Work Text:
"Javi"
His was not the typical case. He was a power ranger, and he had duties. Trying to ignore the two and maintaining distance was only going to raise more questions, something he didn't want to handle right now.
What he needed now was to-
"Javi!"
Great, now he was hearing her too.
A hand came upon his shoulder and rotated his chair a full 180 degrees. Though the force which was applied was too much, and the chair went another full circle until his eyes landed on a familiar pink and peach.
"Javi! I was finding you-"
"Amelia" he whispered, his heart in his throat. He didn't even know if this was real. It sure didn't feel like it. But even if it was, he didn't want to be here, because being here meant that he would have to acknowledge what just happened and… talk about it.
Talk about it like it didn't affect him.
Like it meant nothing to him.
Meant nothing that they both would go out together… But it did.
It meant a hell lot more than any weight of rejection would've had, and now he couldn't do anything about the time which had already slipped through his fingers.
"Javi to earth" someone waved their hands before him.
She waved her hands before him. Manicured nails like always, today with some glitter on the tips.
"Amelia what are you-"
"What am I doing here?" she looked at him with a raised eyebrow, "What on earth are you doing here!"
"I-"
"I told you I needed your help with something."
"With what?"
"Picking out a song!"
"What- What for?"
She looked at her desk, then, not meeting his eyes. That was something very unlike her. Before he could ask her what was wrong, she replied.
"I need- a romantic setting. Yes, that's the word. For ollie and me" she trailed off. Maybe she felt shy.
But those words registered as arrows in his heart, grinding the already small, shattered pieces to dust.
As much as he didn't want to, couldn't tolerate to, he knew he couldn't say no to her. Not when she looked at him with so much hope.
He controlled his voice, not letting the tremors in his heart reach his throat and spill out.
"Do you have any preferences?"
Amelia's features fell a little and then twisted into concentration just as fast, as if she was trying to recall something.
"What about the one you gave me last time, a few weeks ago?"
His heart stopped dead.
No
Not that
No
He couldn't
He cannot play the piece he wrote for her while she was with another guy.
His ears felt deafened, a different sort of roaring, a fear and a line.
A line he couldn't cross.
"Why?"
He jerked his face at her. Had she heard it? had he said it out loud?
"ah… it isn't what you-"
"What is happening javi?"
My heart is beating so loud I cannot ever catch what you're saying properly.
I have missed so many chances to tell you what was locked inside it that now when it's shattered, I don't even know which piece to start fixing it from.
I don't know why you are here, asking me to play, and to play that one piece which I wrote for you, for us.
But if this is the only chance god will give me to ever tell you about how I feel, even if it's too late, then I'll take it.
"Amelia, I-" He couldn't do it this way. The words won't come out; the wrong ones would mess everything up.
He picked his guitar from where he had put it down after the event had ended. He knew what he was doing was wrong. She had already said yes to Ollie, but a part of him felt that it wasn't too late still.
He strummed the familiar chords, and when he felt like he could do it, he picked up in the middle and looked at her.
"I keep craving, craving, you don't know it but it's true
Can't get my mouth to say the words they wanna say to you"
He breathed and controlled his voice.
"This is typical of love
Can't wait anymore; I won't wait
I need to tell you how I feel when I see us together forever"
And then he looked at her, actually looked at her, and spoke the words which had been haunting him, the ones which he hadn't written in the draft he had given her.
"In my dreams you're with me
We'll be everything I want us to be
And from there, who knows?
Maybe this will be the night that we kiss for the first time.
Or is that just me and my imagination?"
His voice slowed down at the end, waiting for the rejection. Maybe she would hate him for it, for ruining this beautiful song for her by attaching both their names to it. But she did something else.
"We walk, we laugh, we spend our time walking by the ocean side" Amelia sang the song, which was never completed, yet her words fit perfectly. And He? Just like always, he switched the chords and played, letting her take over.
"Our hands are gently intertwined
A feeling I just can't describe"
All this time we spent alone, thinking we cannot-" Amelia chocked off on the word, and that was the only warning he had before she hugged him, sobbing into his shoulder.
"You idiot! You've made me cry so much."
"Likewise." He whispered back, inhaling her for the first time and hugging her back.
She leaned back a little and said, "Izzy told me you won't confess so easily". Her face was streaked with tears, the tip of her nose a cute red from all the crying. But she looked beautiful as ever.
Wait what-
"Izzy- but didn't she help ollie-" Oh god, he had forgotten about what had happened here an hour back. He felt dizzy all of a sudden as panic consumed him. But Amelia was here with him, in his arms, continuing his song.
He could not understand one bit of what was happening.
Amelia looked at his face and then bit her lips as if trying to stop the smile. The effort went in vain as she again laughed and put her head on his shoulder.
"Yes Izzy planned that so you would pick your lazy ass and do something about-"
"I'm not getting-"
"Urgh!"
"So, wait a second, you and ollie aren't?"
"Noooo no not ever" she shivered as if the thought were unthinkable.
"So, you like me?" he could get the details later, and glare at his sister while he was at it. But for now, he asked the most important question.
Amelia looked at him, a sweet blush grazing her cheeks and neck.
"Hmm" she nodded, still feeling surreal after what had happened. She wouldn't have thought he reciprocated what she felt. Not if Izzy hadn't been nosey that one day. But still, it wasn't until Javi had paused, said no, with horror written all over his face, had she realized it was true.
Javi took a moment to let that sink in. He tightened his hands around her. She was here.
She was here in his arms and earlier today was a nightmare and he's still going to kill izzy for doing that to him but later… when this feeling of getting to hold her, when the privilege to be the one stopped stealing his breath away.
Amelia leaned down, their noses brushing.
And then she smiled before it broke into her beautiful laugh, full of happiness and joy.
Laughter bubbled up in him, too, the tears in his eyes long forgotten. He didn't know when they fell.
But right now, all that left him was a relieved happy laugh, full of wonder and excitement.

Later, by the lakeside, with Amelia leaning on him, he strummed the familiar chords.
"You never wrote those lyrics you sang today."
"I never wrote them till earlier today." Javi changed the chords and continued, "Just like you."
"Oh don't tell me, I chocked off at the end." Amelia laughed, playing with the small grass blades. She didn't seem to mind the stains she was getting on her peach leggings, her favorite ones, if he was correct.
"You can continue now." he said, and started strumming in the pattern.
Amelia sat straight from where she was leaning, making him look at her.
She was looking back. He already missed that sweet perfume of her and the comforting weight.
Her eyes snapped to where his guitar was.
"Like right now-?"
"Yeah"
She cleared her throat while he changed the chords again for her verse.
"We walk, we laugh, we spend our time walking by the ocean side" her voice seemed to waver in the middle, but she caught up at the end, perfecting her vocals.
"Our hands are gently intertwined, a feeling I just can't describe
And all this time we spent alone thinking we cannot belong.
To something so damn beautiful, so damn beautiful"
He took the invitation to continue with a smile.
"I keep craving, craving, you don't know it but it's true
Can't get my mouth to say the words they wanna say to you;" he looked at her, singing the rest he had added earlier.
"This is typical of love, I can't wait anymore, won't wait
I need to tell you how I feel when I see us together forever"
Amelia leaned forward, her hair tickling his fingers from where he strummed the guitar. He stopped playing.
In my dreams you're with me, we'll be everything I want us to be.
Her breath fanned on his lips. She brought a hand up, but he beat her to it, tucking her hair behind her ear as she leaned in.
And from there, who knows?
The moment her soft lips pressed against his, he felt a sort of dizziness consuming him, starting from his head. His neck felt warmer with every second as his breathing became heavier. He chased her lips as she leaned a little back and then brought her hands to hold his face between them, kissing each other like their lives depended on it.
Maybe this will be the night that we kiss for the first time.
Or is that just me and my imagination?
