o let the land come at you

Summary:

Sasha and Grizzop go a little further back in time than just Ancient Rome.

Prompt: Dinosaurs

Work Text:

They landed in soft grass, taller than any Sasha had seen before, and for a moment Grizzop got to see her eyes grow wide with wonder before she was on her feet, daggers out, assessing the area.

“This isn’t Rome,” she said.

Grizzop scanned the area as well. The grass was taller than he was, so he was at a disadvantage, but he could see well enough to see that there was absolutely nothing here that he recognized.

“Yeah,” he agreed. It…didn’t look like anywhere he’d been before, or heard of, which was troubling, but it didn’t look like it was one of the myriad of other worlds scattered about the Astral Plane, and it didn’t look like anyone else was there.

Grizzop thought about Eldarion, how she had stepped back and sacrificed herself—

But there would be time to tell Sasha later. For now, they had to get to safety, if there was safety to be found—or if this place was unsafe—or—

“Let’s get moving,” Sasha said, clearly having gone through the same thought process Grizzop just had. “We ought to—what the fuck ?!”

Grizzop whirled around, and then he saw it, high above them. Not a dragon—but reptilian, huge. Flying. Sasha already had her daggers out, and Grizzop drew his bow and kept it pointing at the—thing—until it had vanished over the horizon and out of sight.

“This is not Rome,” Grizzop repeated. “Sasha, I don’t—I don’t think we’re on our plane anymore!”

Sasha paused, considering.

“Fuck,” she said succinctly.

Grizzop nodded. “Fuck.” There was a moment of silence as they both absorbed this fact. “Well! We’d better get a move on if we want to find somewhere safe before dark!” Grizzop said. “I’ll try praying to Aphrodite or something in the morning. We can’t get back to our friends if we die!”

Sasha nodded, keeping her daggers out, and they headed off through the massive flora, out of prehistoric Rome, out into a brave, new, and incredibly young world.
