Work Text:

Lizzie Heart’s had a crush on both Apple White and Daring Charming for a long time. They’re the power couple of Ever After High, the epitome of royals. For a while, Lizzie had thought it was jealousy fueling her obsessive thoughts of them, but after one harrowing conversation with Kitty, she’s realized that it’s a crush.

Not that that makes it any easier. Crushing itself is hard, even as the future Queen of Hearts. She could have anyone she wants - but she would never force it. Especially not when Daring and Apple are so happy together. They don’t need her.

So Lizzie grins and bears it. No, she doesn’t think about Daring, who would ever? It’s insane that half the school is in love with him. He’s so full of himself. Even when he’s kind to her, or doesn’t treat her like she’s too much, or carries her books, or does sweet things just because he can.

And she absolutely doesn’t like Apple. She’s too prissy, even with her cute glasses, and her nerdy interests, and the way she goes out of her way to be nice to everyone, and the way she smiles at Lizzie even when Lizzie’s frowning.

But unfortunately, somewhere along the road, Cupid ended up finding out about Lizzie’s crush. Lizzie doesn’t know how, she barely even likes Cupid. But now, not only does she have to deal with he stupid crush, she has to deal with Cupid telling her how much she should tell Daring and Apple.

It’s getting to a point where it’s starting to bubble over. When Lizzie sees Apple in glass push up her glasses she wants to grab her face and kiss her. When Daring does one of those especially stupid things that would be completely avoidable if he wasn’t Daring she wants to scream a love confession.

But it’s a bad idea. Apple and Daring are happy. They don’t need her tossed into the equation. A Wonderlandian who’s a royal but is still close to a villain in theory. She’ll only complicate everything and make it all worse.

Or at least that’s what she thinks. Lizzie knows she’s right, but Cupid keeps trying to convince her that she’s wrong. Kitty, although aware of Lizzie’s feelings, doesn’t actually care enough to do more than tease Lizzie when she unqueenly stumbles upon seeing Daring and Apple kissing goodbye in the hall.

But Cupid keeps insisting that Lizzie should confess. She insists that the only thing that can go wrong is that they reject her, and at least then Lizzie would have closure. But Lizzie has closure. She knows they don’t want or need her in their relationship.

Until they pull her aside one day. Daring and Apple glance nervously between each other, and Lizzie taps her foot impatiently. Being around them is making her yearn, and she’s too queenly for that. Could she get whatever they have to say over with?

“Hey, Lizzie?” Apple asks.

“Yes?”

“We were wondering if…” Apple glances over at Daring, hoping for him to finish her sentence. He wraps an arm reassuringly around her.

“We were wondering if you’d like to date us. We understand that it might be scary, or that you might not want to, so we will accept no as an answer - although who wouldn’t want to date us?” He gives her a cocky smile, and Lizzie contains her composure as she glances between them.

“Where is this coming from?” she asks. There’s a very inquisitive and worried part of her brain that thinks that Cupid did something. She couldn’t take advantage of Apple and Daring if they were under some sort of spell.

“We’ve both had a crush on you for a while.” Apple confesses, blushing a pretty pink. “For about two months.”

Okay, so since before Cupid knew. That’s… terrifying? Lizzie can’t help but be a little bit anxious knowing that her crushes actually like her back. Still, she’s a would-be queen, so she keeps her head high and smiles.

“That’s excellent.”

“It is?” Daring asks, and Apple elbows him.

“I’ve actually liked the both of you for a while, and I would like to date you. I’m assuming we’ll go out on a date?”

“Yeah. Any preferences?”

“Surprise me. 5pm, Friday? Pick me up at my dorm?”

Apple and Daring glance between each other and nod. “That works.”

Lizzie smiles. “I’ll see you then.”
