Work Text:

Lilith was focused, the sound of rain pattering on her windows was enough to put her in work mode. She was sewing the final touches to a pale pink blouse that was requested by one of the lovely townsfolk. She was the only clothes designer in Laramie, Wyoming at the moment. The town was small, but the view surrounding was beautiful, fields of flowers and acres of green land thriving. It was certainly a change of scenery, especially since she moved here from her hometown in New York. In the span of one month and a half, the sound of cars and the blinding lights were replaced with the natural light of the sun and the sound of crickets at night.

The wind was rushing outside, just the way she liked it. She stepped away from her commission to stare blankly and admire the view, her hands instinctively went up to the heart shaped pendant her dad gave her as a child. Opening the pendant, was picture of all three of them, her parents and herself, smiling happily, her mom held a baby Lilith in her arms. She was a beauty, the picture did her no justice, Lilith was sure, at least that’s what her dad had told her, she can’t remember much of her mom.

She passed in a car accident with a drunk driver, killing her in an instant, while the driver got only a year in jail with a fine and was able to walk free. Lilith liked to think that she was over her mother’s death, it would be absurd to keep dwelling over it for the past 20 years, but she can’t help but listen to that tiny voice in the back of her head telling her this was why she moved here. She closed the pendant with a huff and started to stretch.

She was about to get back to work until someone barged through the door. “Lily, sorry for intruding so suddenly, but the weather is so harsh today. The wind is so strong that I might get picked up and thrown to another planet!” Lilith got up from her chair and welcomed the older lady, Mulbarry. She was a petite woman, whose hair was always tied up into a tight bun, she was one of the few locals that greeted Lilith quite nicely.

Lilith grabbed a towel that was on a chair and handed it to Mulbarry. The woman took it gratefully and started to dry anything and everything she could, “Why thank you dear, you are so kind. The weather has been acting strange lately; maybe you haven’t notice since you’ve only been here for a month or so, but it’s usually doesn’t rain until somewhere near May. Even then it’s not like this.” Mulbarry was right, Lilith didn’t know that this sort of weather was unusual, but she didn’t ponder further; sometimes the weather acts up, it happens all of the time.

“Well besides the weather, how have you been doing Mrs. Myers?” Mulbarry handed the slightly wet towel back to Lilith, the light blue somewhat darker then how it was before. Lilith put it back on the chair, not caring if the material got wet, and lead Mulbarry to her office where she can sit at a table. “Oh, the usual, Bethany was telling me about this guy she was seeing, he seemed nice, a bit narcissistic though.”

Lilith smirked unintentionally, “Oh? Does Mrs. Myers have some drama to talk about?” Mulbarry scoffed playfully as she took a seat, “Oh please. Also, call me Mulley, Mrs. Myers makes me sound like an old lady.”

“You got it, Mulley. So, uh, would you like anything to drink, I’ve got tea, coffee, lemonade-”

“Oh, an iced lemonade sounds wonderful right now, thank you.” Lilith nodded and got up to grab cups and the pitcher of freshly made lemonade out of her fridge. She set the down the glasses after filling them with ice, pouring in the lemonade. She set the pitcher on the side and sat back down, Mulbarry took the glass in her hands and took a sip, relishing in the taste.

“This is very good, thank you.” Lilith nodded her head with a smile, and they both sat in a comfortable silence, along with the sound of water droplets hitting the windows. “So, if you want, tell me about that guy Bethany was talking about?” Mulbarry was on the verge of a sigh when she responded, “I swear, that girl is going to get herself in trouble one day.” Lilith raised an eyebrow and cocked her head slightly, “What makes you say that Mrs. Myer- erm- Mulley, pardon.”

Mulbarry flashed her a smile, and took another sip at her lemonade, seeming to ponder about something. She hummed, “Well, you see, that boy seems like a trouble. Alas, she sounds so lovestruck when she talks about him, and I see that spark I had when I was younger in her eyes. She’s in love, no doubt. I just worry that this boy might not be the best for her, that’s all.” Lilith made no comment, only stared at Mulbarry while she talked, listening intently.

“My aging brain can’t recall much of what Beth said, but I am meeting him tomorrow. Maybe I’ll stop by to tell you how he is.” Lilith smiled warmly, “Of course, Mulley.” She spared a glance at the windows, “It seemed the rain has stopped-” Mulbarry picked up her glass for the last sip, raising her eyebrows as she set it down, “Ah, yes, I need to get going then. I have an order of cupcakes to go pick up from Mr. Charle’s bakery. His baked goods are delicious, I need to bring you some one day.”

Lilith shook her head, “There’s no need, Mrs. Myers.” Mulbarry scoffed as she and Lilith walked to the door, “Oh, but I insist, really. Maybe we can talk about Beth’s special boy while we are at it.” Lilith huffed out a small laugh, “Then the door’s always open for you Mrs. Myers.” Mulbarry gave her one last sweet smile, walking out of the store onto the wet pavement below her, “Of course, until next time, Lilith. Also don’t forget.”

Lilith feigned a look of slight confusion, “Yes?”

“I would like to go by Mulley. See you later Lilith,” the older lady smirked at her before turning and going on her way.
