Work Text:
Morgan didn’t mean to eat the whole cake.
It just sorta. . . happened.
One minute they were all running around outside playing pin the tail on the donkey, and the next thing Morgan knew, Alex’s Mommy was ushering them back inside to watch High School Musical.
Alex was Morgan’s best friend, and Morgan knew that High School Musical was Alex’s favorite movie, but Morgan just didn’t have the at-ten-tion span to watch it anymore. Not after the four billionth time in a row.
It was around the scene in the cafeteria when they all started singing again that Morgan decided they could play ninja for a little bit.
Morgan very, very quietly got off their bean bag chair and started making their way to the corner of the room where the cake was. It wouldn’t hurt to eat just a bit—
—and then there was no more cake.
Uh oh.
Quickly, Morgan went to the bathroom and started washing their hands and face. They’d stolen cake from Mommy and Daddy’s “secret cabinets” enough times to know how to hide it. It didn’t even take a very long time— the movie was still playing and everyone was still going between singing and talking.
Morgan’s tummy started hurting around the time Alex’s Mommy made a loud noise, but they didn’t want to leave the bathroom yet. What if they got sick? Then everyone would know they ate the cake.
Eventually, the door creaked open, and Alex peeked in. “Morgan?”
“Mm?” Morgan hummed, not having noticed they’d drifted off in the corner of the bathroom.
“The movie’s almost over. Are you feeling better? There’s a piñata.”
The ache in Morgan’s tummy disappeared in an instant. “A piñata?” Morgan parroted, scrambling to their feet.
Alex nodded, holding the door open for their friend. “Yeah. Daddy had to take Bandit to the vet cause he ate all the cake, but he’s gonna come back with a new one. It won’t have any of the characters on it but Mommy promised they’re gonna try and get my name written on it anyway—”
Morgan happily let Alex drag them through the house back to the party. Even if they messed up, they still had their best friend.
Morgan would always be there for Alex too. It was only fair.
