Work Text:
Miles had never much thought about the golden bracelet that Mysk had gotten him a few weeks ago. It wasn’t much, just a thin ring of metal around his wrist she had gotten shortly before departing from Branshire. While he had greatly appreciated the gesture, he had merely thought that it was a sign of gratitude for not being such a shady guy as the Shiv. Or anyone in his unfortunate line of work, for that matter.
He didn’t expect what Saul told him after they got out of the altercation in the library.
“Miles, what is that on your wrist there?” he said, peering at the ring of gold that had peeked out from under his jacket’s sleeve. Mysk, across the room, looked up at her brother as he approached.
“What? Oh, Mysk gave it to me,” Miles replied, smiling fondly. “A few weeks ago, actually.” Saul raised his eyebrow and stepped into Miles’s room, smiling to himself and shooting a glance at his sister, who for some reason was frantically signaling for Saul to shut up.
“Did she now?” he asked, that seemingly natural charisma radiating off of him even as he ignored his sister, “Did she give you any other… jewelry items over your dear friendship?” The last word was strangely emphasized, and he wondered what angle Saul was playing at. “Particularly gold?”
“Saul, you better shut your mouth right now,” Mysk barked, raising to her feet and Miles couldn’t quite tell if it was more playful or if she genuinely about to attack her brother. Saul, however, was snickering.
“I mean she gave me some golden earrings, but I don’t wear earrings so I just carry them with me,” Miles replied, still confused. Saul was nearly cackling now. “What?” Miles asked, “I don’t understand. What’s so funny? Mysk what is he talking about?”
“Nothing,” Mysk snapped, more out of annoyance at Saul than at Miles. For some strange reason, her face was a sort of rose-gold orange color. She was blushing. If anything, he should be the one embarrassed for not knowing what was going on.
“Let’s just say, peasant, that you should check out a few books about Burning Circle courting rituals,” Saul said very quickly, pivoting swiftly on a heel and stepping out of the room’s door frame, practically sprinting away from his sister’s wrath.
“About what?!”
Neither Mysk nor Saul provided any more information as the two bounded down the hall rather loudly, Saul just barely out of his sister’s reach as she threatened him with various painful deaths. Maybe that was a brother-sister thing.
The true mystery, however, was what Saul meant by ‘Burning Circle courting rituals’ and if they tied into what the tiefling had asked him about his jewelry.
