Chapter Text
You tapped your foot against the back seat of the car. You were moving to a new home. You and your mom did that a lot. After your dad died... That was too depressing to think about now.
This was a new opportunity! A chance to reinvent yourself. The place you were moving to was the place your mom and dad grew up. A little island in the middle of nowheresville California.
"Come on, cheer up Y\N!" Your mom called to you from the front seat. "You'll love it there! There are trees and plants and birds! I know you'll like it there! Please, just cheer up. For me?"
You faked a smile from the back seat. Why did you have to leave (your town)? You had even managed to make some friends, and now your mom was tearing that all away from you.
You stared out the window, longing for the car to turn around. Slowly, you drifted off to sleep.
Your mom was shaking you awake.
"Y\N! Wake up! We have to walk the rest of the way!"
Walk?! It was bad enough you had to move, but now you had to carry all your junk on foot? This day just couldn't get any worse.
After what felt like hours of walking in silence, your mom broke it.
"I recognize this path! Quick Y\N! Close your eyes!" Your mom said, grabbing your shoulders to tell you that she would guide you.
You reluctantly closed them, knowing that when you opened them, you would be in any other suburban neighborhood.
"Alright, you can open them!" Your mom said, letting go of your shoulders.
You opened them, not finding a suburb, but something that dropped your jaw in amazement.
"See Y\N? I told you. Welcome to sunny Living Island, the place of my youth!"
You'd never wondered what your parent's life was like before they had you. Until now. The place was filled with colors and animals that seemed to walk around on two feet. Were you dreaming? Was this all a fantasy your brain had made up? You pinched yourself. Yep, this was very real.
"You alright there, Y\N?"
"What? Yeah, of course."
"I know it can be a little shocking the first time. You should've seen the first time your great Uncle Brian saw it!"
A little shocking? You were in a Technicolor dreamscape! Yeah, it was a little shocking.
A large lizard-like thing came up to you and mom. You hid behind her and clutched onto her shirt like a little kid.
"Oh my gosh, is that you Susan?" The thing said to your mom. "and who's that behind you?"
The thing had a southern accent. You buried your face in your mom's shoulder.
"Pufnstuf! Oh my gosh, I haven't seen you in forever! This is Y\N!"
"Nice to meet you Y\N!" Pufnstuf said, reaching his hand out to you.
You lifted your face a bit, then put it back down.
"They're a little shy."
"Mom, can we go?" You whispered in your mom's ear.
"It was really nice to see you, but think it's time to go. Let's catch up later, okay?" Your mom said, hearing your plight.
The house you were going to be staying in for the foreseeable future was a fixer-upper for sure.
"Mom, why did we buy this house again?"
"Well, it was the house I grew up in, and the photos showed in much better condition." Your mom said looking at her phone.
"There's no way we can live here. We're gonna freeze just being in here one night!"
"Well, if we're not going to stay here, where are going to stay?"
"Who was your friend again? Pufn-something? We could stay with him for the night."
"Fine, let's just leave our stuff here."
You dropped your heavy bags. They made a thud as they hit the ground. You started to walk away.
"Hey, do these belong to someone?"
You turned around, you saw a frog girl standing there in a tuxedo. She was pointing at your bags. Her brown eyes sparkled in the setting sun.
"Oh, those are ours!" You said.
"Wow, I would have never thought such mundane bags would belong to such a beautiful person!"
"Thank you so much but we really should be going!" Your mom butted in.
Your mom pulled you away as you stared at the beautiful girl. She waved at you. Your heart skipped a beat. You hoped you would see her tomorrow.
You couldn't sleep that night. You couldn't stop thinking about her beautiful eyes. You sat up. You looked around. No one else was awake. You stood up and walked outside. You took out a notebook and pen from your pocket. You started writing.
Dear (your best friend),
I'm in love. I think I might have found "the one". She's so cute! One thing, she's a frog. I wish you were here right now. I could use your love advice. I want to go home. This place is really weird. I hope to see you soon,
Y\N
You dozed off on the bench you were sitting on.
