jealousy makes you blind, but a brick can too

Summary:

A short fluff on how Ushijima deals with jealousy.

Work Text:

Imagine arguing with Ushijima Wakatoshi.

The universe knows this man is very stubborn, honest, logical, and dense. A deadly combination because of how frustrating it would be trying to explain to him why you're mad about something petty. It's the perfect recipe to make you feel like a villain when you get mad at him for being too polite with his fans, especially ones who don't know the definition of personal space or when he leaves the TV remote on the couch where you can't, for the love of god, find it.

"Deep breaths," you mutter under your breath. The grip you had on the counter tightens, tears pricking at your eyes as you try to take deep calming breaths. It's been two hours since you went home from the dinner party thrown by the Adlers team, and a glance at the clock says its 3 in the morning, but sleep was elusive, your body buzzing with the vile jealousy slowly burning on your stomach.

With that thought, the events earlier came flashing back in your head, finally causing tears to fall freely from your eyes.

The party just started an hour ago and you have yet to talk to your fiancé, with him spending the first half hour greeting sponsors, and the next with this lady from some sports station or magazine or whatever that you didn't bother remembering after seeing the way she looks at Wakatoshi.

In your peripheral view, you see the woman place a hand on his arm, giving it a touch too long and too slimy to be considered friendly.

The urge to scratch your nails on her face felt so potent you physically flinch.

Taking a deep calming breath, you cleared your head from such thoughts, trying to appease the raging demon on your shoulder by looking at the shiny diamond ring on your finger given by the love of your life currently being groped by a practical stranger under the guise of idolatry and veneration.

When ten minutes passed and she still hasn't left, actually having the audacity to sit beside Hoshiumi after your fiancé oh-so-kindly asked her if she'd like to take a seat, you left before doing something that will put you down in history, like maybe break a glass on top of her head or smash the cake on her pretty face...

And so, with the petty, immature demon on your shoulder whispering nothing but taunts in your ear, while the kind, sweet angel weeps for your sorry little ass, you sneaked out of your seat. Because that's how petty and immature you could be.

Jealousy is blind, my ass.

When Wakatoshi came to find you in the garden outside, sitting on the freshly mowed lawn with your heels thrown off and munching on a croquembouche with the former Karasuno first years, it was well past midnight and time to go home. The frown on his face seemed normal enough to others, but you knew that disappointment was there, especially when he turned his gaze at you as he helped you stand up. Bidding the group goodbye, you and Wakatoshi make your way back to the car in silence.

Hiccups bloomed in your chest as you struggled to control your tears, emotions jumbled in your head as another adds up to the fray, the regret in leaving him alone for three hours because of petty jealousy. Occupied with your thoughts, you jumped in shock when you felt arms wounding around your waist, followed by a soft bump on your shoulder.

"Tell me why you're upset," he mumbled, lips pressed tight on your shoulder.

Dear god, why is he like this?

You groaned, bowing your head in shame. You tried prying his hands off of you, but he wouldn't budge.

"Please tell me, love," he asked, turning you around to rub soothing circles on your back.

"Why are you like this?" you cried, full-on sobbing now because of how frustrating it is to argue with him when he didn't do anything wrong, yet here he is, still caring.

His brows furrowed at your words, blinking as he tried to comprehend the meaning behind them.

It wasn't like you were unsure of his feelings for you, nor did he give you reason to feel insecure, but there are some things that you couldn't help how they turn out in your head when you've been apart longer than you were together for the past year.

"Can you explain to me what I did wrong?" he asked, looking a little lost as he wiped the remaining tears from your cheeks.

"You didn't even do anything wrong!" you cried, frustrated at him, at yourself, and at everything. "It's just- It's me. I'm being petty and insecure and immature. I hate how I behaved tonight, but I can't help it, love. Not when we've been together for just a week since you came home and I had to share you again to so many other people I don't even know nor seen in my entire life, and that woman-" you were rambling, spitting out the vile words fast.

"God! That woman just went and talked to you about everything under the sun and she was putting her hands all over you like you're some saint who could cure all the illnesses in the world and I hated it. I hated it so much, Toshi, and I feel bad about it because I know I shouldn't feel this way..."

You were quiet then, the two of you occupied by the words you rushed out.

"Were you jealous because she touched me or is there something else?"

Because despite how dense he is, Wakatoshi knows you better than himself.

How you wish there was a hole you could bury yourself into because of how embarrassed you are at this point. With a deep exhale, you wrapped your arms around him, pressing your face closer to his chest so that maybe he wouldn't hear the words.

"I hate how she could talk to you about volleyball without asking you to explain some things."

The admission felt so freeing, no matter how embarrassing it is.

Wakatoshi hummed, his chest vibrating from the sound. He was playing with your hair, his silence growing and growing until you couldn't help it anymore, knowing that by now, this idiot of a man you love is smiling at your shameful admission.

Pushing him away, you squinted up at him and true enough, he was smiling that smile that would've made you blush if only snot wasn't coming out of your nose.

"Go away, Wakatoshi," you mumbled, stepping away from him only for him to follow suit, catching your hand to stop you from pushing him away.

He was grinning now, a cheeky wide grin highlighting his dimples, even as you made attempts to get away from him.

"I'm very lucky to have you," he whispers, pulling you to him before pressing a kiss on your forehead.

"I miss the old you," you shot back dryly, "back when you didn't understand what sarcasm meant."

The only reply you got was a chuckle, before he was sighing, pulling you closer as he leans back on the counter. "Love you," Wakatoshi beamed, blinding you with his overly-bright smile.

"I don't exactly love you right now, so I'd appreciate it if you go away for a second."

"You were just crying because you were jealous, love. If that doesn't mean you love me right now, I'd have to do something to change that," he mused, his teasing tone taking you aback.

"Hm... I'm not too sure about that. After all, jealousy makes you blind, but a brick can, too," you stated, smiling sweetly and patting his shoulder after getting a good look at his shocked expression.

"It's late, better get to bed," you chirped, pulling him after you even as he shakes his head clear of his thoughts, and you noted with small satisfaction that his hand is a little clammy and cold to touch.
