The Presence of Distance

Summary:

Almost two decades after the defeat of Grima, the Shepherds have settled down into lives of peace. But a discovery in the north threatens to reopen old wounds, and drag them all back to a past they have no desire to revisit.

Notes:

The title of both this fic and its chapters are taken from a playlist I made many moons ago, originally intended as a general playlist for the future children, which can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/user/frommfilm/playlist/4UyvEjujp7dDKEojaiqjG7. It's not required listening by any means, though the first and last songs have particular relevance.

Chapter 1: Extract

Chapter Text

[An extract from the memoirs of the tactician Robin.]

It is widely, and not entirely erroneously, thought that after the defeat of Grima, I retired for good, living a life of luxury and never acting as a tactician again. This is not surprising, since the one occasion on which I came out of retirement is known only to a few, who have been implicitly sworn to secrecy. It is true that unrecognised sacrifices are no less noble, and perhaps even more so, but I cannot deny that it has often seemed unjust to me that so few know how much was lost on that fateful occasion.
