Trust (Is A Fickle Thing)

Summary:

With All for One out of Tartarus, Izuku knows he must fight him.
Yes, he doesn’t want to fight his own father, but when has this ever been about him. Izuku knows this is best, for everyone. Even if he doesn’t make it back alive.

Or:
A crack DFO fic where AFO breaks out of tartarus and Izu is like, "well, I guess this is my problem now," cocks gun

Notes:

Yo. This is the longest One-shot I've ever written and it took longer to write than I'd like to admit.

But, I also made art for it which will be done soon. More details in the endnotes.

Breaking News! The Scourge of Kamino has Escaped Tartarus!

22XX/09/17

Written by: Hayami Ito

At 11:34 A.M. today, the Scourge of Kamino escaped Tartarus. While we are still getting information in now, it appears that he was the only Villain who escaped.

From what we know so far, it was a normal day in Tartarus and there was no irregular event that compromised their security. However, Tartarus has not been very open with details, so this may change.

So how did he escape? There’s been no property damage reported so far, it’s as if he just disappeared. Was it possible that he could've just escaped all this time? If so, why did he stay in prison for so long?

And what does he have planned for the rest of Japan now that All Might is retired? Will Endeavor be able to stand up to him, as the new No.1? More news to come.

Izuku stared at his phone. He’s out.

This couldn’t be happening. He had hoped that he would never need to deal with All for One, but as the legacy of One for All was with him, he had to take care of it. When he accepted OFA from All Might, it became his obligation to the Quirk and all those his father had killed trying to obtain it. It was his turn, whether he wanted it or not.

Izuku glanced around his classroom at his classmates, his family, all on their phones following the breakout. Aizawa-Sensei had already left the classroom to go to Nedzu’s office for more details.

That, at least, was a small mercy. He wouldn’t have to worry about Aizawa-Sensei questioning him.

He stood up, “Iida, I’m going to step into the hall. I’m going to call my father to check on him. He’s supposed to fly back into Japan today and I want to know if his flight was canceled or if he’s not coming back at all, now.”

Iida just nodded, too wrapped up in the news to say much.

Izuku stepped out into the hallway, only a few of his classmates even looked up at him as he passed their desks.

Once in the hall with the door firmly shut, Izuku rang up his father.

“He’d better pick up,” he muttered to himself.

He wasn’t sure what he was going to do if his father didn’t pick up. Perhaps find Tenko and get through to him that way? It’d be time consuming though.

At the third ring, his father finally picked up, and Izuku breathed out in relief, “ Izu, what is it? I’m kind of busy, right now.

“I’m sure. Look, are you okay? Or should I meet you in the middle of the ocean?” A fight was coming to his father even if he didn’t want it, but if he consented to the fight it’d be easier on Izuku.

His father was silent for a moment, “ I’m fine. I’m going to handle your brother first. ” That was actually surprising to him. He would’ve expected that his father would’ve checked on the Nomu-progress and the doctor before ever seeing Tenko.

“I’ll meet you in the middle of the ocean after that, then, at that little island where your plane landed, right? ”

If his father met him in an uninhabited area, at least no civilians would be hurt. Izuku still didn’t really want to fight, but it would be better this way. Tenko could be handled. With their father dead, it was likely he’d just go vigilante.

Looks like I should expect a fight, then. I’ll send you the address. Does two hours from now work?

“Yes, I’m excited to see you. Make sure to call mom and talk to her. I don’t want her to be caught by surprise.”

Even after everything his father had done, Izuku still loved him. He still cared about him at least a little. He had to give his father a chance to say goodbye. His mother would be livid if he didn’t.

Son, I don’t want to fight you,” his tone was resigned yet pleading.

He knew that his father didn’t want to. He had always made it clear that he wouldn’t want to harm his family again, not after what happened to uncle Yoichi. But Izuku also knew, if it came down to it, he would fight back. And that was what Izuku wanted. He wanted a fight, not as father and son, but as enemies on two different sides of the battlefield.

“It’s a bit late for that, dad. Your plane has already landed.”

The die was already cast. When he had taken OFA, Izuku had resigned himself to this fate. He couldn’t change it now.

His father hung up on him.

A moment later he dropped a pin with the location and a text: “ I’ll be waiting .”

Izuku tucked away his phone and walked back into the classroom, nervously wringing his hands.

A couple of minutes later, Aizawa-Sensei returned. “Class, we’re sending you all back to the dorms. No one is to be alone. I’ve already made a set of buddies.” He placed a piece of paper on his desk and walked out of the room.

The class all swarmed the table to look at the sheet.

Partners:

Midoriya Izuku & Bakugou Katsuki    Notes: DO NOT FIGHT

Izuku didn’t look at the rest of the list, instead he just turned to Kacchan.

Kacchan seemed angry, but wasn’t blowing up at least.

“If you come to my room first so I can grab something, I’ll come with you to hangout wherever you’d like,” Izuku said. He needed to give something to Kacchan before he left, anyways, this was just a good excuse.

“Whatever, nerd.”

Back at the dorms inside Izuku’s room, Izuku gathered three items and turned back to Kacchan.

Izuku tucked the first item, a gun, behind his back and into his belt loop, careful not to let Kacchan see it.

“Katsuki,” Izuku got his attention. “There are things that I haven’t been able to tell you. Tell anyone. But I need you to trust me here.” He hoped that Kacchan wouldn’t ask too many questions. He needed to leave, he didn’t have a lot of time before his fight.

“What is it, Izuku? You’d better not do something reckless again.”

That pulled at Izuku’s heartstrings a little bit. Kacchan had called him Izuku. But, that also meant that Kacchan understood the gravity of the situation. It had always been a little game between them, the nicknames, but for serious things they still called each other by their first names.

“I’ll be fine, I promise. I just need you to do something for me.” He didn’t enjoy lying to Kacchan, but it had to be done. Izuku didn’t know if he’d make it back, but he couldn’t let Kacchan follow him.

Kacchan pursed his lips before nodding.

Izuku took Kacchan’s hands in his own, simultaneously setting something in each palm. “In an hour and a half from when I leave, please gather everyone up and plug the USB into the TV. As for the key, you’ll know when to use it.” Tears glistened at the corner of his eyes and a lump formed in his throat, but he brushed them away. He couldn’t let Kacchan get suspicious.

“You’re going to make it back,” Kacchan said firmly and tried to push the items back into Izuku’s hands. “You can’t make it out of this that easily.”

Izuku pushed them back. “I’m going to make it back. It’s just a failsafe. I just needed to give it to you today. There’s a locked chest underneath my bed, it’s black, it’ll have everything in it. This applies to anytime I go out, Katsuki, not just today. I just want you to know about it. Just in case. Promise me. Promise me that if I don’t make it back, you’ll hand out the letters,” Izuku smiled at him, tears threatening to spill over.

“I will. But, there’s not a chance you’re not making it back today. I’m coming with you,” sympathy followed up by determination set his face.

“No you’re not, Katsuki. I can’t let you come. It’s too dangerous.”

“Then why are you doing it, Izuku?! I know now that you’re stronger than me, but not by that much.”

Izuku just gave him a sad smile, “There is so much I haven’t told you. Goodbye, Katsuki.” Izuku swept him up in a hug, the first few tears beginning to spill from eyes onto Kacchan’s shirt.

“Izuku…” he said gently.

“Please keep them safe for me,” Izuku whispered and pulled back.

Izuku smiled at him one more time and walked out onto his balcony before jumping off, careful to neither shake the gun loose nor let it show.

Kacchan ran to the edge and peered over, but Izuku was already gone.

From the roof of the building, Izuku watched Kacchan go back inside. Tears fell from his eyes and he took in a shaking breath, “I’m sorry, but this is for the best.”

He flew away using Float.

It didn’t take long for him to reach his first destination, a hair salon.

The hair salonist owed him a favor after he helped her daughter, so he was squeezed in between appointments to get his green hair dye removed.

He could have done it himself, but it would have taken too long to get back to his natural white with store bought removal cream.

An hour later with his perm also removed, Izuku walked out of the salon, his straight white hair flowing in the wind.

If he was to die fighting his father, he’d do it without hiding. Yes, he knew he looked like his uncle more now than anything, but it felt symbolic to him. The battle of One for All and All for One started with his uncle fighting his father and now, in his likeness, Izuku would be finishing that first fight.

From there, he flew straight out of the city over the open ocean.

Twenty minutes into his flight, checking his phone constantly, Izuku caught sight of his father standing on a small island.

Of course his dark vader mask looked as ridiculous as ever and his suit was meticulously done.

As he approached him, Izuku released the small floating camera that was in his pocket and turned it on. Hatsume truly could do wonders with technology when she wanted to. Immediately, it centered on him and began live-streaming to his class.

“Hey guys. I hope you’re all watching and someone’s recording or this would be awkward but, I love you guys. You’re like my family. Sure, I have a twin brother and parents but they were never super present in my life. You guys have made such a positive impact on my life, you don’t even know. Thank you all for being there for me. I…” his breath hitched. “I don’t know if I’ll make it out of this, but I don’t regret being with you guys. And, I know I won’t regret what I’m about to do. Please don’t come and try to save me until he’s dead. I can’t let any of you get hurt.” Tears streamed down his face, dripping into the ocean behind him.

He swiped away the tears with the back of his hand, sucking in the snot that was beginning to run from his nose.

Izuku turned away from the camera and focused on his father, “I thought I should let you guys watch.” He glanced back at the camera, “Kacchan knows what to do if I don’t make it back. And Kacchan, I must let you know because you need to hear it from me, not the letters. I forgive you. None of this. And I mean NONE of this, is your fault.”

He smiled at the camera.

Izuku started ignoring the camera as he landed on the island in front of his father. “All for One.”

“Son, this isn’t your fight.”

Izuku gave him a pitying look, “You know it is. This is my choice.”

His father sighed, “Very well, but I won’t hold back on you.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to. This isn’t about family, this is about legacy,” Izuku replied in an almost sad tone.

“Tomura will only come after you for killing me,” his father replied.

“He’ll be fine. Though he’s rather tied to your influence at the moment, he’ll go vigilante the moment you’re dead.”

His father sighed and muttered, “I knew I should have kept a closer eye on him...”

Izuku snorted and got into a battle stance.

“You’ll never defeat me without using your whole power,” his father told him as he took the first steps towards Izuku.

“Who ever said I’d be holding back?” Izuku’s entire body lit up with his quirk.

He shuddered slightly as the holders formed behind him and placed their hands on his shoulders. Being not alive, their touch was like ice.

“We’ll be here with you, Nine,” they said as one.

For a moment, All for One stared at the first holder. “Yoichi?” he whispered before falling into a battle stance.

Through their bond, Izuku could feel Yoichi’s grin.

As one, Izuku and the vestiges charged forward at All for One, surrounding him on all sides.

Izuku threw a punch while the vestiges tried to distract him.

All for One pushed him back with a gust of wind before summoning an arc of lightning to shoot towards Izuku.

He barely dodged, his hair toasting slightly, and continued to work his way closer to All for One, who continued to shoot various long ranged attacks at him.

Simultaneously, his father also powered up his own fist, skin distorting, and punched.

In one smooth motion, Izuku reached back to his belt loop, grabbed the gun and shot his father in the stomach

Just as the bullet pierced his father’s suit, the punch hit Izuku square in the face and sent him flying.

“What did you do to me?” All for One gasped out.

Yoichi helped Izuku up and they walked over to him. On his knees, All for One was aging rapidly.

“Quirk erasing bullet. A taste of your own medicine, in a way.” Izuku paused, blinking rapidly to try and prevent the tears. His body shook and he swallowed the lump in his throat, looking at his father with a stoic face, “Goodbye, father.”

“Son…” his father looked at him, tears touching the corners of his eyes, face resigned. “Don’t make my death for nothing.”

“I won’t.”

His father disappeared into dust.

Izuku blinked.

“Well that was anticlimactic,” Izuku said to Yoichi, tears beginning to trickle down his face, mixing with the dirt. He didn’t want to seem upset in front of the vestiges but he couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. They had all died to his father, they were all happy he was dead. So why couldn’t he be?

Yoichi laughed, almost cackling, hysterical, “You okay? That hit looked pretty hard.”

Izuku joined in with his laughter, trying to shove aside his sadness, “Yeah. I’ve got a few healing quirks under my belt that I’ve taken from him over the years.”

The rest of the vestiges approached them, carefree grins on their faces with relieved laughter coming out of their mouths for the first time since Izuku met them.

“Let's go home.” Izuku focused on one of his older quirks, teleportation to a known location. He couldn’t use it earlier because he wasn’t familiar enough with where he was going, but going back to the dorms was a breeze.

— *Earlier that day just after Izuku left his dorm* —

Katsuki ran downstairs and into the main living room where the majority of the class was chilling as a group, eyes wide and panic evident on his face.

“I think Izuku’s going to kill All for One. He just left.”

Aizawa swore. “Problem Child…” He checked his phone and his face went white. “His tracker is offline. I can’t find him.”

The whole class gulped as one.

“So what are we going to do?”, Uraraka asked after a moment.

We’re not going to do anything, I’m going to alert Nedzu and we’ll find him. Bakugou, do you know where he might have gone?”

Katsuki shook his head, “No, but he did leave me with instructions. And there’s one place I can check.” He held up the USB, “He told me to, in an hour and a half, to plug this into the TV with all of you here. And he gave me a key to a box with his goodbye letters in case he doesn’t make it back.”

Aizawa swore again. “Can you plug the USB in now, in case it gives us any leads?”

Katsuki, in lieu of an answer, went to the TV and plugged in the USB. The screen just projected, “Waiting for the camera to come online, please standby.”

“That’s not going to help us. Do you need to go off campus to look for where you think he could be?”

“No. I can just call.”

“Go ahead then, on speaker.”

Katsuki opened up his phone to his contacts and called Tenko.

Kacchan, where’s Izu? He was supposed to come online to play Minecraft with me an hour ago,”, the voice on the other end of the call asked.

“That’s what I was calling to ask you. I was hoping he went to your place, he just disappeared from U.A.”, Katsuki’s hands trembled as he held the phone.

“Let me ask my roomies.” Yelling could be heard in the background as the voice on the phone called for a few people to ask if Izuku was there, specifically ‘Himmy’ and ‘Touya’. A minute later the voice said, “He’s not here, no one has heard from him all day.”

“I suspected as much. I think he’s going after All for One. Call me back if he shows. Okay, Tenks?”

“Yeah, I will. Be safe Kacchan. Izu can handle himself.”

Katsuki sucked in a deep breath and hung up the phone. He shook his head in defeat. “That was the only place I could think besides Auntie’s and he wouldn’t put her in danger so that’s off the list.”

“I’ll look for a lead then, with Nedzu,” said Aizawa. “I’ll be back in an hour to watch the feed when it goes online. For now, I’ll send in All Might to stay with you guys.”

Aizawa left the room.

The whole class was on edge but no one really said anything. Most of them went on their phones, trying to distract themselves from their own thoughts, and after a few minutes the rest made small talk. It was almost lighthearted, a time for them to all be together as a class, just doing nothing, yet it was heavily overshadowed by their minds being preoccupied by what was going on.

The hour seemed to stretch on for days as they waited to see if their friend was okay.

A few students had set timers on their phones for when it would supposedly turn on, so every few minutes a student would call out the number of minutes left.

In a way, it felt like they were counting down to when they would watch him die. They knew he was going to fight the Scourge of Kamino, but no one was really all that confident that Izuku could defeat him.

When it finally ended and the TV flickered on, everyone was glued to their seats with their eyes on the TV.  “Hey guys. I hope you’re all watching and someone’s recording or this would be awkward but, I love you guys. You’re like my family.” He gave the class one of his trademarked bright smiles even as his voice strained.

“Sure, I have a twin brother and parents but they were never super present in my life. You guys have made such a positive impact on my life, you don’t even know.” Tears gathered at the edges of his eyes and his smile started to diminish ever so slightly.

Thank you all for being there for me. I…” his breath hitched.

“I don’t know if I’ll make it out of this, but I don’t regret being with you guys. And, I know I won’t regret what I’m about to do,” determination set his face and powered through his voice.

Please don’t come and try to save me until he’s dead. I can’t let any of you get hurt.” Tears streamed down his face, dripping into the ocean behind him.

“Deku,” Uraraka whispered. “You have to make it back.”

Dekusquad and Katsuki began to cry. They didn’t want to lose their friend.

“That idiot. I trusted him not to do something this reckless…” Katsuki shook his head as Deku swiped away the tears.

Izuku turned away from the camera and focused on his father, “I thought I should let you guys watch.” He went on to explain to Katuski that it wasn’t his fault.

But it is…” Katsuki whispered, alerting to class to the contrary of Izuku’s statement.

He smiled at the camera again, his sunshine smile now melted away into something more powerful and fierce, tears still slowly dripping into the ocean.

Izuku started ignoring the camera as he landed on the island in front of the Scourge of Kamino. “All for One.”

“That’s his villain name, really?” Kaminari whispered, seemingly trying to lighten the mood.

“Son, this isn’t your fight.”

The eyes of the class all collectively widened and they all spared a glance at Katsuki.

“How did I not know? He’s been in my house. I’ve had family dinner with him,” Katuski said in astonishment.

The rest of the class collectively shuddered for him.

Izuku gave him a pitying look, “You know it is. This is my choice.”

The strength and determination in Izuku’s voice made the rest of the class fear the coming fight because they knew that Izuku wouldn’t back down.

All for One sighed, “Okay, but I won’t hold back on you.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to. This isn’t about family, this is about legacy,” Izuku replied in an almost sad tone.

“But he’s not a legacy kid, is he?” Iida asked.

“If Young Midoriya is truly his child, then his uncle is the first person that All for One killed.”

“Tomura will only come after you for killing me.”

“He’ll be fine. Though he’s rather tied to your influence at the moment, he’ll go vigilante the moment you’re dead.”

“Now that’s something I’d pay to see. Vigilante Shigaraki,” Shinso said, as the least affected member of the class by Shigaraki.

His father sighed and muttered, “I knew I should have kept a closer eye on him...”

Izuku snorted and got into a battle stance.

“You’ll never defeat me without using your whole power,” his father told Izuku as he took the first steps towards Izuku.

“Does he not use his full power at school?”

“Who ever said I’d be holding back?” Izuku’s entire body lit up with his quirk.

He shuddered slightly as the holders formed behind him and placed their hands on his shoulders. Being not alive, their touch was like ice.

“Who are those people?” Mina asked.

“The Vestiges. The past users of Young Midoriya’s quirk, also all people All for One have killed,” All Might answered.

“We’ll be here with you, Nine,” they said as one.

“But there’s only seven of them? Who’s the eighth?” Yayorozu looked at All Might.

“I am.”

For a moment, All for One stared at the first holder. “Yoichi?” he whispered before falling into a battle stance.

“Yoichi is his brother, the first of All for One’s victims,” All Might said before anyone could ask.

‘Yoichi’ just smiled a feral grin.

Through their bond, Izuku could feel Yoichi’s grin.

As one, Izuku and the vestiges charged forward at All for One, surrounding him on all sides.

Izuku threw a punch while the vestiges tried to distract him.

“Come on Izuku. You can do it,” Katsuki whispered underneath his breath.

All for One pushed him back before summoning an arc of lightning to shoot towards Izuku. The camera flew up to an overhead shot to avoid the lightning.

The class’s eyes collectively widened. “Come on Deku! You can do it!” Uraraka cheered.

He barely dodged, his hair toasting slightly, and continued to work his way closer to All for One, who continued to shoot various long ranged attacks at him.

Simultaneously, his father also powered up his own fist, skin distorting, and punched.

“Careful…” Aizawa whispered.

In one smooth motion, Izuku reached back to his belt loop, grabbed the gun and shot his father in the stomach.

“Where’d he get a gun?!” Aizawa almost screeched.

Just as the bullet pierced All for One’s suit, the punch hit Izuku square in the face and sent him flying.

All for One crumpled to his knees, aging rapidly.

“Wait. What happened? What’d I miss?” Kaminari asked.

Tsuyu and Aizawa sucked in a breath.

Tsuyu turned to Aizawa, who was sitting next to her, “How’d he get his hands on one of those bullets, kero? I thought they were all destroyed.”

“I thought so too…”

“He really just killed him?” Uraraka gasped.

Izuku blinked.

“Well that was anticlimactic,” Izuku said to Yoichi, tears beginning to trickle down his face, mixing with the dirt.

The class laughed, the tension dissolving with All for One dead.

Yoichi laughed, almost cackling, hysterical, “You okay? That hit looked pretty hard.”

Izuku joined in with his laughter, trying to shove aside his sadness, “Yeah. I’ve got a few healing quirks under my belt that I’ve taken from him over the years.”

The class went silent.

“He has his quirk?” Katsuki mumbled to himself.

The rest of the vestiges approached them, carefree grins on their faces with relieved laughter coming out of their mouths.

“Let's go home.” Izuku disappeared in a burst of smoke, the other vestiges following a moment later.

—*current time*—

When Izuku appeared in the middle of the living room, he wasn’t really sure what to expect. But, of everything, it definitely wasn’t this.

The moment that he appeared and the video feed ended, the class swept him up in a collective hug.

Smiles and grins were all around, the vestiges mysteriously absent.

After a few minutes of congratulations, the class backed off so that the adults could speak.

“Problem Child.”

“Aizawa-Sensei,” Izuku had an almost smug look on his face.

“I have too many questions for right now and I’m sure you're tired. But, don’t be going out and doing that again, hear me?”

Izuku nodded firmly and turned to All Might.

All Might just swept him up in a hug that lifted him off the ground, “I’m proud of you, my boy. I don’t care about your family connections. I’ll even adopt you if that sounds good.”

Izuku smiled, “I’d like that.”

All Might set him down and Todoroki poked Izuku’s shoulder.

“I still believe All Might is your father,” it was still given in his serious tone but Izuku could see the humor in his eyes and the slight expression on his face.

“Okie Dokie Todoroki.”
