Work Text:

Once upon a time, there was a world of Origins, where war raged and brothers were pitted against each other. This was a world of distrust and despair. After many years of this war, the people began to protest against the war. Hearing their people’s cries, the leaders got together and ended The Great War.

Only some of them signed peace treaties.

169 years later

Wilbur Soot sat under a tree, laying in the shade and whistling to himself. Wilbur is a Phantom, with grey tinted skin, brown hair with no vibrance, and light, translucent skin. He wore a light yellow sweater and brown jeans.

He had an empty basket next to him, waiting to be full of the goods that were about to arrive.

The phantom opened his brown eyes as he heard feet hitting the dirt. Wilbur stood up and brushed himself off, turning to face the pink rabbit that now stood next to him.

“Sup, Bunnyblade~” Wilbur said smugly, giving him a cocky smirk.

“Maybe it gets funnier the more you say it.” Technoblade said in his deadpan voice. Even so, he still chuckled at Wilbur’s statement. “Anyways, I filled your order”

He slung the brown backpack off his shoulders and placed it down in the shade so Wilbur could look at its contents.

“64 rabbit’s feet, 20 glass bottles, and assorted fruits and vegetables, all hand grown by the Spiders and Foxes.” Wilbur nodded as Techno read off the list of items in his pack.

“Fantastic!” Wilbur grabbed his basket and helped Techno transfer the items. Wilbur pulled out his small makeshift wallet and paid the rabbit. Just as Techno turned to leave, Wilbur called after him.

“Hey! Do you think you could deliver this message to the Elytran Royalty?” He handed a thick letter to Techno.

The letter was white with swirling gold designs. It was addressed to the Elytran Royalty from Queen Sally of the Phantoms in gold lettering. It had a dark blue wax seal with a sheep on it. The blue sheep was the Royal pet; he doesn’t have a name but Wilbur liked to call him Friend.

Techno took the letter and looked it over, smelling it and checking for anything suspicious. He shrugged, “Alright” then he left, calling a goodbye over his shoulder. Wilbur said goodbye as well, then turned to the river and smiled.

“Hello Niki!” He said loudly. Big bubbles floated to the surface of the water and a Merfolk stuck her head out.

“Dang it, I thought I was hidden enough!” She said in an annoyed tone. Wilbur laughed and sat down in the shade. Wilbur and Niki had always been good friends, ever since Wilbur fell into the river when he was a kid. Most of the origins in their world don’t trust the Phantoms. But when you’re a kid, the origin doesn’t matter if it means you have a new friend. The two talked for hours and soon enough, the sun was setting. Wilbur stood up and yawned.

“Well, Niki, it’s been fun but I think it’s time for me to go.” The two friends said their goodbyes and each went to their respective kingdoms. Wilbur walked through the forest, cautious to not step into other origins’ territories. He yawned again and kept walking, looking for the bright lights of the Phantom’s city.

Wilbur shut his eyes for a moment, yawning, and when he opened them again, he was in an unfamiliar part of the forest. This was worrying because he had spent his whole life in the forests belonging to the Phantoms. Wilbur went in circles, looking for the river. “If I can find the river, I could follow it to the city.”, he said under his breath.

As he searched for the river, the sky got darker and darker, day finally giving into night. Wilbur felt the odd sensation of being watched, so he instinctively quickened his pace. He skidded to a stop as the trees above him rustled. Slowly, he turned around and backed up. Wilbur put his back against a tree so nothing could jump out at him.

“What if it’s an Elytran?” he thought, panicking. Elytrans were especially scary, and didn’t particularly like Phantoms. Wilbur had no weapon on him other than his ability to go invisible. But he had been taught to never use it in front of others, and to only use it when absolutely necessary.

This seemed like a necessary time to use it.

He paused when he heard a buzz from the tree. “Ah, it’s just a Bee.” Wilbur thought to himself. Bees weren’t scary, just annoying. He stood and sighed, turning to leave.

Just as he turned away from the buzzing leaves, someone jumped into his vision.

“HEY WHERE’RE YA GOING, KING?!” The small thing shouted, startling Wilbur. He screamed and fell back, going invisible momentarily. The newcomer laughed as Wilbur tried to regain his breath on the forest’s floor.

“Sorry sorry!! Just wanted to have some fun!” the small boy came up to Wilbur and offered his hand. Wilbur hesitantly took it, allowing himself to be pulled up off the floor. For his size, this kid was surprisingly strong. Wilbur looked him over and realized he was the Bee making the noises in the tree. It would explain how he was so strong as well.

The kid then went over to where Wilbur had fallen and got onto the ground. Wilbur stood by and watched the boy put all of Wilbur’s goods that he had gotten from Technoblade back into his basket. Then he grabbed the basket’s handle and handed it to Wilbur, holding out his other hand to him.

“Name’s Tubbo!” Tubbo was holding out his hand to shake Wilbur’s, to see if he would accept his greeting. Wilbur shook hands with the Bee boy.

“Wilbur.” He was a little frustrated with Tubbo, although he knew Tubbo didn’t mean any harm. He aggressively took the basket out of Tubbo’s hand and said, “You bastard, why would you do that to someone?”

“Well, why not?” Tubbo laughed, brushing it off. Wilbur sighed, turned, and kept walking. He continued to scan through the dark trees for the river, trying to get back home. “Where ya going, Will?”

“Home. And it’s Wilbur, not Will.” He answered sharply. Despite that, Wilbur never expected this from a Bee, he was expecting the Bee to be suspicious of him and why he was in his territory.

“Oh! I can help you, king!” Tubbo said, completely ignoring Wilbur’s second comment. He flew up through the branches and leaves, leaving Wilbur in the darkness.

There it is. Wilbur was expecting him to make some sort of excuse to leave him. He sighed and turned back on his path. To his surprise, Tubbo came zooming back in front of him.

“Hold it right there! You’re going the wrong way, bro!” Tubbo laughed and shook his head. “Here, let me just-“

Tubbo scooped up Wilbur under his arms and brought him above the trees. Wilbur gasped in surprise, nearly going invisible just to get out of his arms. But he looked up and saw that they were going towards the familiar peaks of Mt Membrane, where the Phantoms resided.

“You know, I’ve never actually met a Phantom before!” Tubbo yelled over the wind.

“I thought most tribes didn’t trust Phantoms!” Wilbur shouted back. Tubbo started talking again, but Wilbur couldn’t hear him. He reached up and tapped Tubbo on the shoulder, pointing to the ground. Tubbo nodded and brought them back down to the ground.

“Sorry, I just couldn’t hear you at all!” Wilbur laughed.

“Ah, don’t sweat it, king” Tubbo said, waving his hand, “Anyways anyways, I was saying that we’ve been told not to trust other tribes, Phantoms specifically. But I never understood that bullshit. Why can’t we just get along, you know?”

Wilbur smiled softly. “Yeah… it would be nice to see that happen.”

“Not to worry! As long as I’m here, no one will treat you like shit!” Tubbo said triumphantly.

“Thanks, Tubbo. I really appreciate it, genuinely.” Wilbur said, patting Tubbo on the shoulder.

“Shall we continue?” He asked, waving his wings around. Wilbur smiled and shook his head.

“No, that’s alright, I can make it back from here. And besides, even if we’re friends, not everyone is.” Wilbur said solemnly.

Tubbo nodded with a smirk on his face, “Well, if you ever need me bossman, you know my name!”

“And you know mine.” Wilbur smiled fondly, waving as the little bee boy flew off.

Wilbur continued through the trees, the sound of a thriving market getting louder and louder. At the base of the mountain, there was a large trading center. Wilbur smiled at familiar faces as he made his way through. He reached the stairs at the base of the mountain and began to climb to the Phantom city.
