"Do me a favor, cupcake. Go back to that big, shiny house of yours and just… forget about me."
So she tried. Caitlyn tried to forget, to pretend Vi had never happened. That she hadn't fallen for the Undercity girl. That it was simply a stranger she had been with. Not someone she'd grown to know and maybe even love. Vi wouldn't leave, however. She was undoubtedly gone, but she hadn't left. Caitlyn saw her in everything.
The color red, for example. Caitlyn saw her prison uniform pants. The jacket she stole. The blood on her fists. Her beautiful, red hair. Caitlyn was seeing red but she wasn't angry. It was emptiness that she felt. Vi would always be with her, she knew, but never again in the way they were before.
Every street corner, every hall in her big, shiny house, she saw Vi. She was reminded of the privilege she possessed, that things could be so much worse. Although nothing felt worse than missing Vi. Caitlyn found herself getting angrier than usual at the power and entitlement her parents had. She had no clue if Vi was even safe. Vi could be dead, and her parents would never know or care. None of the topsiders would.
Caitlyn was nearly relieved to be kidnapped by Jinx. To hear Vi's voice; it was like music to her ears. Sweet, sweet music. And then finally seeing her again. Under different circumstances she would have been grateful.
Even when it all came crashing down around them. They had each other. For now… Caitlyn would harbor the fear of losing Vi for a while. She never wanted to feel that again. She was still trying to forget. Though it would never work.
