The full moon disappeared behind the darkening sky and the winds had picked up, filling the sails as well as sweeping through Prince Adrien’s hair as he leaned against the mast on the quarterdeck. The feel of a storm was brewing, not only in the sky, but deep in Adrien’s heart as the ship sailed closer to home. Behind him his ship’s Captain, Luka, played a melancholy tune on his lute. It perfectly matched Adrien’s mood.
“With this strong wind we should make land by sunrise.” Nino said as he climbed the stairs leading to the quarterdeck.
“A storm will slow us down.” Luka countered, lifting his face to the wind. “We might have to find shelter and wait it out.”
“I’m not in that great of a hurry to get home.” Adrien added, folding his arms and kicking his shoe on the deck.
“Aww, don’t be like that.” Nino said, patting his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “Not many people get to have a ball held in their honour. I mean the music, the food, the ladies…”
“It’s a bride finding ball.” Adrien deadpanned, rolling his eyes. “All it’s going to be is a bevy of tizzied up entitled wall flowers in some sort of hideous beauty contest with me as the prize.” He emphasised, tapping his own chest.
“Doesn’t sound so bad to me.” Nino chuckled. “I wouldn’t mind lots of beautiful women throwing themselves over me.”
“Well you’re welcome to your pick of the bunch as far as I’m concerned because I have no intention participating.” Adrien offered. “I’m sure as Captain of my guard there would be plenty of ladies with an eye for a man in uniform. Although I thought you were a taken man”
Nino smiled to himself. “Well, I think Lady Alya might like me. She kind of smiled at me the last time she was at the palace. I don’t know though. Maybe it is just the uniform.”
“What about a man in a bandana?” Luka asked, shifting the tune he was playing to something less depressing.
“Not if you turn up smelling like a fishmonger.” Nino teased. Adrien chuckled at Luka’s feigned offence, then he let out a sigh.
“It’s not fair.” Adrien lamented. “My father is forcing me to find a wife, like my only goal in life is to produce an heir and secure the kingdom. I don’t want to pick a wife because I have to, I wanted something more than that, something… special.”
“You’re just an incurable romantic.” Nino said. “You know the world of a Prince doesn’t work that way.”
Luka stopped playing and stood up, walking over to the Prince. “Your highness, I know it feels like an orchestra is drowning you out right now, but it doesn’t mean all is lost. You never know, you might just meet someone that fills that missing melody in your heart. Look at your own parents. They didn’t even meet until their wedding day, but in the end they made beautiful music together.”
“Yeah, maybe.” He said, not looking at him. “But love at first sight is about as rare as finding a pink pearl in the ocean.” He bent his head down, casting his eyes to the deck under his feet. “You better secure the deck in case this wind picks up more.”
Luka looked over towards Nino and the two nodded in silent understanding, making their way back down to the deck and leaving the Prince alone with his thoughts.
Adrien turned his head and looked out over the rippling ocean, resting his hand on the rail. He really wished he could talk to his mother about all this, but ever since she fell ill just a year ago, she had become weaker and weaker by the day. Now she was totally bedridden and his father spent almost all his waking hours beside her bed to the detriment of the running of their kingdom, reading book after book looking for anything that could make her well again. He had sent Adrien and his companions travelling far and wide with their trading ships in search of a cure, but nothing they had found helped.
Now Adrien had learned that according to the law he must choose a bride before his 21st birthday. With all the concern over his mother’s condition, it had become something that was all but forgotten. Adrien leaned his forearms on the edge of the stern and let out a long sigh. Ever since he was a little boy, his mother had always told him stories of how one day he would meet his Princess and they would fall in love and live happily ever after. While his own parents had an arranged marriage, they were lucky in that they soon fell in love with each other. He knew of others though, like Audrey and Andre Bourgeois who did not have a happy union. He hoped he wouldn’t end up like them. Before his mother had become too ill, she had organised the ball in the hope that Adrien might meet someone he liked rather than have a marriage arranged for him. Adrien was grateful to her that at least he was being given some choice in the matter, even if it was limited.
Adrien dropped his head and let out a groan. Just then he heard a splash in the water below. Picking off a lantern from a nearby beam he held it over the edge of the stern. Was it a dolphin? Adrien turned behind him to see if his friends had also seen it, but they had already made their way to the other end of the deck.
Looking back into the water, his mouth fell open when two eyes peered up at him. Blue eyes glistening in the paled light. Playful yet shy, sparkling but mysterious. Adrien was sure he had never in his life seen eyes like that and he was completely mesmerised. The wind picked up and swirled between them with electricity lighting up the sky and the sound of thunder rolling on the horizon as the lantern snuffed out and his sight of the vision in the water with it.
“Your highness.” Luka called out from behind him. “The wind has changed direction. We need to secure the sails.”
Adrien tore his eyes away from the water to address the ship’s Captain. “Do what needs to be done.” He replied. Turning back to the water, Adrien saw what looked to be the retreating flick of a tail as it disappeared under the waves.
“Sir.” Nino said, ascending the ladder as the boat began to rock in the waves. “Adrien, we need you to take the helm. The chart shows a reef nearby.” Another flash of lightning and the clouds broke sending cascades of rain down on them.
“Did you see it?” Adrien asked, pointing into the water.
“See what?”
“I don’t know. A girl I think.”
“A girl?” Nino asked, looking with concern. “Have you been drinking sea water?”
“What? No! I saw two eyes looking at me, the most beautiful ocean blue eyes. Maybe it was a mermaid or something.”
Nino shook his head. “A mermaid? Oh come on, you don’t believe those kinds of fairy tales do you? Hurry now, we have bigger things to worry about.” He indicated, pointing to the falling rain. Adrien looked back to the spot where he had seen her. Surely he didn’t just imagine it. As the waves crashed against the ship, Adrien took the ship's wheel.
~~~~~
Marinette dived under the water’s surface, flapping her tail as fast as she could, her heart racing in her chest. She hadn’t meant for the young man on the ship to see her, and she knew it had been wrong, but there was something about him that made her want to know more about him. Yes, he was handsome, and his emerald eyes she was sure were etched forever in her memory, but there was a sadness there too, and that pained her greatly.
Marinette flapped her tail through the water, her long dark tresses trailing behind her. She wasn’t heading anywhere in particular, she just needed to swim out the nervous energy that was running through her. The great Oracle Mermaid, Tikki, had warned her not to get too close to humans while in her mermaid form. There were times that the Oracle had allowed her to walk on the Earth for short periods of time so she could use her power to help someone worthy, but she had never really met too many people in those moments. At least she had not met anyone like him before. Her heart raced in her chest again as she thought of him. What did that mean?
Overhead, Marinette saw another flash of lightning and felt the momentum of the ocean shifting. She had seen many storms in this region before and this particular straight was notorious for its wild weather that often capsized ships caught in its crosswinds. Concerned, Marinette quickly swam back up to the surface. As her head broke out of the water, the thunder crashed and she could see in the distance the crew of the ship running on the deck to hold down the wild sails that had broken free.
Swimming closer, she spied the young Prince holding fast on the ship's wheel, keeping the vessel to the course and away from where Marinette knew there was a concealed reef near her island. Her heart pounded in her chest as she watched the ship keel dangerously hard to starboard and one of the young men almost fell overboard.
“Nino!” Luka yelled, reaching out to grab him as he skidded on the deck. “We need to get the Prince below the decks, it’s not safe.”
Nino and Luka helped each other as the rest of the crew fought against the winds to hold the ship together. Reaching the quarterdeck, Luka grabbed Adrien by the arm. “Nino will get you below to safety.” He said. “I’ll take the helm.” Adrien shook his head, beads of water dripping off his soaked hair.
“I’ve got hold of it. You need to help the crew.”
“I must insist Sir, your safety is my first priority.” Luka pleaded.
In the end Adrien relented, letting Luka take the helm. At that moment a commotion broke out on the deck and a loud crack was heard. “She’s gonna go!” One of the men exclaimed.
“Look out.” Nino yelled as another loud crack reverberated and one of the masts split and began to fall towards where the Prince was standing. Adrien tried to leap out of the way from the falling beam just as the ship lurched wildly, the bean striking him and sending him over the edge.
“Your highness!” Voices yelled from the deck. Nino and Luka gripped the edge of the ship searching desperately in the swirling ocean, but the Prince was nowhere to be seen.
Below the ocean surface, Marinette swam as fast as her tail could push her. She had seen everything that had happened and knew the Prince wouldn’t last long unconscious on the water. Scooping him into her arms, she fought against the strong tide and pushed his head above the surface.
Nearby, Marinette could see the beach on her small island. Holding onto him with all her strength, she pulled him towards the shore. When she reached the beach she laid him on the sand as the rain began to recede. She could see he wasn’t breathing and there was a contusion on his temple. Closing her eyes, Marinette held his head in her hands and a light began to glow. Moments later the injury had disappeared and Adrien breathed in sharply. “It’s alright.” She said softly, stroking his hair. “You’re alright now.”
Adrien slowly opened his eyes and was met with those same ocean blue ones he had seen earlier now hovering above him. “Have I died and gone to heaven?” He asked. She smiled softly at him.
“No. You fell overboard and I pulled you to the island. I’m sure your crew will find you here soon.”
Adrien looked at her confused, trying to piece together what happened, but all his brain could register was that she was moving away from him. He reached out and grabbed her wrist. “Wait.” She stopped and looked back over her shoulder at him. Adrien looked over her and saw on the edge of the water her shimmering pink tail. Adrien’s eyes drifted back up to her flowing raven hair and back to her sparkling eyes. “You are real.” He whispered, almost as though he was afraid that if he spoke louder an illusion would shatter.
“Yes.” She said softly. “But you must let me go now.”
“Why?” He asked. Marinette realised he was still holding her wrist and it did funny things to her heart and stomach.
“Because, it isn’t safe for me.” She said, casting her eyes away from him. “I’m not supposed to let human’s see me.”
“I would never hurt you.” Adrien said earnestly. She looked back at him, at the soft way he looked at her. No one had ever looked at her like that, and she knew in her heart that he spoke the truth. The clouds began to dissipate and the moon began to peak through, shedding a soft glow over her and making her look even more ethereal to him. Without a single thought in his mind except the beating of his own heart, Adrien reached up his hand and tucked a stray dark strand behind her ear.
Marinette stilled at his touch, her breath catching in her throat. Adrien paused momentarily, watching her eyes and wondering if he had overstepped a boundary. He was becoming lost in her bluebell gaze, like a spell had been cast over him. Slowly he slid his hand to cup her face, his thumb gently brushing her cheek. He thought her skin might be cold, but she was warm and so very soft.
“I’ve never met anyone like you before. It’s like we are in the middle of a dream and I never want to wake up.” He spoke softly. “You take my breath away.”
Marinette closed her eyes and leaned into his hand. His fingers were cool against her burning skin. She couldn’t help explain the way she felt. She was so lost in the moment, so lost in his touch, that she almost didn’t hear the voices calling in the distance.
“Adrien.”
“Adrien, are you here?”
Marinette’s eyes flew open, already missing his hand that he withdrew as he stood up to look for the source of the voices.
“I have to go.” Marinette said in a panic, pushing herself into the water.
“No, don’t go.” Adrien called, chasing after her until the water was to his knees. “Will I ever see you again?” Marinette turned back to look at him.
“I don’t know. I hope so, if fate will bring us together again.” She said, before she swung around and dived under the water.
“Wait.” Adrien called out again, but she was gone. “I don’t even know your name.”
“Your highness, thank god.” Luka said in relief as he and Nino made their way down to the beach.
“Adrien, we were so worried.” Nino said, helping Adrien back from the water. “When you went overboard we feared the worst.”
“Oh, I…um… I swam here.” He fibbed, trying to ignore the tingling still in his fingers from where he had touched her face. “And I feel like a drowned cat.”
Luka slipped off his overcoat and wrapped it around Adrien’s shoulders. “Come, let’s get you on board with a hot beverage.”
Adrien walked with his friends, casting one more glance over his shoulder towards the beach.
“Everything alright?” Nino asked.
Adrien only nodded in response, but he doubted his heart would ever be the same way again.
~~~~~
King Gabriel opened the curtains in the bedroom where his wife Queen Emilie laid. The warm sunlight streamed in, reaching her pale face. “The sun will do you good my dear.” He said, taking up his usual place beside her and holding her hand in his. She squeezed it weakly, her only means of communicating with him now. He lifted her hand and kissed the back of it, bringing just the smallest hint of a smile to her lips.
Two sharp knocks and the heavy oak door opened. The King’s trusted assistant, Nathalie, entered with a book in her hand.
“His Royal Highness, Prince Adrien, has returned from his voyage abroad. The Captain has delivered the ship’s log for your perusal.” Nathalie handed the King the book and waited while Gabriel read through its contents. When he finished he closed the book and looked at Emilie. Her eyes were closed, but he knew she was still awake and he didn’t want to alarm her with the accident Adrien had.
“Will you ask my son to come and see me in the study in 20 minutes.”
Nathalie nodded, taking the log book and exiting the room. Gabriel resumed holding Emilie’s hand. “I’m sorry my love, but we have still not found a remedy for your condition. I promise though that I will not give up. I must leave you for a little while now though while I talk to our son. The ball will be in only a few days, and he needs to understand what is expected of him.”
Emilie weakly squeezed his hand once again. Gabriel stood up and leaned forward to kiss her softly on the forehead before leaving for his study.
It weighed heavily on him that he was going to have take more of Adrien’s freedoms away, but he had no choice. If something happened to Adrien and he had no heir, the kingdom would go to his older cousin Félix. Gabriel wasn’t about to let that happen.
Sitting at his large imposing desk, he tapped his fingers as he waited for his son. When the knock finally came he called out “enter” and Adrien walked in, looking apprehensive as he took a seat opposite his father.
“I have read through the Captain's log.” Not a hello, not a how are you or I missed you. Straight to the point. Adrien wasn’t surprised, but he would be lying if he didn't admit it hurt.
“It was a successful trip for trade, Father. We have a new agreement for exports to the Far East and…”
“Yes, I read the notes.” Gabriel cut off coldly. “And you found no new treatments for your mother either.”
Adrien fiddled with the Agreste signet ring on his finger and looked at his feet. “We exhausted all avenues. Next time we will travel further.”
“Captain Couffaine will lead the next expedition. You will no longer be travelling with them.”
“What?” Adrien gasped, but he recoiled back under his father’s icy glare.
“You fell overboard.” His father snapped. “What if you had died last night? What would have become of us? What would that have done to your mother?”
“But father…” Adrien protested. “We were near land. She… I swam to the shore and the others rescued me from there. I was fine.”
“This is not a request, Adrien. As your King I forbid it.” Gabriel snarled. Adrien sat back in his seat. He knew his father was not the kind of man that changed his mind easily and arguing would be fruitless.
“Yes Sir.” He said quietly.
“Good. Now the ball will be in a few days and preparations are well underway. You need to see the tailor to finalise your clothes and ensure your mask fits.”
“Mask?” Adrien quiried.
“Yes. Nathalie suggested a masquerade. They are quite fashionable this season apparently.”
Adrien gave his father a flat glare. “So, not only am I supposed to choose a bride I don’t know, but now one I can’t see either?”
Gabriel rolled his eyes. “Don’t be so dramatic Adrien. While you were away I already struck a deal for your future bride. She is here now and I will introduce you to her at dinner.”
Adrien shouldn't have been shocked, really he shouldn’t have, because he knew deep down his father would pull something like this.
“Father, the idea of the ball was so I could have the choice.”
“I am giving you a choice, Adrien.” His father snapped at him. “I am giving you the choice to do the right thing by your kingdom and your father. I expect you to be at dinner promptly and to behave like the Prince I raised you to be.”
Gabriel waved his hand at his son, picking up his pen and looking at his papers. Adrien balled up his fits. “Can I at least know her name?”
“Lady Lila Rossi.” Gabriel said, not even looking up from his desk. “Her father Lord Rossi owns one of the largest trading fleets this side of Europe. He would make a useful ally and help secure the trading corridor from pirates and brigands. Now if that is all…”
Adrien turned and made his way across the long corridors towards the East wing, pausing out the front of his mother’s bedroom. He opened the door slightly, but saw his mother was sleeping, a vase of fresh cut red roses on the table. He didn’t want to disturb her, so he quietly closed the door again, resting his head against it.
“Good afternoon, your highness.” A female voice said behind him. Adrien swung his head around to find a young woman curtsying to him, her long brown hair falling over her shoulders. As she straightened she delicately held out her hand to him. There was something in her olive eyes that made Adrien feel uncomfortable.
“Who are you?” He asked. “This is my mother's private quarters, you shouldn’t be here.”
The young woman retracted her hand back to her chest. “Oh, please forgive me, your highness. I’m Lady Lila Rossi. I was invited by the King and I’m afraid I have become quite lost. I recognised you from your portrait in the great hall and I thought maybe you could help me find my way back. I didn’t mean to disturb you.”
The young woman curtsied again and turned to head down the hall that would lead back to where Gabriel was. Adrien called out to her, stopping her before she went that way.
“I do apologise.” He said, feeling awkward as he looked at his apparent future bride. “I shouldn’t have snapped at you. My only excuse is that I only just arrived back from a long journey and I’m quite tired. The visitor quarters are down this way.” He said, pointing down the other corridor. Adrien was then taken aback when she then looped her arm around his.
“I perfectly understand. Thank you for walking me back, you really are such a gentleman. Everyone said that you were. I’m looking forward to us spending more time together and getting to know each other better.”
Adrien felt a cold shiver run down his spine. There was something about this girl that rubbed him the wrong way and as she prattled on all he could think of were the beautiful bluebell eyes of the mermaid he had seen. How he wished he knew her name.
That evening was one of the most painful dinners Adrien had ever sat through. In an attempt to make things less awkward the King had invited some other important Ladies of the court to stay at the palace so Lila could meet them at dinner and perhaps make friends. Adrien was almost grateful when Chloé, the Bourgeois daughter he had known since childhood, sat on the other side of him and monopolised the conversation. He could see Lila was gritting her teeth but trying to be polite in front of his father’s presence. King Gabriel for his part said very little though the dinner, seemingly distracted.
In his mind Gabriel was convincing himself Lila was the right choice. He had already previously ruled out Lady Alya. While her father was famous in Europe for his great Menagerie of exotic animals, she seemed disinterested in the Prince and had her eye on the Captain of the Guard. Lady Chloé was the daughter of his old friend Andre, although Gabriel wasn’t keen on the idea of Andre’s wife Audrey becoming one of his in-laws. Lady Kagami was the daughter of an old ally, but like Alya seemed to have had her attention elsewhere. That left Lady Lila. She was from new money, but money nonetheless and seemed quite enamoured with Adrien. She also held her own well in conversation with a dominating Chloé, a skeptical Kagami and didn’t seem to mind the twenty questions that Lady Alya was throwing at her.
“You must have seen a lot of amazing sights on your travels, Lila.”
“Oh yes, I travel with my father all the time. I think sometimes I spend more time at sea than I do on land and I’ve been to some amazing and exotic places like Shanghai in Japan.”
“Shanghai is in China, not Japan.” Kagami said flatly with narrowed eyes.
Lila simply smiled at her brightly. “Oh yes, of course. Silly me. I’ve just been to so many places I get that all confused sometimes.”
Somehow Kagami doubted that.
Chloé waved her hand around. “I couldn’t stand spending that many months on board a ship with all those stinking sailors. How do you stay sane with nothing to do?”
Lila let out a polite giggle, covering her mouth with her hand. “But there is so much to see when you are out on the ocean.”
“What water? Sky? Stinking sailors?” Chloé shot back, but Lila shook her head.
“No, amazing sea creatures, whales as long as a ship, squid as a large man, oh and of course the mermaids.”
Adrien sat up more at that. “You’ve seen a Mermaid?”
Lila looked a little too smug for Adrien’s liking, knowing she had everyone’s attention. “Yes, many times. I’m great friends with some. They come and see me every time I am on a voyage and we swim together in the ocean.”
Alya gasped. “You swam with a Mermaid? That’s amazing.”
“But don’t they smell of fish?” Chloé asked with her nose turned up.
“Not really, but they are cold blooded like fish so their skin is like ice to touch.”
That was strange, Adrien thought to himself. When he had touch the mermaid that had rescued him she didn’t feel cold at all.
“I’d love to meet a mermaid and talk to one. Do you think I could?” Alya asked, clearly excited.
Lila fidgeted a little. “Oh, well, they can be wary of strangers, and can attack when feeling threatened, but like I said I am friends with them so I’m sure you would be alright with me. I’m not sure when the next trade exposition is though, but I’ll let you know.”
Adrien noticed Kagami was frowning all through Lila’s story. She clearly was having her own doubts about its authenticity as he was. Why would Lila make up such a story? Was she just trying to big note of herself in some way? Did she think it would impress him? Of course, she had no way of knowing that he had met a real mermaid himself, but why lie about it like that?
As the conversation eventually moved on, Adrien for his part smiled and nodded graciously, internally counting down the minutes until his father stood up to retire for the evening. Prying himself away from the ever more clingy Lila, Adrien gave Nino a note to pass on for him and went to hide out in his own quarters until after most of the young ladies retired for the evening. Opening his bedroom door, the corridors were quiet and Adrien slipped out of the palace and made his way into the gardens.
Standing by the fountain waiting for him was Lady Kagami. “You asked to see me?” She said to him as he approached.
“Thank you for coming Kagami.” Adrien smiled, genuinely happy to see her. “I know we could get into trouble for this.”
“I don’t mind a little trouble sometimes, you know that.” Kagami said with an air of mischief. “But why did you ask me to come and meet you?”
“I needed someone to talk to, someone I can trust. Care to come for a walk with me?”
“Of course.” She replied, taking the arm he offered and walking further into the gardens.

Marinette sat on the beach of her Island home, crafting a shell bracelet. She had found a perfect fan shaped shell, just the right size to make a bracelet. She was trying to take her mind off the Prince, but it was to no avail. No matter how hard she tried she couldn’t stop thinking about him. In all her years of immortality, she had never felt like this before about anyone. Tying the bracelet onto her wrist, she pressed her hands into the warm sand and wondered how he was? Biting her bottom lip, an idea came to her mind.
Even though she knew it was wrong she left the island and the reef and swam in the direction of the township where the palace was on the seashore. She had been there before, but only ever to watch the townspeople in the marketplace - from a distance of course. She liked watching the simple folk as they went about their day and the children that would play along the shore. She knew the Oracle would be displeased with her, but if only she could catch a glimpse of him again she would be satisfied.
Approaching the coastline just on dusk, Marinette found the Agreste Palace. A great stone wall surrounded three sides of the impressive building, but the fourth edge backed onto an expansive garden which reached right down to the beach by the water. Marinette heard voices on the pathway and hid behind some rocks that protruded out of the water. Almost instantly her heart beat faster when she recognises the voice of the Prince.
“…and I wasn’t expecting to have my hand forced like this, but my father made the decision while I wasn’t here and I don’t know what I can do about it.”
“I’m so sorry Adrien.” A female voice replied. “But I do understand as well as you do the pressure that comes with being royalty, marriage being one of them.”
“That’s why I wanted to talk to you.”
Marinette peaked her eyes around the rock she was hiding behind to spy a look at the woman with the Prince and her heart instantly sank. Watching as he indicated to a seat near a small alcove, Marinette could see how beautiful the woman was. If she had legs right now she would kick herself. Who was she kidding? Of course a handsome Prince like that would have someone and it sounded like he was about to confess to her. Marinette knew she shouldn’t intrude on such a private moment, but her curiosity got the better of her and she stealthily swam closer to them, hiding behind another rock formation.
“Kagami… I think… I think I’m in love.” He admitted to her.
Kagami placed a hand on her chest. “In love? With who?”
Adrien’s face lit up into a soft smile. “She’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen and has the most amazing blue bell eyes and long raven hair that looked almost lavender and pink at its ends and she wrote a pink pearl around her neck.”
“A pink pearl? She must be a lady of some note then?” Kagami mused. It was common knowledge that pink pearls were quite rare and hard to find.
“I met her while on the last voyage and I’ve never felt this way about any girl before, but I’m afraid that I will never see her again.”
Kagami placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Maybe she will be at the ball? There are ladies coming from far and wide.”
“Not this one.” Adrien said sorrowfully. “She’s a world away from me now, a whole ocean is between us in fact.”
Kagami studied his face as his eyes lingered out over the ocean. If it was one thing about Kagami, she was always quite perceptive and her instincts were usually on point. “What are you trying to tell me, Adrien? When you say there was an ocean between you, you mean that literally, don’t you?”
Adrien nodded his head. “When I fell overboard she saved me. Kagami, she isn’t a thing like what Lila was describing. When we touched there was nothing cold about her. She was warm and soft and kind. I can't even go and look for her because my father has forbidden me to sail the seas again. Besides, my father has already decided my life for me.”
Marinette could hardly breathe. It was her he was talking about and for the first time in her life she cursed the tail that she had been born with. The Oracle only granted her the ability to walk when her powers were needed to help someone worthy. Marinette knew the Oracle would never grant that wish to her for the sake of love.
“What about your mother?” Kagami asked. “I’m sure she would rather see you happy than be forced into a marriage with someone like Lila.”
Adrien tried to bite back the tears that were threatening his eyes. “Mother wouldn’t like this at all. She had always been opposed to the idea of an arranged marriage for me, but her illness has advanced much more since I last left to search for a cure. She can’t even speak now. Father is beside himself, but we have tried everything. I’m not sure how much longer she will last.” He held back a sob in his throat. “I don’t know what else I can do. Father is looking to me to take the throne soon and by the law I must be wed.”
“And what about your mermaid?”
Adrien looked at her with sad eyes. “I left my heart in that reef with her, but I also know that my father is right. I have to choose what is in the best interest of my people and my kingdom.”
“But shouldn’t the happiness of their Prince be in their best interest?” Adrien looked away with sad eyes.
“You know it doesn’t work that way. I just wish I could have seen her one more time.”
Marinette listened as Adrien continued to talk and knew in her heart what she had to do. She would go to the Oracle, but not for herself. If the Prince had to be condemned to a forced marriage, she could at least give him back the mother he dearly loved. Perhaps if she did, it may even save him from his predicament.
Marinette was about to make her presence known to the Prince and tell him she could help when running footsteps soon came down the winding path.
“Your Highness!” The young man called. Marinette recognised him as one of the men from the ship.
“Nino, what is it?” Adrien asked, standing up and offering his hand to Kagami.
“The King needs you right now. The Queen’s safety has been compromised.”
Adrien didn’t wait for any more explanation. He grabbed Kagami by the hand and the two of them ran back up the pathway towards the palace.
Marinette watched on as the Prince and his companions disappeared behind the trees. There was nothing more that Marinette could do from her place in the ocean. She would need to see the Oracle.
It was getting late into the evening as Marinette approached where the merchant ships were docked. There were the remnants of the evening markets being packed up alongside the dock, and the air smelled of the sweets and spices that had been for sale. One of the vendors sang a tune as they packed the stalls away for the night. As she came closer, Marinette recognised one of the ships as belonging to the infamous Pirate XY. The man himself soon walked down the gangplank and onto the wharf, greeting a hooded woman that came to meet him.
Marinette knew XY had a bad reputation, mostly for underhanded dealings and mistreating his crew. Some said he had many merchant ships paying him highly for protection in the trade routes. Marinette thought it strange that a well dressed female would willingly want to meet with him. Curious, she swam under the wooden warf that XY and the woman were standing on to listen.
“I wasn’t expecting you tonight?” XY said to her.
“Don’t get too excited, I can’t stay. Do you have my package?”
“Do you have my money?”
“So suspicious. I thought we knew each other better than that.”
The man snickered. “Yep, I’d say we know each other pretty well, Foxy.” He placed his hands on her waist and brought her closer to him. “I’ve missed you baby, but it feels like I only see you these days when you want something from me.”
“You know I love you and I miss our little rendezvous together on your ship.” The woman replied, her voice sultry and provocative as she walked her fingers up the open buttons on his chest. “But I need assurances first.”
“The apothecary I got it from assured me that just a few drops is all you need. It’s odorless and painless, so there won’t be any fuss. The effects last for about an hour or so and if anyone saw them, they would just assume they were drunk. The bonus is they don’t remember much afterwards.”
“You have personal experience with that?” The woman mused.
“I’ve used it a few times. How else do you think I transfer those mermaids off the ship without attracting attention? The buyers like them alive, what they do with them after that isn’t my concern.”
Marinette had to hold back a gasp. So the rumours were true, there was a black market in mermaid sales. She had heard stories, but never seen it herself.
“So how are the new in-laws?”
The woman sniggered. “They’re a bunch of trusting fools. It will be so easy to pull one over them.”
Marinette felt sorry for whoever the woman was married to. She tried to get a better look at the her between the gaps in the wood, but all she could see was a necklace with what looked to be a foxtail charm on the end of it. That must have been the reference for the nickname.
“Good to know.” XY replied. “But don’t I even get a hint?”
“The less you know the better. Once everything is complete I’ll be sure to message you with a more suitable compensation for all your help. I’ve already started the ball rolling by deflecting attention and once the papers are signed, I’ll have everything I want.”
“And how long will the new husband last?”
Marinette saw the woman hand over a purse and place a small vial into her bag. “I’ll let you know.” She said before stepping closer to kiss the man. “And then we can be together, just as I promised you.” She gave him a more searing kiss under the hood of her cloak before leaving. XY opened the purse and bit down on one of the coins. Satisfied at the authenticity of the contents, he left the wharf and headed for the town tavern.
Marinette swam away from the wharf and continued her way out to sea. Clearly the young woman was planning on drugging someone, but not knowing who she was or who her intended victim was made it difficult for Marinette to do anything about it. She just hoped that something would stop the girl from carrying out her evil deed.
Meanwhile, Adrien left Kagami at her sleeping quarters and followed Nino towards the Queen's chamber. King Gabriel was there with Nathalie and one of the chambermaids.
“Adrien.” He said gruffly. “Your mother’s safety has been put at risk.”
“What?” Adrien looked over towards his mother’s bed. She appeared as though she was asleep, but her uneven breathing told Adrien that she was listening.
“Please take a seat, your highness.” Nathalie said more kindly. Adrien eyed his father and the maid before sitting down. Nathalie then turned her attention to the maid. “Now tell the King what you told me.”
The maid twiddled her fingers nervously. “I comes in to stoke the fire likes I does every night before bed. But when I comes in tonight this mess was everywheres on the floor.”
Adrien could see where the vase of roses he had seen earlier in the afternoon had been knocked over, the flowers strewn all over the floor. A clear indication that an intruder had been in the room.
“Are you sure no one else has been in this room this evening?” Nathalie quizzed her.
“No Mam.” The woman replied. “Only me.”
“Damn!” Gabriel exclaimed, taking off his glasses and rubbed a hand down his face. With the preparations for the ball there were far too many strangers around the palace right now. A thief perhaps being opportunistic, or worse. He then pointed at Nino. “Ensure that a guard is kept at this door and one patrolling the courtyard, day and night.” He instructed. “We need reinforcements around the palace walls and all guests into the ball need to be scrutinised.”
“Sir, do you think it wise to pull all out resources into one place?” Nathalie queried.
“I will not leave my wife exposed to danger in her condition. No one except for you, me and the chambermaid are to enter this room.”
“Father, what about…” Adrien began to ask.
“No one.” The King snapped. “Not even you, at least not until after the ball. Come with me.”
Adrien gave a forlorn glance to Nino before he followed his father from his mothers room and down the darkened corridor to his father’s office. “I am not amused at your sneaking off around the Palace grounds with Lady Kagami. I’m aware of your long standing friendship, but it is highly inappropriate considering your engagement.” He said, sitting heavily in his chair.
“It hardly feels like an engagement.” Adrien grumbled.
Gabriel was not amused. “Maybe when you are older you will understand how important this engagement is. We are a small country and we need to forge new alliances. Lila’s father is an important man and can guarantee the safe passage of the merchant ships. Understood?”
“Don’t you find Lila and her stories strange? And how is it that her father’s ships are not being attacked by pirates when so many others are? Doesn’t something seem strange to you?”
“What seems strange is your stubbornness to do what is required of you.” Gabriel fumed.
“I was supposed to have the choice.” Adrien said exasperated. “That was why mother suggested we hold a ball and here you are making the choice for me?”
“Your mother might have wanted the soft approach, but I’m not about to leave the fate of our people to your romantic whims. I told her not to fill your head with those ridiculous fairytales. Believe me, if I could have cancelled the ball I would have, but the invitations had already been sent and the daughters of very important people will be in attendance. You will be gracious to the young ladies presented to you, but remember who you are betrothed to.”
“But father…”
“Understood!” Gabriel yelled.
Adrien lowered his head. “Yes Sir.” He replied before standing up and slowly making his way back to his own room. Walking out onto his balcony he gripped the rail and looked up towards the moon. In his mind all he could see was bluebell eyes, but on his shoulders all he could feel was the weight of expectation.
~~~~~
The following morning Marinette approached the coral reef where the Oracle resided. Marinette had known the Oracle all her life and she had a great deal of awe and respect for her. Tikki was among the oldest and wisest of the merpeople. The reef opened like a curtain, revealing where the Oracle sat on a great clam shell throne, her red tail matching her flaming hair.
“You have come to seek my assistance.” The Oracle said.
“Great Tikki.” Marinette bowed to her. “I have become aware of a human who is in need of my power to heal them. I humbly ask your permission to walk on the Earth so that I may help her.”
Marinette dared to raise her eyes to the deity who was looking at her with a calm countenance. “Do you ask this for the Queen, or for your own heart?”
Marinette was taken aback. “How did you know?”
Tikki swam up from her resting place on the clam and came closer to the young mermaid. “I am an Oracle. I see and know everything.” She smiled at her kindly. “You are not the first mermaid to fall in love with a human, but are you sure of your feelings?”
Marinette felt a blush spread across her cheeks. “I… I think so. We didn’t spend much time together, but there was something there. It was like I had found a missing part of myself.”
“Perhaps you did.” Tikki mused at the reddening of Marinette’s cheeks. “I have known you since you were a wee merbaby and I have never seen you feel this strongly about anyone before, human or merfolk.”
Marinette began to twiddle with her fingers. “This isn’t about my feelings for the Prince, although I don't deny them, but I have come about his mother. She is suffering from an illness there seems no cure for and the Prince… he must announce his engagement to a woman he doesn’t love on the King’s orders. I think his mother wouldn’t approve of what his father is doing. I know that I can’t ever be with the Prince, but I could at least give this gift to him by giving him back his mother and maybe saving him from an unhappy life.”
Tikki listened to her impassioned speech and was moved by her conviction. “That is a truly selfless act, Marinette. For that reason, not only shall you use your power to heal the Queen, but you may also attend the ball.”
“Me? Attend the ball?” Marinette said, amazed.
“Yes Marinette.” Tikki reaffirmed. Swimming over to a chest, she opened it and picked up a necklace with a pink pearl. Holding the jewel between her hands, she infused it with magic. Returning to Marinette she tied it around her neck. “As before, it will activate as soon as you emerge from the water but you will only have until midnight before the magic wears off. You must complete your task by then and get back to the water as quickly as possible.”
Marinette looked as it hung around her, her only way to transform into a human. “Is there no way that I can become a human permanently?”
Tikki’s expression became serious. “Is that what you wish for?” The young mermaid nodded. “Marinette, you are a Princess amongst our people and one of the last remaining immortals.” She then placed a hand onto the mermaid’s cheek. “Would you really trade your immortality, and your life in the ocean to grow old and fade away?”
It was a little scary when it was put to her that way. Everything she was, everything she had ever known would be gone in an instant. “Couldn’t I do more good with my gift on the Earth than I can in the water.”
“You could also be accused of witchcraft.”
Marinette knew that. “I get accused of that now. More than once I’ve been confused for a Syren or a sorceress. There are many strange stories being told about Mermaids, and so many have disappeared to traders and pirates. I heard for myself that mermaids are being captured and sold, most are never seen again. But… I don’t want to live forever if I have to live alone.”
Tikki nodded knowingly. “If the Prince feels the same about you, then there may be a way, but you need to complete this task first. Only the right choice will grant you your greatest wish.”
The young mermaid watched as Tikki returned to her clam throne and the reef closed around her, encasing the Oracle back inside. Marinette felt confused at her words. Only the right choice. Marinette knew in her heart there could only be one choice, she must help the Queen. She held back the tears from her eyes. Well, at least she could see the Prince again. That would have to be enough.
~~~~~
Adrien shifted uncomfortably in his seat as the next eligible young maiden was introduced to him, thinking they stood a chance to win his heart. Princesses, duchesses and Ladies of the Court were all brought through the door in an endless parade of mindless chatter and flirtation. He was over this pointless charade. All he wanted was for this night to be done with. He straightened the lapels on his black coat. He had asked the seamstress to include little gold cat paw prints into the design as a tribute for his mother. He missed hearing her call him her kitten as she used to.
“How does the bride hunting go cousin?” Prince Félix asked, slapping a hand onto Adrien’s shoulder.
“Painfully.” Adrien replied, not caring if his father heard him, although he was pretty sure Nathalie did judging by the look on her face.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Félix said, although Adrien wasn’t sure how much he really meant that.
“I would have thought you would have been just as happy for me not to find a bride.”
Félix chuckled. “I’m not that cruel, cousin. Although if I wanted to I could challenge you to a duel, bump you off and claim your kingdom for my own.” Félix ignored the glare Gabriel was giving him.
“Yeah, you would.” Adrien bristled.
“Truly though, I’ll be just as happy for you to earn your own inheritance. It’s not like I need it.”
“And what about you Félix? I noticed you came to the ball alone.”
“I’m not on a deadline like you, although Mother is already on my back to find my own bride and settle down. Between you and me I think she just wants grandchildren.” Félix replied, although he did seem to be somewhat distracted by something in the crowd. “Who is that magnificent creature over there? The one in the bee mask?”
Adrien scanned the crowd. “Oh that’s Lady Chloé Bourgeois. I’ve known her since way back.”
“What’s she like?”
Adrien sized up his cousin. “She reminds me of you sometimes.”
Félix let out a laugh, earning himself a frown from the King. “Then she sounds right up my alley. Do you mind if I…” He indicated over to her.
“Be my guest, she’s all yours.”
“Then if you will excuse me, cousin.” He said with a low theatrical bow.
Adrien rolled his eyes and watched Félix make his way over to Chloé and engage her in conversation.
“I would like you to dance with Lady Lila.” Gabriel said, indicating to the woman who was exuding innocent sweetness, as she talked with the other guests. She was wearing an orange and white venetian mask to match the style of her dress. “People need to see you two together before we make the announcement.”
“As you wish.” Adrien replied, dropping his black mask
over his eyes and getting up to make his way to her. “May I have this dance, Lady Lila?” He said formally with a bow. Lila curtsied, enthusiastically accepting the offer. Adrien had to hold back a shudder at the coldness of her hand as he escorted her to the floor.
Guiding Lila into a waltz, Adrien tried to keep her at a distance as he went through the motions of the dance. She wore an orange and white venetian mask to match the dress she was wearing, and there were times Adrien felt her olive eyes could practically see through him. “I guess my father spoke to you today about the arrangements.” He said, looking down at her. He couldn’t bring himself to call it a marriage.
“Yes he did, I feel so honoured that your father chose me. I honestly thought I wouldn’t have stood a chance against Lady Kagami. You two do seem awfully close the other night.” Adrien got the feeling she was trying to start something with that, but he wasn’t in the mood to play.
“Kagami and I have known each other for a long time. My father is only interested in forming new alliances, and I am a humble servant to my country and my people.”
“Surely you want our marriage to work, Adrien. Unless you plan to simply shake hands with me when we say our vows.”
That mix of sarcasm and sultry was starting to get on his nerves. “Be under no illusions Lady Rossi, this will be a marriage in name only.”
Lila slid the hand she had on his shoulder up to the back of his neck and played with the soft hair at the back of his neck.
“I’m a patient woman, your Highness. You just need to get to know me better, that’s all.”
Kagami moved across the dancefloor over to where Lady Alya was as talking to Nino. Both had already noticed Adrien and his palpable discomfort.
“There is something strange about that one.” Kagami said.
“Have you heard the news about them?” Alya asked. Kagami nodded. “I must admit, I was shocked at the haste. The King was acting quite strange today too. I do believe he had been drinking.”
Kagami gave her a sharp look. “Are you sure? That doesn’t sound like him at all. In fact I’ve never seen the king anything but sober.”
“I can’t be certain, but after his meeting with Lila he stayed in his study for about half an hour and then came out, stumbling along the hall and holding his head.”
“Maybe he isn’t as on board with this marriage as we first thought.” Kagami mused.
“Second thoughts do you think?”
Kagami shook her head. “I’m not sure, but something doesn’t add up.
“Look.” Nino said, pointing to where the King had risen and was speaking to his assistant. “Do you think he is getting ready to make the announcement?”
“Maybe we could get her away from the Prince for a while and delay it.” Kagami suggested. She then turned and met Alya’s grin.
“I think I might have an idea.” She said confidently. “Follow my lead and be ready to move quickly.”
Swapping her half empty champagne flute for her beau’s full one, Alya made her way around the outskirts of the room before stumbling straight into Lila as she danced with the Prince, spilling the contents of the glass over Lila’s dress.
“Oh I’m so sorry.” Alya gushed, whipping a handkerchief out of her bodice and wiping Lila’s bosom with it. “I guess maybe I’ve had a few too many.”
Lila gritted her teeth, but tried to settle her seething anger, aware of the many eyes in the room on the situation. “No harm done.” She said with restraint. “If you would kindly excuse me, your highness.” Adrien nodded, trying not to show how relieved he was.
“Care for a dance your highness?” Kagami said, holding out her hand and giving Alya a wink. The brunette held up her empty glass to her in return and took Nino’s arm, heading out for a walk in the gardens.
“Why do I feel that was a conspiracy you pulled there.” Adrien mused as they fell into the familiar dance.
“It might be delaying the inevitable, but we wanted to give you a reprieve. How are you managing with her?” She asked once they were lost amongst the other couples.
“With Lila?” He said with a shudder. “I don’t know what it is about her, but something just rubs me the wrong way.”
“She’s sneaky too.” Kagami said in a low voice. “Her room last night was next to mine and she snuck out around the same time I did, but didn’t return until late.”
“Huh.” Adrien hummed, wondering where she could have gone at that time of night.
“What’s my father doing?” He asked her. Kagami looked subtlety over his shoulder and noted the King was exiting the ballroom with Nathalie. She relayed that information to Adrien. “Maybe he called it a night after all.” Adrien could only hope. His father had already stayed at the ball longer than he usually did.
The two continued to waltz in a comfortable silence until Adrien’s feet suddenly stopped moving and he froze where he stood, his eyes fixed in disbelief. Kagami looked in the direction he was staring and saw across the crowded room a woman dressed in a deep red gown and wearing a red mask on her face.
Marinette stood nervously at the edge of the ball room. She had entered the Palace by way of the sea and through the gardens so as to avoid the extra guards at the door. She didn’t usually mingle with large crowds when she was on the land as it made her nervous. Glancing at all the masked faces she wondered where the Prince might have been amongst them. She began to feel a little self conscious as more people began to notice her until her eyes locked with those of someone across the room.
Marinette felt her heart race faster in her chest as a man in a black mask approached her with dazzling emerald eyes and wild blond hair swept back. It could only belong to one person.
“You came.” He said to her, his face behind the mask in awe.
“How did you know it was me?” She asked, and he smiled softly at her.
“I would have known you anywhere my lady.” He said, taking her hand in his and bringing it to his lips to place a soft kiss. Marinette could feel her whole body tingling at the contact. “I can’t believe you’re here. I thought I might never see you again. How is this even possible?”
“Your highness.” She breathed heavily as he brought her closer to him. “I will explain everything but first I must tell you that I…”
Adrien placed a finger over her rose red lips. “Don’t say anything, just dance with me.” He placed a hand on her hip and took her hand in his other.
Marinette almost forgot how to breathe. “I don’t really know how to dance.” She admitted nervously.
“Then just follow my lead.” He smiled. “Trust me, no one will be looking at your feet anyway.”
Marinette gathered the edge of her dress into her free hand and let Adrien sweep her across the floor as the music from the orchestra swelled. She was aware of the chattering from those watching them, wondering who this mysterious woman in the red mask was that seemed to have captured the attention of the Prince, but right now she didn’t care. Everything and everyone else was forgotten as his eyes lingered on her.
“You know I never did find out your name.” He said, drawing her closer to him.
“Marinette.” She replied. “My name is Marinette.”
“Marinette.” He repeated as though it were a reverent prayer. “That’s beautiful, and so are you.” She felt her cheeks heat up under her mask as he continued. “Do you believe in fate?”
“I guess so.” She replied and he smiled.
“I do. I think it was fate that I saw you that night in the water and it was fate that I fell overboard and got to meet you. It’s like I’ve waited my whole life to find you.”
Marinette hadn’t realised how close the two of them had become during the course of the dance. Adrien’s face was so near to hers she could feel the warmth of his breath across her cheek and his lips became dangerously close to hers. Marinette closed her eyes and…
The sound of glass breaking shattered the bubble.
“Kim, we have one to go here.”
“I’m on it.” A tall guard said, picking up the protesting drunk man and slinging him over his shoulder before walking out the door.
“Your Highness…”
“Adrien.” He corrected her. “Please just call me Adrien.”
“Adrien. I can’t stay for long, but I need to talk to you. It’s important.”
Adrien could see that there was a look of trepidation in her eyes. “Come with me.” He said, lacing his fingers with hers and slipping them behind a curtain - a pair of Olive eyes watching them leave.
Adrien took Marinette through a secret passage that exited out near the garden fountain. The cooler air assaulted Marinette’s skin after the humidity of the ballroom and she shivered. Adrien slid off his coat jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders. “I guess you're not as used to the cold air.”
“The water in the reef is quite balmy I must admit.” She said, tucking her hair behind her ear. She could smell his cologne on the jacket as she pulled it closer around her.
“You live at the reef around that island?”
“Yes.”
“Alone.”
Marinette looked away from him. “Not entirely. I see other merfolk from time to time, and the Oracle Tikki.”
Adrien sat down on the edge of the fountain and invited Marinette to sit beside him, taking her hand into his as she did. “The Oracle? Does that have something to do with you being here now?”
Marinette nodded. “A long time ago, merpeople came under attack from the megalodon. Many were killed in the attacks. My father was afraid we might be wiped out altogether so some of us were brought to the Oracle and given the gift of immortality.”
“Your father? Is he a king?”
“Was.” She said quietly, averting her eyes at the painful memory. “He was so busy trying to save his people, he forgot to save himself along with my mother.”
Adrien gently touched her face and turned her eyes towards him. “I’m sorry.” He said, not really knowing what else to say. “And so how are you here now?”
“The Oracle grants me a temporary magic.” She said, touching the necklace around her neck, “and use my power to help people.”
Adrien shook his head. “I don’t understand.”
Marinette smiled at him patiently. She had never told anyone about herself before, but somehow she felt she could trust him. “Some merpeople are born with special gifts. Some have strength, others can see into the future. As for myself, I can heal the sick.”
“Heal the sick?” Adrien repeated, his eyes suddenly wide. “Marinette, my mother…”
“I know about your mother. That is why I am here. I only need a moment of time with her.”
Adrien pursed his lips. “My father has forbidden anyone from going near her chambers. Even me. He has a guard posted at the door at all times with strict instructions.”
“What if I talked to him?”
“Talk to my father? He would never believe you. Besides, that Lila keeps hanging about.” Marinette saw Adrien ball up his other hand before realising it again. “She a liar and a fake, but my father seems enamoured with her - or at least with the deal it will make once we are married.” He closed his eyes and looked away from her. “All he cares about is an alliance and safe passage for our trading ships.”
“There must be a way. What about the balconies?”
Adrien shook his head. “There is a guard in the courtyard… unless…”
Adrien stood up at the sound of voices and saw Nino walking through the gardens with Lady Alya on his arm. Maybe he could help. “Nino.” Adrien called out.
“Your Highness?” Nino responded, making his way with Alya over to the Prince. “Is something wrong?”
“I need to get in and see my mother. It’s of the utmost importance and needs to be completely confidential. I’m sure I can trust you with this Lady Alya.” He added, looking at the woman holding Nino’s arm.
“You can count me in.” She said enthusiastically.
Nino scratched the top of his head. “But your father has forbidden anyone from entering, even you and certainly not a stranger.” Nino looked over the woman whose hand the Prince seemed to be holding onto tightly.
“This is Marinette. I promise I will explain everything later, but this might be my only chance to save my mother. Please.”
Nino looked between the Prince and the girl. He didn’t really understand what he meant, but Nino had known Adrien since they were kids and he loved the guy like a brother. Taking out his pocket watch, Nino noted the time.
“There is a guard change due at 10pm. I can hold off the replacement for ten minutes. Would that work?”
Adrien looked to Marinette who nodded. “More than enough.”
The four of them made the plans before splitting back off into their respective pairs and heading in opposite directions, unaware that their conversation had been overheard.
~~~~~
Adrien and Marinette took the long way back into the main ballroom to avoid being seen. Wrapping his arm around her, Adrien led Marinette back into a waltz. King Gabriel had returned to his throne overseeing the event. Lady Lila had also returned, still in the same dress Alya had spilt the champagne on and immediately went up to the King. Gabriel nodded as she spoke, his face devoid of expression. When Lila finished speaking, she gave the King a low curtsy and walked back down the stairs with a smug look. The King then rose and exited from the ballroom again.
“What do you suppose that was about?” Adrien wondered out loud.
Before leaving the room, Lila locked eyes with Marinette. There was something in the other woman’s eyes that filled Marinette with dread. Lila gave her a sinister smirk before exiting the ballroom herself. “I don’t know.” She whispered, holding the Prince a little tighter. “But she makes me nervous, like she knows something.”
“Don’t worry Marinette”. Adrien assured her gently, “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“I’m not worried about myself.” Marinette said, looking up at him as they continued to dance. “But I have a bad feeling.”
Adrien looked up at the clock on the wall. It was almost ten. “We need to meet Nino and go to my mother.”
Taking Marinette by the hand, Adrien led them through the ballroom and out into the main foyer.
“Wait.” Marinette said. Adrien paused and watched her as she slipped off the shell bracelet from her wrist and tied it onto his own wrist. “I want you to have this. It’s a little something to remember me by.”
Adrien looked over the almost translucent shell and felt a warmth run all through him, but also a touch of sadness.
“After this, will I never see you again?”
Marinette smiled at him, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “You will always find me, where the sun meets the sea.”
Before Adrien could say anything more, they heard scurried footsteps on the floor above them. Gathering up her dress, Marinette followed Adrien up the stairs and down a long corridor. Towards the other end of the palace. Adrien stopped along the edge of the wall and looked around. The area was dimly lit and seemed empty, the footsteps from earlier gone.
“That’s my mother's chambers. I don’t see Nino though.” He whispered. Behind them, the heavy footsteps of boots echoed through the hallway.
“You only have a few minutes.” Nino said a little out of breath as he handed Adrien a set of keys. “I’ll wait for you back in the ballroom.”
Taking the keys, Adrien opened the door to the Queen’s room. There were no lights except for the crackling fire that burned earnestly. Adrien walked straight over to his mother and removed the mask from his face, Marinette doing the same with her red mask. “Mother.” He said quietly. “Mother, there is someone I want you to meet.”
Suddenly the lights in the chamber turned up brightly and there was the scuffling of feet as Marinette was manhandled by the King’s personal guards. Adrien stood up ready to order them to stop when his father appeared from the balcony, accompanied by none other than Lila.
“I had to see it with my own eyes.” Gabriel said with barely concealed anger. “That my own son had been duped by a treacherous Syren pretending to be a mermaid.”
“I’m not a Syren.” Marinette pleaded. “Please your Majesty I can explain.”
“Clearly you used deception and magic to get yourself here tonight.” Gabriel cut her off. “Lady Lila overheard you convincing my son with your lies, praying on his kind heart and love for his mother. What were you planning to do to her?
“My powers are to heal, not harm” Marinette protested.
“Father please…” Adrien tried to intervene, but Gabriel only shut him down.
“Silence!” Gabriel commanded. “I have seen and heard enough. You would do well to thank Lady Lila for her assistance. With her knowledge she would recognise a real mermaid if she were one. No doubt this is the same person who broke in here the other evening and Lady Lila informed me tonight her own chamber had been broken into. I will not abide threats to my wife or your future one because of a jealous female.” He then turned to Lila. “My eternal gratitude.” Gabriel said to the young woman.
“No need to thank me, your majesty.” Lila said with a sickening smile. “It was my duty to warn you when I overheard her deception.”
Lila gave the King a low curtsy and as she did so her necklace slipped out of her dress.
“Your necklace, it’s a foxtail.” Marinette exclaimed, recognising it as the same one she had seen at the wharf. Lila flinched momentarily before recovering herself and tucking the necklace away.
“What’s it to you?”
“I saw that last night. You were on the docks with the Pirate XY. I saw you buy a vial of poison from him.”
Lila gasped with offense. “How dare you accuse me of such an atrocious thing. Exactly as I told you, your Majesty, lies and manipulation.”
Gabriel then also stepped in. “Enough. I will not have you make such an accusation against my son’s bride. Guards, take her away.”
Adrien was left powerless as the guards unceremoniously wrangled Marinette out the door amid her protests.
“Father, you need to listen to her…”
“That’s quite enough out of you, Adrien.” Gabriel spoke vehemently. “How can you be so easily manipulated by such a creature? You need to remember your place and I believe you owe your future bride an apology.”
“Marinette isn’t a creature.” Adrien said angrily. “You don’t understand who she is or what she means to me.”
“Clearly you are incapable of making your own decisions. I have already drawn up and signed the marriage contract. You should be grateful I stepped in when I did.”
“That wasn’t the deal.” Adrien fumed. “Besides, I already know who I want to marry.”
”That is enough.” Gabriel growled. He looked over and saw the pained look on his wife’s face. “Look at the distress you are causing your mother. I will not listen to any more of your nonsense and delusions. Your mind has been clearly poisoned by her.”
“You are wrong father.” Adrien insisted, staring his father down. “And I will prove you wrong.”
With that he turned and walked out of the room, despite his father demanding he return to him at once.
~~~~~
Making his way back into the ballroom, Adrien found Ladies Alya and Kagami, explaining the situation to them. Alya was shocked at Lila’s tall tales, although Kagami seemed less surprised.
“What are you going to do?” Kagami asked. “I’ve heard of XY. He’s ruthless and corrupt. He won’t tell you anything.”
“Maybe not to me.” Adrien said mysteriously. “But I know someone who might get it out of him.”
Adrien went to leave when Alya called him back. “Sir.” She said, “If I can help in any way…”
“I will too.” Kagami added. “You know I’m here for you Adrien.”
Adrien grabbed one of their hands each in his. “Thank you, both of you. I should be back within the hour but if my father returns, cover for me.” With that he slipped behind the curtain.
Grabbing his cloak, Adrien took the secret passage again, taking another path that brought him undetected outside of the palace walls, close by to the wharf. There he found Luka on board his ship.
“I need to find the Pirate XY.” He said urgently. Luka was naturally confused by that request.
“Well last I saw his first mate was drinking him under the table in the tavern. Forgive me for asking though, but why would you want to talk to that kind of scum?”
“I need to find out something about Lady Lila. She has convinced my father that Marinette was trying to harm my mother.”
“Hold up your highness, whose Marientte?”
Adrien had forgotten that Luka wasn’t at the ball. “She’s the woman I love.” Adrien said with conviction. “But my father has chosen Lila for me unless I can prove she is lying.”
“So you did find your missing melody at the ball after all.” Luka smiled at the slight blush that graced the Prince’s face.
“I can’t lose her Luka. I need your help with this.” He took a deep breath. Luka was one of his trusted friends and maybe the only person who might believe him. “She’s a Mermaid, Luka, she came to help save my mother.”
“A mermaid?” Luka said thoughtfully, nodding his head. Growing up on his mother’s ship, he of course had heard many tales and sea shanties about these magical creatures of the sea. He had never seen one for himself, but he had no reason to question their existence. “I believe you.”
Adrien’s shoulders relaxed. “Thank you.”
“I’ve heard rumors about XY selling a mermaid some time back on the black market. I’m not sure if it was true or not.” Luka then clapped a hand onto Adrien’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, you know you can count on me. Do you want me to get my boys to rough him up a bit.”
“Not yet.” Adrien cautioned. “We need something concrete. Go to the tavern and watch him. If he does anything suspicious, bring him to me.”
Luka nodded, calling his first mate, Ivan, to join him to watch XY and Adrien made his way back to the palace. By now it was nearing almost 11pm. Adrien knew time was running against them if they wanted to help his mother. Making another appearance into the ballroom to find Kagami and Alya, Adrien noted his father back on his throne.
“How long has my father been back?” Adrien asked them.
“Not that long.” Kagami replied. “He was looking for you. I told him you had gone outside to get some air. I don’t think he bothered to check.”
Gabriel soon noticed Adrien had returned and beckoned for his son to come to him. There was still a fair few people dancing and drinking in the ballroom, too many to cause a scene by refusing.
Adrien held his head high and approached his father, giving him a formal bow. Gabriel seemed pleased at his son's compliance. “Come and sit beside me, son. We shall make the announcement soon. Lady Lila has just gone to change her attire.”
“What are you going to do with Marinette?” Adrien asked his father.
“I wouldn’t concern yourself with her.” Gabriel said curtly. “She will be dealt with accordingly.”
Adrien wasn’t sure what his father meant by that, but he knew for a fact that whatever it was, Lila would have a hand in it.
Meanwhile in the holding cells, Nino had all but given up trying to talk down the guard that was patrolling the jail.
“I’m sorry Nino.” Max replied. “But I can’t afford to lose this job. I’m travelling to the inventors fair next week and I need to pay for the voyage.”
Nino ran a hand down his face. “Max, you won’t lose your job. The Prince will make sure of that. You need to let her go.”
Max shook his head, trying to stifle a yawn. “No offense Nino, but the Prince isn’t the one in charge, and right now neither are you. I’m under the king’s direct orders. I’m sorry.” Max slung his musket over his shoulder and went outside to stand guard out the front.
“Ugh, it’s hopeless.” Nino walked over to Marinette who was looking at him through the small grill in the door.
“Thank you for trying.” Marinette said, wanting to reassure him.
“Keep your chin up.” Nino said to her. “I’m not giving up yet I’ll go check up on Adrien.” With that he left.
A few moments later another, less welcome visitor came to Marinette’s cell door. Lila had changed her dress to a white gown, obviously in preparation for the wedding announcement.
“I demand you let me see her at once.” Lila commanded.
“I’m not to let anyone in here.” Max replied.
“Do you know who I am?” Lila retorted. “I am the betrothed of the Prince, and soon I will be your Queen. Now let me pass.”
Marinette stepped back from the door and pressed her back against the stone wall. “What do you want?” She asked, her voice cracking a little under her vulnerability.
“You out of my way.” Lila seethed. “You clearly don’t understand how the world really works Mermaid.”
“But why would you want to harm the Queen? What had she ever done to you?”
Lila cocked her eyebrow at her. “Done? She hasn’t done anything. Personally I don’t even know the woman.” Marinette furrowed her eyebrows in confusion and Lila laughed at her.
“You don’t get it do you? I just needed to make the King paranoid enough that he would want to rush through the marriage as fast as possible. Plus, a little added help didn’t hurt.” She held up between her fingers the small vial she had bought from XY. “He was very generous in his contract that was signed today. Adrien won’t even know what hit him. And when I produce that precious heir, all this kingdom will be mine and I won’t let some fish from the sea get in my way.”
With that she turned and sautéed away, stopping just by the exit. “Oh, and by the way. I sent a message for a friend to come by and pick you up. Don’t worry though, he has plenty of buyers waiting to snap up something like you.”
Marinette grabbed the bars on the door and stared the other woman down. “The Prince knows you can’t be trusted. You won’t get away with this.”
Lila looked over her shoulder smugly. “Oh, I already have.”

Adrien pulled his cravat away from his neck as he watched the clock on the wall. He knew time was starting to run out for Marinette, and for his mother. He saw Nino among the crowd, but when he caught his eye, Adrien deflated when Nino shook his head. Alya and Kagami both seemed eager to try and do something, but Nino convinced them it would be no good.
Shortly afterwards, Lila came back. Her white gown sparkled under the grand chandelier as she swept her way across the room and took a seat next to the Prince. “I hope you're not planning on us marrying tonight?” Adrien said through his teeth. Lila simply giggled.
“Of course not, I would need at least until tomorrow afternoon to get everything organised.”
“What?” Adrien gasped, turning to his father. “Tomorrow?”
“Why delay.” Gabriel said flatly. “The sooner we get everything completed the better.” Gabriel stood up and indicated to the orchestra to stop playing. The guests stopped dancing and chatting, moving closer to where the King was about to speak.
“Ladies and gentlemen.” Gabriel began, clearing his throat. “I want to thank you for joining us here tonight. I know that many of you ladies have traveled from far and wide and I hope that our alliances and good will hold fast well into the future. However, I have but only one son, and his choice for only one bride. And so it is with pleasure…”
Gabriel’s speech was suddenly disrupted by a loud ruckus outside the ballroom door. The crowd soon made way and Luka entered the room. Behind him was Ivan dragging a protesting XY with them.
“What is the meaning of this?” Gabriel demanded, his face almost red with fury.
“Forgive me your Majesty.” Luka said with a quick bow. “But this could not wait. I have been observing the Pirate XY tonight at the local tavern when he received this missive.” Luka handed the King a note and noticed Lila squirming as he continued. “We followed XY and when he breached the Palace walls we took him into our custody and brought him in.”
Gabriel opened the note and read its contents.
** I have a valuable package for you that should fetch. She should get you a nice price. Collect her before midnight, the guard should be easy enough to overpower if he hasn’t already fallen asleep. She can be a bit feisty, so use something to knock her out.
Love, your Fox **
“I didn’t realise you consorted with pirates, Lady Rossi.” Gabriel said coldly, glaring down his nose at her.
“I have no idea what you are talking about.” Lila exclaimed, standing up and backing away. “This doesn’t prove anything and I have never met this man before in my life.”
“Yes you did.” Adrien interjected. “Marinette said she saw you, she recognised your necklace.”
“Aww, come on baby *hiccup* don’t be like that.” XY slurred. “Besides, you promised me my payment *hiccup* for helping you.”
There was murmuring around the room, and Lila was scrambling to keep her credibility.
“Your Majesty, you would take the word of a criminal and a drunkard?” Lila pleaded.
“No.” Gabriel said slowly and deliberately. “I will take the word of my son, which I should have done in the first place.” Gabriel looked his son in the eyes. “You were right Adrien. I’m sorry.”
The crowd watching let out a collective aww as the King embraced the Prince. Sniffing an opportunity to escape, Lila tried to slip away only to come face first into Nino who was flanked by Kagami and Alya.
“Guards.” Nino called. “Take them away.”
Lila shouted her protests as her and XY were dragged unceremoniously from the ballroom. The orchestra struck up again, and the guests resumed dancing and talking as they were before.
Adrien ran over to Luka and embraced him. “You're almost out of time.” The sea Captain said to the Prince. “You need to hurry.”
Adrien then approached his father who was looking a little worse for wear after realising he had been duped. “Father, I know you don’t believe me, but Marinette can help mother. Please give her a chance.”
Gabriel looked down into his son’s hopeful face and nodded his head. “Go and get her. I’ll meet you in your mother’s room. Nino.” He called the guard. “I’ll leave you in charge here with Nathalie. Make sure all the guests find their way out safely.”
In her cell the ticking of time was weighing heavily on Marinette. She had heard a scuffle take place in the courtyard and a man in a bandana confronted what sounded like XY before the pirate was carted off by a larger man. It had been silent since then except for the chiming of the town clock for 11:45pm.
Now, she had resigned herself to fate. Sitting on the floor against the wall, Marinette hugged her legs (for as long as they were going to last) against her chest. In the distance she could hear the scurrying of footsteps. They were getting louder as they approached her location. “Max, open the door and let her out.”
Marinette thought her heart might leap out of her chest when she heard his voice.
“But your Highness, the King said…”
“Just do it Max. That’s an order!”
Scrambling to her feet, Marinette ran to the door and saw the Prince running to her with Max fumbling to find the right key.
“Marinette.” He called out to her, and as the door opened Adrien wrapped her up into a tight hug.
“Adrien.” She cried into his shoulder, and he ran his fingers through her hair, kissing the top of her head. There was no time though to savour the moment. “We don’t have much time.”
Reaching the Queen’s chamber as quickly as they could, they found Gabriel already waiting for them. He still seemed to have had an air of suspicion about him and watched on with reserved caution as Marinette approached his wife. “Your Majesty.” Marinette said softly, taking the Queen’s hand into hers. “I’m going to place my hands on your chest. You might feel a tingling sensation, but I promise there will be no pain. Will you trust me?”
Marinette felt the Queen’s hand weakly squeeze hers. Placing both hands now on the Queen's chest Adrien and Gabriel watched on as a light began to grow, brighter and brighter until it radiated all over Emilie’s body. Adrien had to shield his eyes from the light, but once it dissipated Marinette stood back and allowed the King room to come closer to his wife.
Gabriel held Emilie’s hand and softly called her name. The Queen’s eyes began to flicker until she opened them fully and Marinette saw that Adrien clearly had his mother’s emerald eyes.
Crying out with joy, Gabriel scooped Emilie into his arms and Adrien ran over to join them. The family collapsed back onto the bed, tears and laughter filling the room.
As the clock ticked ever closer to midnight, Marinette began to feel her feet start to tingle. Satisfied that all was well in the world, and Adrien finally had his mother back and was free from his obligations, she quietly slipped out the door.
“Oh Adrien, I have missed seeing your face.” Emilie said, cupping both her hands around his cheeks. “You found a cure.”
“I found more than that Mother.” He said, happy tears staining his cheeks. “I want to introduce you to her.”
When Adrien looked behind him though, the room was empty.
“Where did she go?” Gabriel asked as Adrien frantically ran to the balcony. There he saw a streak of red running across the courtyard.
“Marinette, wait!” He yelled out. She stopped momentarily to look up at him, but as the clock began its first strike of midnight she took off again.
Racing down the grand staircase, Adrien pushed his way past the left over stragglers from the ball and out into the courtyard. Tripping over the stones on the garden path, he picked himself up chasing the hint of red he could see through the trees.
“Marinette!” He called again, but as he reached the shoreline, all he found was a trail of footprints leading into the water and the moon glistening on the ocean as it lapped the sand.

Over the following days, Emilie became stronger and a renewed happiness began to fill the Agreste Palace. Gabriel had even started coming down stairs in the mornings to join Adrien for breakfast. As happy as Adrien was that his family was back to how it used to be, he couldn’t help the clench in his heart when he looked out of the window at the ocean. She was out there, no doubt back on her Island reef, safe and away from those who might want to harm her.
“Good morning.” Emilie’s sweet voice echoed through the dining hall. Adrien jumped up to give his mother a warm hug. “How is my Kitten this morning?” She asked him, brush back his messy hair even though he was now taller than her.
“Mother, I’m not ten anymore.” Adrien chuckled, ruffling his hair back up. Gabriel kissed the back of his wife’s hand and guided her to her seat.
“You are feeling well, my dear?”
“Much Gabriel. I feel good as new. Reborn even.” She replied. “However, I was doing some interesting reading this morning. Nathalie?”
The Agreste assistant entered the dining hall carrying a document in her hand. Passing it to the King, he looked at the heading and groaned. “Oh, you mean the marriage contract? Please just destroy that now, we won’t be needing it.”
“I intend to destroy it.” Emilie said emphatically. “I was just wondering what your reasoning was in signing over our entire kingdom over to Lady Rossi?”
Gabriel gave her a confused look. Nathalie opened the document, finding the page and pointing out the relevant passage. There it was, in Gabriel’s own hand, an additional clause stating that on the birth of an heir, Gabriel would stand down as regent in favour of his son, however, should anything happen to Adrien after that, Lila would be named Regent until the child was of age.
“I don’t remember writing this.” Gabriel protested at his wife’s skeptical look. “I would never consider such an option.”
“Sir, I believe Lady Rossi made use of a sedative.” Nathalie said, taking a small vial from her pocket. “Captain Couffaine confirmed that the Pirate XY procured this vial at the behest of Lady Rossi. The local apocrathy confirmed its contents.”
Gabriel was in both measure confused and embarrassed that he had been hoodwinked as he read over the document he had every intention of burning. From the corner of her eye, Emilie saw Adrien leave the table and lean on his forearms at the window, overlooking the ocean. She recognised the melancholy and longing in his expression.
Adrien had spent the last few nights sitting on the end of her bed and telling her about the girl that had saved her life. It saddened her immensely that she didn’t get to thank her personally, but it saddened her even more seeing her son’s broken heart.
Standing up, she went over to him and placed her hands on his shoulders. “You love her, don’t you?” She asked, even though she could see the answer in his eyes.
“With all my heart.” Adrien replied simply, twisting the shell bracelet she had given him around his wrist. Gabriel huffed from the table.
“She’s a mermaid, Adrien.” He said, maybe a little more harshly than he intended.
“Gabriel.” Emilie shided him.
“But you can’t change facts Emilie.”
“Oh, like the fact you were most insistent that Lila would make the perfect wife for our son?”
Gabriel grumbled, giving the discarded marriage document to Nathalie to throw into the fireplace.
“How exactly would it work? Besides, I’ve already told him I don't want him out on ships anymore.”
Adrien dropped his head, but his mother gave his arm a squeeze. “I think that if you truly believe in your heart, then anything is possible. Besides Gabriel, if you want safe passage through the trading straight, wouldn’t an ally in the ocean be rather beneficial?”
Gabriel’s mouth practically dropped open. “You can’t be serious Emilie! She… she’s a mermaid.”
Emilie gave Gabriel a pointed look and Gabriel folded his arms before letting out a defeated sigh. He might be King of the land, but she was definitely Queen of the house.
“Very well Adrien. You can go and look for your mermaid, but be sure to take Nino with you.”
Adrien couldn’t contain his happiness, surprising his father with a hug before hugging his mother too and running out of the room because he knew exactly where to find her.
Out in the gardens, Adrien found Nino with Lady Alya. Nino was taking a well earned break and they were enjoying a picnic breakfast.
“Nino, hurry up.”
“Am I going somewhere?” Nino asked as Adrien practically ran past them.
“We’re getting Marinette.” Adrien called over his shoulder.
“What now? Where would we even find her?”
Adrien turned, running backward. “Where the sun meets the sea.” He yelled back, his happiness almost infectious. Nino didn’t have a clue what that was supposed to mean.
“You better run.” Alya laughed, giving Nino a push.

Sitting on the warm sand of her Island, Marinette collected shells and strung them onto string to make a new bracelet. She had given her pink pearl back to the Oracle, her heart full with the memories of dancing with the Prince at the ball. He had his mother back, and his arranged marriage was stopped.
Marinette placed down the bracelet and looked out over the sunset. Colours of deep orange and gold dancing on the rolling break. She splashed her tail up and down in the warm water. She had done what she had set out to do and she only hoped that he would live a long and prosperous life with someone he loved.
Picking up a handful of sand, Marinette let it fall and be caught up in the breeze, looking at it sparking on her hand in the light. It reminded her of the stars in the sky when she sat with the prince at the fountain. Closing her eyes, she let the warmth of the sun wash over her. She could almost still hear his voice when he had called her name when she ran back to the water.
Suddenly opening her eyes, Marinette realised the sound she could hear wasn’t a memory at all.
“Marinette!”
Adrien waved frantically at her from the quarterdeck before standing up on the edge and diving straight into the water as Luka and Nino cheered him on. As he reached the beach, Marinette threw herself into his arms and held him tight.
“You came back.” She said, burying her face into the crook of his neck.
“Of course I came back.” He declared, pulling back and holding her face in his hands. “I love you Marinette. I will always come back for you.”
“And I’ll always be right here waiting for you.” She smiled. Adrien wasn’t sure if it was the sea water or tears rolling down her cheeks. “Because I love you too.”
Within an instant his lips were on hers. The taste of sea salt on his tongue and a warmth growing in his heart as she kissed him back with equal fervor. Adrien felt as though he had found the missing part of himself, and for the first time in his life, he felt whole.
As they kissed, Marinette became engulfed in a white light. The two of them were so wrapped up in each other they had no idea of the miraculous event happening around them. When they finally parted for air and looked into each other’s eyes, Marinette became aware of the feeling of sand between her toes… wait toes!
Marinette rolled onto her back and lifted a leg into the air, wiggling her toes in the sunlight. Her long pink tail now gone, and her body clothed in a shimmering pink swimsuit with a short flowing skirt.
“Your tail, it’s gone”. Adrien exclaimed.
“I don’t understand.” Marinette said, kneeling up out of the water and admiring her new outfit. At that moment, a red headed mermaid emerged out of the water with a sweet smile on her face. “Great Tikki.” Marinette practically shouted. “But how?” She asked, waving her hands up and down her transformed body.
“Because of your selfless kindness in saving others before helping yourself I have granted you your greatest wish.” The wise Oracle said, holding up the pink pearl necklace to her. “The magic works both ways. Come visit whenever you like.”
Tikki then approached the Prince and pointed to his bracelet. “May I?” She asked. Adrien nodded and she infused the shell with the same magic so that he could join her. “Take good care of her, Prince Adrien.”
“I promise I will.” He vowed to the Oracle. “Every day of my life.”
Setting sail homeward bound, Marinette stood steadfast with Adrien on the quarterdeck and farewelled Tikki as the ship headed into the sunset. Behind her the sun was setting on her old life, and ahead of her was the dawn of a new future that was yet unwritten, but she felt secure in the strong arms that held her tight and the warm lips that told her she was finally home.
