Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
It was the little things that set him off nowadays. He was supposed to be happier. The war was over, 2 years of fighting and bloodshed, over. This was supposed to be his chance to relax. Instead, here he is, lying on his bed, missing a very important set of wings, burnt to a crisp.
He knew he didn’t deserve to wallow in self pity. He had been informed by the HPSC doctors that they would eventually grow back.
They seemed to have forgotten to mention that even trying to sit up would leave him huffing for breath, writhing on the floor, in the most excruciating pain he had ever felt. And he knew pain, he was a hero, and most importantly, he was a mother.
No pain could compare to the pain he was experiencing in that moment. By that moment, he meant the moment he realized he wouldn’t be able to take care of his daughter, not like this.
He couldn’t even get up to go to the bathroom without at least 20 minutes to prep himself to get up beforehand, let alone take care of a child. He couldn’t let her see him like that.
She was truly the best friend he could ask for. As soon as his eyes started to tear up, Rumi said yes. No hesitation, not even knowing what he was asking for but she still said yes. He missed Yua.
Now eight years old, she was truly starting to take after her dad. His features were starting to become more noticeable on her, and it made a stabbing pain echo in his heart every time he looked at her face. She was like the perfect mix of Touya and him. Sarcastic and witty humor, along with being a social butterfly, she was their child through and through.
1 month into his recovery journey and he heard crashing in his living room. Quite odd if he thought about the fact that no one visited him except the doctors, and that was once a month. He had refused any offer of a nurse aide, preferring to rely on himself. He didn’t know what he would do if this person was hostile. He didn’t have his wings AND his entire back was identical to a rotisserie chicken that someone forgot about in the oven.
He heard loud cursing. He knew that voice from somewhere, specifically the language.
Oh no. He knew those curses. He really hopes that wasn’t who he thought it was.
God hated him. It was official. 2 minutes later and in walks the person who crippled him for who knows how long.
“Yo, Birdie, why’s your entire kitchen empty.”
He just stared at him. Hawks understood this man was a villain but he couldn’t but help think about the audacity of this bitch.
“…Why are you in my house?”
Dabi just gave him his usual smirk and he could only thank whatever god was out there that a majority of his daughters stuff had been moved to Rumi’s for her 6 month long stay there. Now, unless someone looked closely, it just looked like a regular guest bedroom.
“I just wanted to see how our spy was doing, ya know, considering I burned his wings off.”
“Are you here to kill me, didn’t finish the job last time and came to fix your mistake.”
“What’s with the attitude, Hot Wings? I’m just concerned for you.”
Hawks tried to study his face as best he could. His neck could only lift his head so much and he still had another month before he was even allowed to sit up. He swore he could smell the bullshit a mile away.
“Anyways, how about you get your lazy ass outta bed and walk to the living room with so we can have a quick chat?
That was a demand right there. He either went with Dabi or faced the consequences.
“Sorry, but I can’t do that?”
Dabi seemed surprised, if he considered the slightly lifted eyebrow as a sign of surprise.
“What do you mean can’t? You must really have a death wish, huh Birdie.”
“I mean I physically can’t, YOUR fire has left me basically crippled for at least 5 months. So sorry if I can’t walk to my living room, edge lord.
Ok, he’ll admit it’s probably best to not antagonize the villian, but he was still a little salty about what Dabi did to him.
Dabi was eerily silent. Hawks couldn’t tell what he was thinking, he could only hope it wasn’t images of him being fried a second time.
“Let me see your back.”
He was not expecting that. He had expected death threats, insults, an explanation of how Dabi would torture the life out of him. But he was not expecting that.
“W-what?”
“I said, let me see your back?”
“No! Why?”
“I don’t have to answer to you, now let me see your back.”
“Not until you answer my question.”
“….fine. I have experience with healing burns.”
Now he was just creeped out. What happened to Mr. “I’ll burn your house down with you in it if you talk to me again”. Cautiously, he nodded and gestured for Dabi to take a look. Of course, he needed to roll over first. Which would probably result in some screaming.
“You need to help me roll over.”
“…are you serious right now?”
“The burns aren’t my only injury, just my worse, so yes, I’m serious.”
Dabi just sighed and put his hands under Hawks. Surprisingly. He was very gentle when he went to roll Hawks onto his stomach. It still hurt majorly and he couldn’t help but grit his teeth and hold in his screams.
And it was over. His back was throbbing, his arms were throbbing, everything was throbbing. He felt bandages being cut off.
He don’t know what was going on at this point. First Dabi breaks into his house, tries to have talk with him, and now he wants to look at his bandages.
“So how do I look doc. Am I golden brown yet or do I need a couple more minutes.”
“Hawks, you would be the worst chicken I have ever eaten.”
“Rude, anyways your the chef so aren’t you technically insulting yourself.”
Dabi just sighed, and started applying cream on his back.
Hawks was startled, it was cold, and it burned. Which was quite a contradiction but he didn’t think much of it.
He didn’t know how much time had passed before he found himself being rolled over yet again.
“Are you done doc. What’s your diagnosis?”
“My diagnosis is you need to shut up.”
“Aww, I could never, you would miss the sound of my voice to much.”
“Whatever, I’m leaving.”
“Toodaloo!”
Dabi made a disgusted face before exiting the room. That went much differently than he thought it would. What was even worse was how it kept happening. He would visit every couple a days, then every couple of days became every other day.And suddenly, 6 months had passed, during which Dabi’s visits a became both a blessing and a curse. One curse was finding out that Dabi had known all along he was an omega. Hawks swore to himself one he had his strength back, he would strangle Dabi. Maybe not now but someday. At that moment though he couldn’t care less. He was finally well enough to see his daughter, and he couldn’t wait. He could only walk a few steps and had to take breaks but he had to see Yua.
It was Wednesday, time to see his daughter for the first time since he got hurt. He was in bed when he heard the door open. Gingerly, he made his way to the living room and there she was. She looked different somehow. She was definitely taller but he couldn’t put his finger on it.
He opened his arms and suddenly felt something heavy hit him. That was gonna hurt later but future him could deal with that. Current him could only saved in every detail of his daughter. Her soft skin, her smell of rainforests. Her smell. Wait.
He looked up at Rumi suddenly and looked quickly to his daughter.
“Did you present?”
She nodded excitedly, “Yep, yep I’m an Alpha now.”
He wrapped her in a tight hug and cherished her scent, “Oh my baby, I’m so happy for you.” He looked up at Rumi, “Thank you so much Rumi, you don’t know how much this means to me.”
“It was no problem, Yua was a delight and I will take this as my cue to leave for my date.”
“Good luck! And you have to tell me the details later. Got it!
“No promises! ,she yelled and walked out the door. He just sighed and turned back to Yua.
“You wanna go bake some cookies like old times. You can tell me all I’ve missed, how does that sound.”
Yua just giggled happily, she had truly missed her mom. Her mom was the best. He tried his hardest to spend time with her, she knew he felt guilty about her lack of dad. She also knew he tried his best to make up for it by spending all his free time with her. She was satisfied with any time he could give her.
They both set off to the kitchen that, once bare, was now fully stocked with any food you could think of. Flour, eggs, brown sugar, etc. anything needed to make these special cookies was pulled out in a flash. The Mother-daughter duo got to work.
Now, all that had to be done was to wait for the cookies to bake. Hawks and Yua sat on the clinch binge watching Disney movies when they heard the sound of the door opening. Hawks and Yua just went back to the movie thinking it was just Rumi who had forgotten something. That is until they heard a shout.
“Birdie, what the fuck is this?”
Yep, God definitely hated him. Of all times to break in, he came today. His luck just kept getting worse and worse. He couldn’t let the league know about Yua.
“U-uh um I can explain?”
“Well I sure hope you can explain an entire child.”
“You see-“
“Mom what’s going on? Who is that?” she asked pointing at Dabi.
Dabi looked stunned. He pointed at the child as he spoke.
“Did that child just call you mom?”
“No?”
“Birdie, have ever told you about how terrible a liar you are?”
“No.”
“Well you are! Now hurry up and explain before I fry you!”
“Ok ok calm down. This is Yua, my daughter. She’s eight years old.”
Dabi looked at him as if something he had said had stupefied him.
“You. Had a child. Who let that
happen?”
“Rude! I’ll have you know I’m a great mother. And it’s not like it was on purpose.”
A whimper rang through the apartment and Hawks remembered that now was not the time to have this conversation.
“Hey, little fledgling, how about you go to the kitchen and check on the cookies. Mom needs to have a little chat with his friend.”
Yua was a smart child. She knew something was off about this person. A seemingly random person who somehow knew her mom was playing twenty questions in their living room. Yua was wary but something about him seemed familiar. She was worried what would happen when she left. She loved her mom and if anything ever happened to him she didn’t know what she would do. Yua knew it was a possibility. He was a hero, death was just around the corner for her mom. So she didn’t like that she had to leave her mom with a person she didn’t know.
But she trusted her mom and his decisions. With a quick nod in her moms direction, she walked to the kitchen.
Hawks turned back to Dabi.
“Who’s the father?”
“I don’t think that’s any of your business.” Hawks stated curtly.
But Dabi was relentless.
“Fine, how old were you when you had her?”
“17. Is this interrogation done now?”
“Almost, where’s the father now?”
“Dead. Now, can you leave before my daughter comes back?”
“If he’s dead why don’t you just tell me who it was?”
“Why are you so goddamned interested in Yua’s dad? Huh?”
“No reason, just wanna know who was unlucky enough to fall in bed with you.”
“Are you implying that I’m easy?”
“Not at all. The opposite actually.”
“Ok. This conversation is over. You need to leave.”
“You must really have hated the father if you won’t tell me his name.”
“You don’t know anything so back off. I loved him with all my heart and I have never stopped loving him. Now leave.”
“Fine. Have it your way. See you tomorrow, Birdie.”
Dabi was heading for the door when he heard a faint mumbling.
“Touya. His name was Touya Todoroki.”
He didn’t know if he was supposed to hear that. But he did.
And now Dabi, the cold blooded villain, did not know what to do.
