone brightly as he buried himself under the covers and made a gesture for the nightstand like to go off. As she made her way to flick the switch, Kaitlyn pressed another kiss to Jacob’s head before speaking. “Goodnight, Sweetheart!” She smiled, Pulling away to let Jacob peck her cheek before finally standing up straight. “I’ll be in the living room okay? Shout if you need me!” Kaitlyn told him with the ever growing smile, Picking up the sew materials and Mr Buttons before leaving the bedroom.
Kaitlyn sat on the couch quietly, Phone humming out some playlist Dylan made her as she got hard at work. To fix up Mr Buttons she decided to replace his eyes with shiny new ones, Setting the older ones on the table and sitting him up to face her. “Jacob is gonna love you!” She grinned, Hands tapping at her thighs then the table before her emotions became less overwhelming and she was able to pick up the stuffed toy again.
“Now, Let’s fix you up more, Shall we?” She said to seemingly no one, Kaitlyn carried on from there on out with a slight smile. All Kaitlyn wanted to do was make Jacob happy when he was little, She was glad this could be one of the things that would make him truly happy.
