The Aftertale

Summary:

NME has been defeated and for many life is returning to normal, but for a certain navy knight assuming that the daily demonbeast attacks of the week have stopped was too much to ask for when a stranger controlling and summoning demonbeasts shows up to pick a fight with Kirby, forcing Meta Knight to expose powers he’s been keeping secret for so long and to face two old familiar faces that he never thought he’d see again.

Notes:

This takes place about three years before Oddest Way Possible.

Chapter Text

Trying to define what was a normal day in Dreamland was hard nowadays, it was a land where almost anything could happen and where practically everything did happen. From blizzards turning the tropical land into an icy wonderland to becoming a dumping ground for aliens from another world, to having a handful of invasions from enemies beyond the stars all taken care of by the one and only pink hero of Planet Popstar, typical was far from the word the navy coloured knight would use to describe the continent of Dreamland.

But ever since the defeat of Nightmare Enterprises a few months ago Meta Knight wanted to say that the daily demonbeast attack of the week was no longer a normal thing like it had been before NME’s defeat. With Nightmare finally dead and gone the company had disbanded, and even though there were some monsters left over they were about as threatening as a wild animal without a master to give them orders. Dangerous to an extent, but usually they stayed well away from Cappytown and did not bother the locals. The town had since steadily rebuilt itself becoming stronger and better than before, though the scars of the destruction the Destroya left behind hadn’t fully faded away yet.

It was strange really, not having to help Kirby fight a beast every few days or so, stranger was having the other knights, his brothers, actually still alive. Though it would still be a week or so before they finally got here, with the warp drive in the Destroya they had hijacked having taken a hit during the insane final scrimmage against NME’s headquarters. He still was having a hard time coming to terms that they were indeed alive. For so long he had assumed they were dead, that he was basically the last starwarrior, that was until he had come across a woman.

He remembered all her features clearly, dark ashen coloured skin with darker flecks and freckles, coiling curly hair like soft rolls of the darkest smoke, bright orange eyes creating a sharp contrast. She had spoken like she had known him all her life, and despite him not even knowing her name she acted like she knew everything about him and that they were old friends, and she had told him not to give up hope, that there was more starwarriors out there, a new generation that he could see with his own eyes if he just chose to stay around a little while longer.

He hadn’t believed her, not at first, and had it not been for Sword and Blade he probably wouldn’t be standing here on the castle balcony enjoying the view of the rising sun over the ocean. It was his last night staying in the castle, with NME defeated and King Dedede no longer able to order monsters he saw no reason to continue to be a servant to the king. It wasn’t like he didn’t have guards already with his considerable sided army of waddle dees. He’d certainly miss the small space he had deemed home for the last six and a half years, but he had known from the first time he had walked in through that door that this would not be his home forever.

Once the sun fully rose and he let himself enjoy it for a few precious silent moments, he descended back down the stairs and began the task of packing his things with Sword and Blade, they too were moving out to follow him, the two knaves as loyal to him as ever. Even though he had completed his goals they opted to stick by his side all the same, and he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t glad they chose to stay. After all, it was a rare occurrence that he got to keep the people he grew close to in his life.

“Alright that’s da last of these old things.”
He watched with a distracted side glance over to where Sword pulled the last of their old weapons off the wall to be put into a box. He was in the middle of folding up his blanket. Meta Knight has had the pink scratchy wool thing since his army days and it had come with him this far, it would go with him further, and with it in the box he was able to seal it up tight and tape it. “Already done packing sir?” Sword looked over, the two of them had significantly more stuff than he did.

“Sir got about das many thinks ser righ can count on one hand,” Blade pointed out with a chuckle, and really he wasn’t wrong. Really besides his candy jar, the pink blanket, a few sets of more casual clothes that he hardly ever wore and some things to repair and polish his armour. Everything else was just stored in his cape, and half the time he forgot just how much stuff he actually carried in it.

“I believe that is everything,” he nodded slightly as he picked up the box to set it near the door. Meta Knight turned back to help his two friends finish their packing when the door was suddenly kicked open with tremendous force and through the open doorway rushed Bun. The young cappy boy was in tears, a state he didn’t ever recall seeing Bun in before as he started spewing out an onslaught of words that were even harder to understand than Blade’s typical speech. Meta Knight immediately tried to console him and get him to stop and breathe, every nerve set off by the sensation that danger was just around the corner. What had happened? Why was he crying so much?

“Bun, I need you to calm down and tell me what’s going on, where is your sister and Kirby?” If his memory served him right the three of them were supposed to head out early this morning for a hike around the Whispy Woods, a weekly occurrence for them having befriended the sentient trees that made up the forest cappy boy sniffled and gasped for a moment or two longer, but pulled himself together long enough to get his words across.

“Sir Meta Knight, you have to come now! There’s a big scary monster fighting Kirby and it’s hurt him real bad!” Bun cried, and immediately Meta Knight whisked to the door, Sword and Blade jumped up to run after them.
“Lead me to them,” he demanded, and quickly all four of them bolted down the halls and corridors and out of the castle towards the Whispy Woods.
