Chapter Text
Opening the bag a crack, Eddie smiled. It had taken months of saving since he’d seen that advert. Going to party after party, upping the price just slightly each time (not like those rich bastards would notice anyway) and now it was finally here. Today was a good fucking day.
-
‘Honey, I’m home,’ Steve heard the front door swing open.
‘Bedroom,’ he called back, returning his focus to the half-folded polo in his hands. Steps thundered towards him from the main room. He could hear something being thrown haphazardly onto the bed before a pair of arms snaked their way around his waist, hands joining, rings clinking together, as a chin rested heavily on his shoulder.
‘I got us something,’ Eddie whispered, Steve could hear the unbridled excitement in his voice, which only spelled trouble. Just as soon it was there, the pressure on his back was gone as Eddie dramatically turned, pulling Steve by the arm, to face the bed, on which a paper bag sat innocently.
‘Oh, and what’s that then?’ Steve questioned, hands on hips, laundry already forgotten.
‘This,’ and Eddie pulled the thing out of the bag.
-
Eddie had first seen the advertisements about half a year ago, and hadn’t thought much of them. Just another toy that’ll come and go, not relevant for a childless adult. But the more he’d seen them the more interested he’d been. They were strangely cute, large eyes and bright soft fur. When he learned they could talk his interest peaked tenfold. Fascinated by the modern technology kids had access to these days.
When they started stocking them at a couple of local shops he knew he had to get one. If only to see if it worked like they said it did before handing it off to one of the gremlins.
He’d had his eyes set on a smaller brown one, something about its stupid little quiff of hair spoke to him. Finally being able to take the box up to the counter and hand over the creased dollars he’d been hiding in his guitar case was a truly momentous feeling.
Maybe he wouldn’t give the little guy away after all.
-
Steve stood, shell shocked, as Eddie pulled his prize from the bag. Mottled brown fur, large soulless eyes, and, was that a beak. A fucking beak.
‘He’s called Steve Jr,’ Eddie supplied happily, placing it on the bedside table. Oh it is not staying there .
‘What is it?’ Steve questioned. Not wanting to give away his distaste too quickly.
‘A furby, look,’ Eddie flipped the ‘furby’ upside down, fiddling with something before setting it back on the table. It took a second. But with a whirr the things' eyes slowly jittered closed and then open again. Beak, yep that was definitely a beak, opening and releasing a slurred cacophony of robotic sounds, before quieting again.
Steve could no longer hide his distaste.
Eddie, seemingly oblivious to his boyfriend’s utter dismay, stared lovingly at ‘ Steve Jr’ before directing his gaze back to the furby's namesake, canines bared in a large grin.
‘Cool right? they’re all the rage right now,’
‘Yeah, among children, Eddie, not full-grown men,’ Steve couldn’t help snapping, immediately regretting it as Eddie's grin faltered, before returning. This time not reaching his eyes. Steve hated that look. The Eddie ‘the freak’ Munson persona that was so agonisingly fake, but convincing enough if you didn’t know where to look.
He sighed, collapsing onto the bed and resting his forehead against Eddie's shoulder.
‘I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that, it's just,’ he sighed again, ’it’s a little creepy isn’t it?’
Opening his eyes, he could see Eddie reaching for the toy, twisting its fur between his fingers.
‘I dunno, I think it’s kind of cute, the technology is pretty metal actually, it learns to talk to you based off your speech,’
Steve turns his head to the side, if he squints, he supposes he can kind of see it.
‘Ok, but Steve Jr, really?’
‘Hey, you’re the one who wanted six kids, I’m just helping you get there,’
‘Shut up,’ he gently pushes Eddie's shoulder, the mood in the room significantly lighter.
‘Well Munson,' Steve slapped his hands against his thighs to emphasise the point, 'I hope you’re prepared for fatherhood, because no child of mine will be leaving around as many socks as you do,’
‘Oh, did you hear that’ Eddie says to the toy in his hands, turning it to face him, ‘moms angry,’
‘Mom also has laundry to fold,’ Steve chided, letting the name slide, for now and nudging a cackling Eddie towards the bedroom door, pushing him out of it, ’so unless you want to be put in the wardrobe, I suggest you take your parenting to the kitchen and teach the furby how to cook dinner,’
‘Steve Jr.’
‘Fine Steve Jr.’
