It was a rainy night and you were home alone in your apartment. You were watching some youtube videos while sipping on some milk tea. While surfing the site you landed on a couple of videos about confidence and relationships. You weren’t looking for those but the thumbnails looked enticing enough. You clicked on the videos watching them one after another and the growing pain of wanting someone with you, cuddling you, watching videos with you, and playing games with you becomes unbearable and you think back to your crush Nanami. His face, his smile, and how much of a wonderful person he is despite his stoic demeanor.
You and Nanami were friends for a while meeting as partners for a project in college to bumping into each other on campus and overtime you had grown feelings for Nanami but, lacked the confidence to tell Nanami your feelings in fear that it might ruin the 3-year long friendship that you two have together.
"Come on Y/N maybe Nanami might like you!” you said as you paced back and forth in your bedroom contemplating actually calling Nanami and telling him your feelings after gaining confidence from the videos you’ve watched. “Maybe I’m overthinking this because of the videos.” You look down at your phone with your finger hovering over your crush's name getting cold feet on confessing your feelings.
You sigh “maybe it’s for the best if we stayed friends. it‘s not worth it to ruin a good friendship,” you said with a sorrowful voice before accidentally clicking the call button for Nanami. In a panic you accidentally drop your phone a couple of times before catching it safely, heaving a sigh of relief before tensing up again and hearing a familiar voice from the phone. “Hello Y/n are you there?” butterflies filled your stomach and your face became redder “Y-yeah! I’m here!” you stuttered trying to regain your composure. After the introduction, both of you started talking for almost an hour catching up on some stuff since you two haven’t had time to hang out due to conflicting schedules.
“Well, it’s nice to hear from you, Y/n, I enjoyed our talk but I have work in the morning,” Nanami said. You were happy to talk to him again but part of you don’t want the conversation to end “O-of course! The same to you!” you said with more fake enthusiasm creeping into your voice. Nanami paused a bit and said “ If anything was bothering you, you can come to me and talk about it.” you feel butterflies in your stomach from his gesture as if the spark has gotten bigger and turned into an uncontrollable flame.
“Have a good night Y/-.” Before Nanami finishes his sentence you blurted out “I love you!” and as soon as you said those three words you regretted it. Before Nanami had time to react to your confession you hung up the phone and your intrusive thoughts crept in.
“Why did you say that?”
“Congrats you ruined the relationship.”
“You should’ve kept your mouth shut.”
“Shit I shouldn’t have confessed, he probably doesn’t want to talk to me,” you said while curling up into a ball on your bed with the light only emanating from your computer. The rain hits your roof harder as your thoughts drag you deeper into a never-ending abyss, hot tears started to roll down your eyes mourning the loss of your friendship with Nanami.
“I wish I could turn back time.”
“I shouldn’t have watched those videos.”
“Will he talk to me if I said it was in a friendly way?”
You heard a knock at the door, you weren’t expecting anyone at all and you don’t want to get up to see who that might be and hope that they would go away. But the knocking grew louder and louder to the point that they were banging at your door, you grew annoyed at whoever is banging at your door. You got up and marched towards your door now pissed at the person that's banging at your door. “Hey! Why the hell are you banging at my door!” you yelled while swinging the door open, the anger that was built up was now being replaced by fear and embarrassment.
He was standing at your doorstep.“You weren’t answering my calls, I wanted to see if you’re ok,” Nanami responded. “My phone was on silent,” you answered quietly, the two of you fell silent for a good few seconds, Nanami was soaked because of the rain and the thoughts started to creep back into your head.
“Great you got him worried over nothing.”
“He got soaked because of you.”
“Apologize.”
Before Nanami spoke up but was quickly shut down by you.“Well it was good seeing you Nanami-” you tried to close the door before Nanami put his hand in the doorway to stop you. “W-wait I wanted to talk about what happened on the phone.” when Nanami said those words your heart sank to your feet. “If you’re going to reject me, do it quickly,” You said with a weak smile.
“Wait what?” Nanami said in confusion.
Your eyes darted to the ground.“W-well, you said you never had an interest in dating and I didn’t want to burden you with my feelings.” you were trembling where you stood. You didn’t dare to look in his eyes out of shame and in fear of the tears threatening to roll down your face. “I’m sorry Nanami-” Before you were able to finish your sentence Nanami spoke up.
“I’m sorry.” you stood frozen, shocked at the fact that Nanami apologized, confused at why he apologized.
Nanami continued to speak.“I’m sorry that I should’ve said my feelings sooner, the last I wanted to do is make you cry.” Nanami slowly pushed to door open and closed the space between the both of you. “I was a coward for not expressing my feelings, I was afraid of losing the friendship, and losing you.” Nanami steps forward not breaking eye contact while you stay frozen processing what was said in the last few minutes.
“I hope that you can forgive me.”
Nanami stood in place holding his breath waiting for your response until your laughter broke the silence. He was confused before you pulled him into a hug “Of course I forgive you Nanami, I was also scared to confess so I guess we’re both cowards.” Nanami formed a small smile on his face “I guess we are.” Nanami pulled away and cupped your face to look at your eyes.
“I love you.”
Nanami said with sincerity in his voice, you smile and speak up.“I love you, too.” before you both leaned into each other for a kiss that felt like it lasted for a long time. When both of you pulled away for air Nanami looked at you never breaking eye contact.“So can I come in? It’s getting cold in these wet clothes.” you came back to reality and felt your face begin to burn up. You’re sure your making a good impression of a tomato.“Oh, shit c-come inside! I don’t want you to catch a cold!” You pulled Nanami inside, all the way to the bathroom “I’ll find some clothes for you.” You closed the door and started to find some old clothes that you had from the times he stayed over.
“I can’t believe that he confessed!”
Your thoughts are now taking over now that the situation is now starting to sink into your mind. “I must be dreaming! If so… then I don’t want to wake up!” You said to yourself hoping that he didn’t overhear. “I don’t think it’s a dream, Y/N” your face turned red when you hear Nanami peeking out of the bathroom, you rushed to him frantically pushing the clothes you’ve found in his face “H-heres your clothes!”
You looked away trying to push the thoughts of him naked away. He gave a little chuckle, “Ok, ok, just wait for me on the couch I’ll get ready.” You did as you were told and went to the couch and decided to turn on the tv, Nanami came out to join you on the couch and you two cuddled while watching tv on a rainy night.
