Safest in Your Arms

Summary:

Moonbeam sinks into a feeling of contentment as they lay in Blake's arms as day shifts to night.

Notes:

This isn't what I was initially intending to write but I still really like where it went and how it turned out.
Also, this is dedicated to a very special friend of mine as sort of a late birthday present. Happy birthday Atlas and I hope you like it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The soft feeling of his hands trailing slowly over their sides made them sigh out in contentment. His warmth pressed around them and his arms holding them, keeping them so close to him, made them feel safe. His even heartbeat in their ear filled them with a sense of calm. As the waning light of sunset painted the room in its deep hues of orange and purple, they felt as if they were floating, weightless in a state of serenity. There was something about times like these that made them feel a peace they could only find with him.

Blake had come back into their life almost a year prior. Had it been a year? Part of them felt as if it had only been a few short months and part of them felt as if it had been years. As if he’d never left in the first place. Reconnecting had felt so easy and natural that it was almost no time until the two were just as inseparable as before. None of it felt rushed or forced. It was like everything just fell right back into place. And that had led them into something more.

Shifting their weight against him made his eyes flutter open and watch them with that soft gaze of his. His brow furrowed slightly in concern as he watched them settle against him again.

“Is everything alright?” He murmured, his hands stopping their motions as he watched their expression.

“Perfectly fine,” A content smile played across their lips as they replied.

“As long as you’re alright, Moonbeam,” His voice was soft as his grip on them tightened. Protective, concerned. As if their safety meant more to him than anything else in the world.

“I’m in the safest place I could be,” They smiled into his skin, “With you.”

He leaned toward them in that moment. Something about those words spurring him to disrupt the peace ever so subtly. His lips captured theirs in a long and loving kiss only moments later. At first, they chuckled in surprise but they quickly melted into the kiss and one of their hands found its way to the back of his neck. When he finally pulled away, it took them a moment to catch their breath.

“What was that for?” They asked, softness obvious in their voice as their fingers curled in his hair, idly playing with its soft strands.

“You don’t know how happy it makes me to hear those words,” He told them as a hand came up to cup their cheek, to pull their lips to his again. They easily relaxed into his touch and into the intoxicating feeling of his lips on theirs. So soft and gentle but firm.

"Do I not tell you enough?" They asked, a hint of a laugh in their tone. There was a twinge of guilt that snaked through them at the thought. An inkling of worry sparked in them that they weren't doing enough to express their feelings despite their efforts.

"That's not at all what I'm saying, my love," He stole another kiss from their lips, "You tell me and show me your love so much, probably more than I deserve."

"Then why the sudden kiss?" They asked, their lips still so close that they ghosted over his own as they spoke, "Not that I'm complaining."

"Hearing that," He paused for a moment to shift, pulling them so that more of their bodies were touching, "That I make you feel safe. It makes me so happy because being that for you is so important to me."

There was something soothing about having them pressed so close to him. He'd told them that before. The feeling of their presence, real and tangible, was something he craved and coveted. Thinking back to those conversations, his confessions of how much their touch soothed, they pulled themself further into him. Instead of the way in which legs had been twining together like roots growing entangled under the soil, they hoisted one of their legs across him. It effectively pressed them even further against him and locked them there flush to him. He hummed in approval as his hand left their cheek to travel slowly down their body. Another contented hum made its way from his lips as his fingers danced over the skin of their leg in a tantalizingly light touch. It sent pleasant shivers up their spine and his smile turned toward a smirk as his fingers ghosted over their skin once more with that same slow touch.

"Making sure you're safe is so important to me, my Moonbeam," He whispered softly in the quiet serenity of the approaching night, "I would give anything and everything to make sure you were safe. You are my world, my love. My everything."

“Blake…” His name was a swift exhale, any other words lost to the sentiment he poured out to them. Tears found their home in the corners of their eyes, a few collected there to mirror the fading colors of evening. They grasped for worlds like leaves rustling on branches just above their reach. The prose to match his own love-filled statement was lost to them. Instead, they blinked away the tears collected as they leaned in to capture his lips in a kiss. It was a kiss like the sweetest honey, full of all their love and care for him. Long and slow as their arms wrapped around his neck and their fingers twined into his hair pulling him impossibly closer and closer still. They only pulled away when their body pleaded for air.

“I love you more than every star in the night’s sky, my darling,” They murmured, finally catching hold of the right words to match his own.

“And no star could ever compare to you, my beautiful Moonbeam,” His smile was so gentle and full of love, but there was a spark of something behind it. Nothing inherently bad and nothing that made them distrustful of him. They couldn’t imagine their sweet Blake doing anything to tear apart the trust the two had built with each other. But, they could never place that spark in his eye when he spoke of his love for them. He wasn’t all soft edges and sweet soothing words. No one was just their softness, as the world made being purely soft a difficult endeavor.

“It’s getting late, my love,” He told them as he watched their expression, “You’re starting to look tired.”

They hadn’t felt the telltale heaviness of tiredness pulling at them before that moment. Or maybe they just hadn’t noticed it. A feeling of serenity and peace had lulled them into a sense of complete calm. But now, a wave of that pulling weight that often came with sleep tugged at them. Their eyes began to feel heavy as he traced random designs against their skin. He hummed lightly as they let out a deep breath and sang deeper into his embrace, practically melting against him. It was as if they were boneless and without him to hold them together, there would be nothing left but as always his embrace was comfortingly strong and kept them from falling apart.

“Do you want me in your dreams tonight, my love?” He asked, his voice soft and soothing as they tried to fight against the hold of sleep. Part of them loved this easy lull into the embrace of sleep, but part of them was still yearning to stay up longer with him.

“I’ll never say no to your presence, in dreams or reality,” They told him with a smile, their voice softer as sleep began winning their battle.

“My precious Moonbeam,” He sighed, a smile of his own tugging at his lips, “I’ll always be here for you. Even sleep can’t keep us apart.”

“Nothing between us,” They murmured back to him, the beginning of what they were trying to say stuck behind tired lips, but the proud gleam in his eyes told them enough had gotten out.

Sleep was already taking hold and pulling them under like a strong current they had no hope to fight against. Their sleep had been much easier since he came back into their life. Sometimes they wondered if it was just the soothing nature of his presence or if he was actively doing something to coax them into deeper and more restful nights. He was a dreamwalker after all.

Lost in the warm darkness of sleep, they didn’t hear the last words he murmured to them as they fell into sleep fully and completely.

"I would burn the whole world to the ground for you, my Moonbeam."

Notes:

I hope you enjoyed. I'm having a lot of funny extrapolating on Blake's character and I hope we get more of him soon.
Let me know what you think 💕
