“ohhh... the rain’s getting heavier!”
a boy thinks as he runs through the empty shopping district, zipping through the long stretch of closed shops. the lack of shelter is inconvenient, as droplets of water bleed onto his jacket. some make direct contact with his skin, at places where the jacket seams were hanging by a thread, literally.
the uneven and wet ground makes him stumble, but he gets back on his feet and continues his pace. he’s sure he feels water seeping into his sneakers from the front, where his socks have a new wet spot.
he squints his eyes. the flickering street lights makes it harder to see clearly, but the glow of lighting coming from inside the houses helps a little. the sights of people in the house are more pronounced too,
but he doesn’t think too much of it right now.
“gotta go quick! gotta go quick!” he repeats to himself.
the sounds of laughter from the nearby house makes him slow to a stop, nearing the end of the street where the road splits. he stares at the house, and feels his chest pulls tight. An image of a young boy comes to mind, and a sad smile accompanies it. his hands unknowingly slip into his pocket and squeezes the set square that rests there, safe from the rain.
it’s his most important item after all.
…
and regretfully, the only thing he took with him.
“…”
“…”
“…madoka, I'm-”
BOOM!
a thunder crackle interrupts his thoughts, making him jump. with a quick flash of light following moments later. the rhythm of the rain seems faster now, and the boy’s hair steadily gets soaked. he runs his hands through the lilac strands, and shakes off whatever excess water there is.
he hugs himself tighter and starts running again, going a little bit faster this time.
after what seems like a long time, he sees a convenience store just up ahead.
he get under the entrance shelter, slowly feeling the warmth from the lights.
he lets out a sigh, and the smallest smile.
leaning against the sides of the store, the boy slowly drops to his knees.
his eyelids feel heavy, his chest feels tight, and his head hurts. he takes in a deep breath, and exhales slowly. and does it again.
his stomach growls. when was the last time he ate? he ignores it.
“…”
taking in his surroundings, his eyes scan the area, and spots a triangle in the distance.
VELUDO ST. - 1.3KM AHEAD
he makes out the words.
he takes out the set square and holds it tight with both hands, then tucks his knees into his chest and snuggles into them, trying to ignore the coldness of his wet clothes with the warm store light.
his eyes close.
The moon peeks behind some clouds.
“…ahh, i’ll think of something when i wake up. if i’m lucky, the nice cashier lady here might give me an onigiri. then i’ll walk around and find the neighbourhood cats and ask them if there’s any places around that i can work at for some money. mmm then after that i’ll…”
he drifts to sleep, with a faint glow of the now-exposed moon shining down.
