"Don't scare me like that!" Ruby cried.
Eddie was as red as her name, thumb wiping his chin. "Shaddap," he mumbled, "just a cough."
"Nasty cough," she said and was just-- there. Hands on Eddie's face, thumb at the corner of his mouth. "Sure you're okay?" she asked, "need more water or anything?"
There was no way she couldn't feel him blushing, so Eddie batter her hand away. "I'm just perfect, really."
Ruby stayed close, hovering. If she was anyone else, Eddie would've bitten her head off. If she were anyone else, they never would've seen him cough up a lung and spew water, or get close enough to try and wipe his face clean.
"You should quit smoking," she said, unprompted.
Eddie groaned. "Aw, cmon!"
