Chapter Text
After almost a year, it was the first time that his father was coming back home, Yuu couldn’t stop smiling and talking about it at school to his friends, after all, he had always been very close to him, even after Guren was called back into the army, even after his parents divorced and he spent most of his life with his other father.
Even though Guren was most of the times on the other side of earth, he always made sure to talk to his kid at least three times a day, always made sure to be there for the big events in his kid’s life, he would almost always answer his calls even after a long shift or if he’d call in the middle of the night. Guren was there even when he wasn’t but it didn’t change the fact that Yuu missed him insanely all the time.
“Dad come on, we’re gonna be late, let’s get going!” Yuu whined while his father was still getting ready.
“The plane hasn’t even landed yet and you know, he could take a taxi to get here” Shinya shrugged while he kept on fixing his hair.
“You are so mean to him! He hasn’t been here in almost a year, don’t you miss him?” the fifteen years old got closer to his dad that remained silent for a few seconds, sighing heavily.
“If he’d quit his shit ass job we wouldn’t be here missing him all the time” he rolled his eyes annoyed.
Guren and Shinya had known each other ever since they were teenagers, both them being competitive was something that made them compete against each other but somehow it brought them closer and closer as time went by. Shinya had always adored him, there was something about Guren that made him think that perhaps, people weren’t all bad, that there was someone able to bring hope into someone’s life and Guren was exactly that to him. They had started dating when they were nineteen, hiding it from everyone, they had joined the army with a bunch of other friends, they had created their little family but, battle after battle, Guren had started to grow colder, his smile had started to fade away, he’d be caught zoning out in the middle of meetings, it was as if he was slowly losing himself. He had found their kid when they were twenty-one years old, it was during a mission, Yuu was just a kid, around five years old and he had attached himself to Guren from the beginning, Guren had found it slightly annoying, Shinya had found it absolutely adorable because, even though Guren would try to act as if he didn’t care, Shinya knew him well enough to know that he’d do anything to keep that kid safe and by his side.
They had taken a little break from the army, they had gotten married, Yuu was officially their son, their life went out smoothly, they were happy, their kid was growing up healthy and happy, they’d do their best to raise him better than the way the two of them had been brought up and everything had started to seem as if it was perfect, until his husband started to eat less, smile less, he’d be out at work until late at night and at first Shinya didn’t mind it, after all Guren was a trauma doctor in a busy ER, but after three years he had started to grow tired of waiting and waiting, of not knowing what was going on with his husband, he was sick and tired of all the excuses and all the lies, so he had asked for a divorce, thinking that it’d be like a wake up call for Guren, but he simply had signed the papers and had left with the army once again.
It had been five years ever since they had divorced and they had learned how to make it work, for the sake of their kid, they had mutual respect for one another and they still cared deeply for each other, it was like when they used to be just friends, they had a good relationship, their family dynamics worked well, besides those nights were Shinya wished to have him as his husband, not as his ex, not as his friend, those nights he wanted his lover back and he wondered if Guren ever felt the same.
They were outside the airport, Shinya was laying against his gray car while his kids was a bit ahead of him, looking for his father’s face in the crowd of people, he could barely stay still, way to excited to finally see him. He knew it was wrong, but sometimes, Shinya would feel jealous of their relationship, he knew that Guren was his favorite.
“Dad?! Dad!” the kid ran towards a tall black haired man dressed in his usual army uniform. He saw him smile brightly before dropping the bag on the ground and hugging tightly the boy, they hugged each other for quite a while, then Yuu picked up the bag even though his father tried to stop him, then they started to walk towards Shinya as they chitchatted. He hated how his heart was beating so fast, how he still felt butterflies whenever he’d see him.
“Hi there, Ichinose” Shinya moved from the car and Guren raised an eyebrow.
“Hello to you too, Ichinose” he smiled at him, after all, Shinya had never changed his last name back to Hiiragi.
