Work Text:
From a first-person point of view, Korra saw herself running as fast as humanly possible through the school hallways. People laughing are surrounding her, flashing lights all around blinding her in the process. In the far distance stands Asami, Mako, Bolin, Opal, and Wu laughing their asses off. Laser focused on Asami’s face, she makes out that smile that’s usually reserved for Korra and Korra only. The special grin that reaches her eyes and she only uses when she’s laughing really hard or when she's really happy. Hence normally reserved for Korra…
“Korra… Korra… Korra!”
No longer transfixed by her vision, Korra returned to the present and saw her mother, Senna, waving her hand in front of her face.
“Sweetheart, did you have another vision? You looked kind of spooked for a moment there.”
Korra glanced down at the breakfast that she had abandoned for the few seconds that she was engrossed in her vision. Of course, she was spooked! Her vision told her absolutely nothing. All she knew was that the entire student body would be laughing and taking pictures of her today. Worst of all, her best friends and her… crush? Situationship? Whatever Asami was to her, would be in on it too. What the fuck could she possibly do today to cause such a big reaction and embarrass herself? Is she going to ruin what was going on with her and Asami? Her mind was racing a mile a minute. Should she tell her mom? No. As much as she loves her and their talks, she doesn’t want reassurance and good vibes right now. She wants to hide away and she wants facts and answers.
“Sorry, mom I just zoned out. I’m all good, I just barely slept last night and I have basketball practice after school today so I’m just sleepy at the thought of it all”, she said with a barely there crooked smile on her face.
Senna took a minute to study her daughter’s expression, clearly not believing the girl when she said she was okay but choosing not to push her so early in the morning. “If you say so, sweetheart. I’ll be home when you get in later if you want to talk.”
“Yeah I know mom, thanks,” Korra muttered as she glanced down at her phone and noticed the time. ‘Oh crap, Beifong is so gonna chew me out for being late to second period again,’ she thought to herself. She shoveled some more food into her mouth, grabbed her juice and bags, grabbed her car keys, and made a beeline for the front door. “Alright love you, I gotta go!”
“Love you, sweetheart! Have a good day at school!”
Ah, a good day. If only she was going to have one of those.
Normally the 20-minute car ride was a fun time for Korra. She would roll all of her windows down to feel the wind on her face and jam before she got to school and met with her friends, taking the time to relax and prepare for the busy day ahead of her. Today was not one of those days. Immediately when she got in the car, she texted in the main group chat letting her friends know that she wouldn’t be meeting with them before her first class of the day since she was running late. Okay sure her biology teacher sent out a mass email to her second-period class letting them know that a substitute would be filling for her for the first half of class so she didn’t have to be too worried about getting to class on time… but she still didn’t lie! She really was running late today…initially. She spent the entirety of her car ride to school stressed about the vision she had earlier that morning. Rather than relaxing and being excited to see the beauty that is Asami Sato like normal, she was buzzing with stress and thinking of how she can avoid nearly everyone for the balance of the day.
“Just keep your head down today and you’re in the clear. Interactions to a minimum and pull every excuse in the book to avoid stopping in the hallway with the krew between classes. Sounds easy enough, you can do it,” Korra spoke out loud, trying to convince herself as she drummed on her steering wheel and pulled into the school parking lot.
Today surely wouldn’t go left… right?
Avoiding her friends was going surprisingly well today. On a normal day, they would all meet up as much as they possibly could, especially her and Asami. If time and annoying teachers would allow it, Korra would even make her way from the north side of campus to the south side, just so she could walk Asami to her next class. All it took was a single text from Bolin asking where she was between third and fourth period and a vague response saying that she would be busy all day trying to situate her work with her teachers since the championship was coming up, to stay away from her friends. Never in a million years would it be this easy to barely answer any of them today and not see them once throughout the day. And she was already in her last period of the day! And Asami… had the taller girl been mad at her for not walking her to her third-period IB Math HL class? She hadn’t even tried reaching out to her after she explained that she wouldn’t be around much today. Great, she already managed to royally piss off all of the people closest to her. It was just a matter of time before she embarrassed herself and had everyone in the school laughing at her expense. Is it going to happen during practice? She should definitely skip, right? No, coach would for sure kill her.
Briinnnggggg. The bell signaling the end of ninth period saved her from drowning in her thoughts. All Korra could do was huff, ready her bags, and brace herself for the inevitable. As she made her way out of the classroom door, there stood Mako with his hands behind his back.
“Mako I-,” she started but was immediately cut off by Mako pushing an envelope with her name and a small heart on it.
“Here this is for you. I gotta go.” And he rushed off down the hallway.
‘What the hell was that?’ she thought to herself and she stared at his disappearing figure. After a beat, she opened up the envelope the older boy had shoved her way with caution.
Hi Sweets,
There are a million reasons why you’re my favorite person in the world so just give me a chance to name a few. For one, you make me laugh like no one else on this Earth can. You make me light up in a way that I never thought possible. Make your way to the place where you first made me laugh!
P.S. This is going to be a bit of a journey so bear with me :) ♡
Korra read the small note as her eyes brimmed with tears. The sweetest person in this universe was doing this all for her and she was about to wreck it all within any minute. She needed to find the girl immediately before things could go south. Maybe she could change her vision. Lifting her head, she began to make her way toward Asami’s locker. On her way there, she remembered her first day literally running into the taller girl in sophomore year. She was running away from Bolin and bumped into someone as she was rounding the corner. As she was helping the stranger pick up their belongings and spluttering apologies, she looked up and saw the most gorgeous green eyes. At that moment, she forgot all about her friends and offered to help the stranger named Asami to her locker where she proceeded to make corny jokes and managed to make the beautiful stranger laugh. By the time she got to her destination, she didn’t see Asami waiting for her but instead Wu.
“Hey superstar!” he said as he passed another envelope to her, identical to the one Mako had given her.
“Wu? Can you tell me what’s going on? Where’s Asami?”
“No can do hot stuff. See ya later.”
She huffed, annoyed that she couldn’t get to the person she wanted to see the most right now. However, she couldn’t wipe the smile off of her face. She was ultimately flattered that Asami was doing this for her. The sweet gesture in the forefront of her mind pushed the worries of her vision to an unknown place. Once Wu was no longer in her vision, she opened the next envelope.
No one will ever balance me the way that you do. After all of the drama that I went through last year with my family and I started to distance myself from everyone, somewhat dissociating, you wouldn’t let me pull myself away. To this day, there isn’t a single day that you don’t remind me that I’m safe, loved, and protected. I think that even if I couldn’t count on that from anyone else, I know that I can find that from you. Go to the place where you found me that day and I shared everything with you.♡
There was no way Korra could hold her tears back with this note. She’ll never forget the day that she found Asami tucked away in the corner of their empty school library. The girl who was normally so sure of herself and always stood tall had looked like a small, lost child. As she held the crying girl who had told her all about how she had been taken advantage of, she vowed to make sure she never felt unsure of herself or unsafe for as long as Asami would have her in her life. It made her smile to know that the taller girl trusted and sought comfort in her as much as she did. She wiped her tears away and pulled herself back together before she entered the library and found Opal in that same section where she found Asami over a year ago. The short-haired girl looked up from her chair and gave Korra a soft, understanding smile when she saw her red eyes before she handed her the next envelope.
“Sooo….”
“There’s not a chance in hell I’m telling you a thing. See you later Korra,” Opal laughed as she patted the athlete on her shoulder and made her way out of the library.
‘Worth a shot,’ she thought to herself as she began to open the next envelope.
You remind me to act my age and have fun! So many people only ever see me as Asami Sato, the academic and future heir of Future Industries. But not you. You just see me as Asami and that’s enough. You don’t expect me to just have my nose in a book and assume that I can’t make it to group hangouts like friends in my past have. For so long, I thought that was my role and I couldn’t do anything else. Wake up, eat, school, homework, volunteer, home, eat, sleep, repeat. That was my schedule practically my entire life until I met you. Go to the place you took me the week after we met.
She smiled at the memory and began a fast-paced walk to the basketball court. She smiled fondly at the memory that Asami had recalled in her third note. The week that Korra bumped into Asami, all she wanted was the see green-eyed beauty again and muster up the strength to talk to her and ask her to hang out with her and her friends but the girl was nowhere to be found. She had no idea what her classes were or what clubs she would be in and she could never catch the girl at her locker in time. The following week, she practically spent an entire day staking out the locker of the pretty girl with the long, silky black hair and waited to make her move. It was the end of the final period of the day and ran from her classroom to Asami’s locker, thankfully to find the girl packing her things to presumably make her way home for the weekend. After a bit of talking, Korra learned that the girl didn’t do much in her free time. Any of it that she had was spent studying or working with her dad which Korra told her wasn’t very “teenage-like” of her and convinced the girl to teach her some basketball moves until the following day when she could show her what real fun was during a day out with her and her friends. As she pushed open the doors to the girl's gym, she spotted Bolin sitting on the bleachers looking at his phone.
“Hey, Bolin.”
The buff boy looked up with his infamous large, goofy smile plastered on his lips. He jumped off of the bleachers and ran towards Korra to hug her before he started speaking at a ridiculous speed. “Korra!! I missed you so much today! Man, you sure did miss a lot. Asami was soooo stressed about this envelope thing! We all tried to calm her down but I think you’re better at it. Oh, and you missed lunch! They had gyoza! Maybe we can go drive into town and go to that one spot that we really like and-”
“Bo! I missed you today too I’m sorry I wasn’t around. But aren’t you supposed to give me an envelope of sorts?” Korra cut off the boy before he kept talking and never stopped because she knew that he would if he could.
“Oh yeah! Here ya go m’lady,” he said as he did an over-the-top bow to hand Korra her envelope and make her laugh.
“Thank you, good sir. So about the envelopes and Sami being nervous… would you happen to know what the notes are for exactly?
“I wish I did so I could help. But no one told me because they said I would ‘ruin the surprise’. Crazy right? Anyways I have to go find Opal now. Bye Korra!”
Korra just watched as Bolin practically skipped out of the gym before she laughed. Yeah, she definitely wasn’t surprised that they told him a minimum amount of info. ‘Onto the next note’, she thought to herself.
Hey Cutie,
So this is the last note I have for you. So again, there are a million reasons why you’re my favorite person in the world so just give me a chance to name one more. You make me feel everything. Most days, I can’t believe that I lived my life without you in it. Everything before the day I looked into those enchanting ocean blue eyes seems so bland now. With you, I feel a sense of lightness that I haven’t felt since I was a little girl and it’s the most freeing thing ever. I’ve found my person in you and I never want to turn back. With all of these notes comes one final question… Come and meet me at the entrance so I can ask you.
XOXO,
Sami♡
This was it. She finally gets to see Asami. Faster than she realized that she could move, she gathered her bags and all of the envelopes and dashed out of the gym to make it to the other side of the school where Asaami promised she would be waiting for her. As she glided through the school hallways, she noticed large groups of people the closer she got to where Asami would be. Pictures and videos were being taken of her by smiling people but she kept running forward. Why did this look so familiar… her vision! Was this is?! No that can’t be, they were laughing at her from what she remembers seeing. Sure she was so stressed at the thought of ruining everything with Asami, the flashing lights, and making a fool of herself that she couldn’t exactly hear what was happening in the background of her vision but she was so sure everyone was supposed to be laughing at her. The further she ran, the more of the student body she saw, and eventually in the far distance she saw Asami, Mako, Bolin, Opal, and Wu laughing at her and more importantly, Asami’s special smile. Once she saw that smile, Korra ran full speed at Asami, dropping her bags in the process.
“Sami!” she shouted as she finally came face to face with the girl whom she wrapped in her arms and lifted off of the ground.
Asami laughed and immediately wrapped her limbs around the athlete to stabilize herself but mostly to just feel the girl that she missed all day. “Hi Kor,” she whispered as she smiled and held the other girl close.
Korra placed Asami back down on the ground, still holding onto her waist and just staring at her with an adorable confused look on her face. “Sami… What’s going on?”
“Korra, from the moment I met you I knew that you would be someone special in my life but I had no idea that you would hold such a special place in my heart. There isn’t a day that passes where you don’t make me feel serene and like I matter so I was hoping to have you feel the same way today. I know the past few months have been confusing between us but you’ve been patient, waiting to make sure I was ready and comfortable before any step forward that we’ve made and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. I’m more than ready to take the step that both of us have been waiting to take so Korra, will you be my girlfriend?”
In an instant, Korra lifted Asami off of the ground once again and twirled the taller girl around.
“Yes! It’s always yes with you Sami, I’m just upset you beat me to it!”
While the two girls were embracing each other, their best friends and everyone else surrounding them cheered them on, happy that the school’s unofficial “it couple” was finally an actual couple. In the midst of all of this, Korra couldn’t help but think back to the vision she had that morning.
“There is one thing I have to tell you guys though. I wasn’t busy today, I was just trying to avoid everyone.”
“Why? I mean, it was helpful to some extent since I was nervous all day and I know you would’ve sensed it but I still missed you. We all did.”
“Yeah and we could’ve used your help with the mess that Asami was,” Wu muttered from the side of them as Mako elbowed him in his ribs.
Korra took a deep breath as she held Asami’s hand and looked around at her friends. “I was a nervous wreck. I had a vision this morning where I was running and everyone around me was laughing and taking pictures of me. Even worse, I saw ahead of me that you guys were laughing at me too and Asami you had your special smile and I couldn’t understand why you all were laughing so hard at me when I was just running. I figured I was going to do something embarrassing and find a way to mess up everything that we’ve been working towards Sami so I thought the best thing that I could’ve done today was isolate myself… But as I was running towards you, I realized that everything looked so similar and I realized that it was my vision! What I don’t get though is why you guys were laughing at me and why so many people were here if only you guys knew about the envelopes?”
Asami just stared at the athlete with adoring eyes. “Kor, you know that your visions rarely turn out the way that you think that they’re going to. You should’ve spoken to me this morning so you wouldn’t have been stressed all day and felt the need to ignore all of us. I promise, there’s very little that you could do to ruin this, I adore you way too much. As far as me laughing at smiling, you’re just way too cute it’s all that I could do seeing you stumble your way towards me. I will say, I have no clue why anyone other than the krew is here.”
Bolin stood to their right laughing and rubbing his head behind his head. “About that… I may have mentioned something about Asami planning something huge for Korra at the end of the day to Wei who may have mentioned something to Wing who may have mentioned something to Ginger and now the entire school knows?”
All of his friends just gawked at him before letting out loud laughs while Opal lighting smacked her boyfriend on his shoulder. “We tell you little to nothing and you still manage to spill the beans. Come on boys, let’s leave these two love birds alone. Congratulations girls, we’ll see you tomorrow for movie night.”
Slowly but surely, the crowd around them started to disperse and the girls walked hand in hand down the school hallway.
“Hey Sami guess what?
“What?
“I have a girlfriend now,” the athlete says with the biggest smile on her face.
“Oh yeah? So do I. Bet mine’s cuter though.”
“Mine’s stunning. A goddess really. Pretty hard for your girlfriend to beat that.”
Asami stopped in her tracks to face her girlfriend and give her and soft kiss. “C’mon you dork. Let’s get you to basketball practice so it can pass by and we can go back to your house.”
“Yes ma’am.”
