Ever since I was young, I’ve loved music.
A younger Evelyn positions herself in front of the tv, munching on some popcorn. She looks at what’s on, it might be worth sticking around for.
“Huh, looks like they’ve got some gig from Japan on. This might be interesting.”
On the tv, a young kid plays the bass in his fathers band. The atmosphere is electric, only amplified by the boys playing.
“Woah… he’s my age, and he’s playing at a packed venue like that?”
Evelyn leans forward in her seat, completely absorbed in the image on the screen.
After the song, the boy's father holds his son's arm into the air, saying something in Japanese, a language that Evelyn is not familiar with.
The boy looks at the audience, with a calm, collected gaze. Evelyn is over the moon.
“He has complete control over the audience! This is insane! I- I gotta look these guys up!”
She glances to the screen, spotting the band name proudly displayed on the drums. Thankfully, it’s in English.
“METAL SONS… I didn’t think they sounded like a metal band… Oh! The bassist is called Steel. That makes sense. What a unique name…”
I discovered the Japanese music scene, and decided that I should see it with my own eyes!
A FEW YEARS LATER…
Evelyn stood at Scramble Crossing, sightseeing, gazing around the city, her eyes wide with excitement.
“Finally! A place like Japan is just what I need to form my own band, and have fun in the music scene here!”
She looks around herself, finally taking in how big the city is, and worries.
“Now… where is my apartment, again?”
EVELYN’S APARTMENT
Evelyn flops down onto her bed, sighing.
“Who knew it’d take that long to unpack all that! I’m beat. I’m gonna listen to some music, practice some Japanese, and get an early night in. I’ve got school tommorow. My parents will kill me if they find out I’ve missed my first day.”
She scrolls through her playlist, but her eyes land on a certain song.
“Untitled? Huh. Don’t remember installing this one.”
She clicks on the song, expecting to hear some corrupted download, but instead hears nothing.
In fact, is her phone much brighter than usual?
It seemed to be glowing, and getting more intense by the second.
Evelyn shields her eyes, confused by this.
“Waa! Is my screen messed up?!”
The light gets so strong that she has to shut her eyes too.
The light dies down. Relieved that her phone wasn’t bugging, Evelyn opens them.
This isn’t her bedroom…?
This looks like a garage. Why was she in a garage?
It looked like the type of garage a band would practice in, there were instruments set up, begging for someone to play them.
“Finally! Hello, Evelyn!” A strangely familiar robotic voice rang out.
Evelyn turned, to see…
“Hatsune Miku?!”
“And me too!” Another voice, announced. A more mature voice.
“M- MEIKO?! I’ve gotta be dreaming, this isn’t real… Where am I?”
Miku smiled, placing a finger to her cheek. “You’re in your SEKAI, silly!”
Evelyn shook her head, still struggling to comprehend all this.
“S-SEKAI…?”
MEIKO places her hands on her hips. “A SEKAI is a place created by your true feelings.”
Evelyn thinks for a moment. “My… true feelings? My true feelings are to form a band, like METAL SONS, and perform and bask in the music scene here!”
Miku chuckles. “It seems you already know yours. It’s a matter of the other three-“
“HATSUNE MIKU-?!” A gruff voice bellows out. Evelyn looks at where the voice came from to see a…
A bear?
Ok, now she really was dreaming. Miku waves to the bear. “Hello, Barney! Welcome to your SEKAI!”
“MIKU…?!” The bear is in shock, probably more than Evelyn.
MEIKO smiles at them both. “Well, I hope you and the rest of the band can find your true feelings soon… we’ll both look forward to seeing you again!”
Evelyn wakes up, still a bit confused from that dream. “When did I…?”
She looks at the clock. “Ugh… might as well go back to sleep. It’s too late to do anything productive now.”
And so she gently drifts off to a well-deserved rest.
Meanwhile, in another part of town, a young man puts down his bass guitar for the very last time.
He sighs, before speaking to the band he’d known all these years.
“I’m very sorry about this… I just can’t see me being in METAL SONS for much longer.”
Steel looks up at his father, who reaches down to ruffle his hair.
“It’s your life, kid. We’ll get you enrolled in regular school as soon as possible.”
“Thank you, father.” The young man nods.
Steel had decided. After all these years of playing…
He hated music.
