The Aftermath of World War Six

Summary:

Written for class in late 2014 or early 2015. Cross-posted to FictionPress.com.

Work Text:

There was a time when war,
Was just a game we played as kids.
But that was before the world went to war,
And when there is a war, you need soldiers.
And when you run out of soldiers,
What do you do?

You turn to the kids,
And if you're old enough,
You’ll go and fight over there.

How were we supposed to fight
When we are just some teens?
Giving orders to friends and colleagues.
How were we supposed to give the orders that kill?
Sending our friends to their deaths.

Now I look at my little brother,
And it makes me sad and blue.
He wants me to play with me,
But that I can not do.
I want to play the game with him.
I can’t play and I feel so bad.

But if a play with him,
I just go back to those days.
I can’t teach him to run or roll,
Or help him with his tactics.
I can’t teach him to shoot and hunt,
Or what older siblings do.

Kids shouldn’t have to fight,
Wars are for adults.
But when you put kids in there,
They will never be the same.
We just want kids again,
But we never will be able to.
We’ll never have the childhood we deserve.
No kid deserves this,
To have your childhood taken from you.
