Snuff Out the Light

Summary:

Necromancy aside and wanting to kill the Sun aside
Holy shit this song can fit Chancellor Bernard too. Missing his younger beautiful days (obvious given how much he tajes care of himself and puts on tons of makeup with that heavy eyeliner that probably hides his wrinkles) and still seeing himself as hot shit as well as not wanting to ever die and feeling like he was robbed off his life wasting his youth only obeying the monarch instead of being the one himself and having to obey him no matter how incompetent he is as well as finding the young queen (so other monarch) super annoying and overshadowing him since she is a good influence on the king, plus he mingles with poisons and potions/alchemy/chemistry with a secret lab too, feels deep disdain and oppresses the poor, is vainquished by a peasant/pauper and has a stronger taller not-so-secret acolyte ; and the monarch(s) could be the “Sun” or “light”
Holy shit Bernard and Yzma from both Kingdom of the Sun and The Emperor’s New Groove are similar
…holy fuck how’d I kill to hear Hervé Jolly sing a French version of this with adapted lyrics

Notes:

Guide to the lyrics’ meaning : knowing the Sun means God, being above all and symbolizing time passing, and the sunshine/light/sunlight being the King since being “chosen” by God, and that he is mostly mad at time and fate (thus God) and killing the King is just a way to finally follow his ruling ambitions especially since he does know he can’t kill God anyway so someone gotta pay, and the last paragraph being him imagining all the potential dark forces inside the Cave of Curses that would allow his dream come true ane ready to embrace them as mysterious and probably dangerous as they are. Also my HC Bernard had a rich Maurish merchant father who only cared about success no matter the way and a religious Spanish mother, and that both wanting power despite being a commoner, influenced by his father’s dishonesty and influenced by his mother’s way of life figured out becoming a priest would be the best way through politics

Work Text:

Chancellor Bernard : When a donkey acquires a certain age,

And the men who adored you no longer swoon,

It pays to avoid the sunlit days,

And live by the light of the kindly moon…

But the moon grows old just like us all,

And she was not spared from that crime…

So now she prays through endless days…

To take! Her revenge! On Time!

When I was a foal at my daddy’s side,

Baba, the richest merchant,

Taught me, his eldest, all the kinds

To be seen and divergent

And daddy was no dummy.

Knew this’d outrage my pious mummy!

And so he and I would both contrive

That I’d enter the Church to make me thrive

I studied well I learnt the trade

I thought my looks would never fade

If I could find that recipe

To give eternal youth to me

It was always my ambition

To make my plans fruition

As a higher politician

Before being caught by time

That old, weak, flickering sunshine robbed me of my youth

Who to blame? Who the one? Who to curse?

You know the only one to blame

Would be my enemy the sun!

Snuff out the light, claim your right

To a world of darkness

Snuff out the light, neophytes

Of a world of darkness

Ysengrin babe, turn me on,

Every wrinkle soon be gone

I could squeeze myself with glee

At the thought of what you’ll bring me

We’ll really stop at nothing,

Murder, treachery and lying,

Whatever it takes to keep my looks

You really can’t blame a mule for trying… ah!

Snuff out the light, claim your right

To a world of darkness

Snuff out the light, neophytes

Of a world of darkness

Snuff out the light, claim your right

To a world of darkness

Snuff out the light here tonight

Apparitions of eternal darkness

Spiraling in circles through the night

Creatures of beguiling blackness

No more squinting in the light

Bats and owls and coiled sea dragons

Crocodile and carrion beasts

Swirling in the growing darkness

Join us in the coming feast

Spectre wraith and apparition

Spirit demon phantom shade

Salamander serpents, dog-faced devils

Dance and watch the dying sunlight fade!
