Chapter Text
Sasuke can't remember how long it's been.
He doesn't even really care. But sometimes his mind just wonders.
How long has it been since he felt something? Anything?
He doesn't quite know. He was certain the last time he ever felt anything was when he found out what really happened to his family, what really happened to his brother.
But now, even when he thinks about that, he feels nothing.
It was just emptiness.
Blankness.
It was all blurry after that.
What he did he do after he found out the truth? And how did he get here in this small, dark space?
He doesn't know.
He feels like it's been dark ever since... he barely remembers what light looks like.
Has he gone blind? He can't remember. But it has been dark for so long.
Was he even living? Maybe's he's already dead. Maybe this is hell, and he'd have to just deal with being lonely--the thing he hated feeling the most, for the rest of his life.
He would deserve it after everything he's done.
But... what was it again that he did?
Time passed and passed. Once in a while, he would hear some sounds, even voices.
Sometimes he would feel a dull pain, but he wasn't sure if it was something he'd just imagine. Maybe this is just how it is in death.
And then after what felt like more time to pass him by, he heard a voice.
A very familiar voice.
"Your punishment had been decided." The voice said.
And his mind belatedly gave him a name, 'Kakashi.'
"You will be executed by beheading in an hour." The voice said.
Still, Sasuke didn't feel anything at that words. Only some enlightenment. So he's not dead, he just will be soon.
It didn't change much for him.
"Do you have any last request?" Kakashi's voice asks. There was something in his voice--but Sasuke couldn't figure out what.
He didn't answer either. The last thing he wanted was to avenge his brother—and he thinks he got to do that, he wasn't sure. But, either way, there was nothing he wanted anymore. He felt no desire for anything. There was nothing... Just nothing now.
"...I see." Kakashi just say.
There were some sounds once more—metals clanking and grating, and then Sasuke can hear several sets of footsteps going away.
Then once more, there was nothing.
After what felt to Sasuke was just a moment, he could hear footsteps once more, then the sounds of metals being moved, and then for the first time in what seems like a very long time, something touched his body—hands, harsh hands that gripped his shoulders very hard and started pulling and tugging.
He couldn't really walk—he'd lost the feelings on his legs for a while now, and he couldn't even remember when he had last eaten and drank. He felt weak—but it didn't bother him because it didn't matter anymore.
They dragged him for what seems like a long time, never caring whether or not he was in pain, until they moved him up what he assumes were stairs and then dropped him unceremoniously on the floor.
He wasn't sure where he was, he just knew he will die soon.
Then, he started hearing Kakashi's voice again, but it wasn't addressing him. He seems to be addressing other people, his voice sounding far. Belatedly, Sasuke realized he had just enumerated his crimes and announced his sentence.
Now he could hear people cheering, jeering and mocking him.
He still didn't care.
He felt hands on his body again, and it seems like they were positioning him onto what he assumes as the guillotine.
His hands were bound on his back, while his neck rested in what felt like wood, and then he felt and heard the click of metal that meant that he was now locked on the execution device.
Then, he felt a hand on the back of his head, and for a moment he thought he was finally about to die.
But he still didn't, instead it was suddenly bright.
He realized he had been blindfolded all this time, and someone had finally taken it off.
Maybe a last mercy; he was given a chance to look at the world for the last time.
It took a little while before his eyes could adjust to the brightness, but when it did, the first thing he saw was pink.
The Sakura trees were blooming in front of him, beyond the crowd.
Sakura.
And in that instance, everything came back to him.
How he had killed his brother.
How he was finally told the truth.
How miserable and guilty he felt that his own hands killed his brother who had only wanted peace, and who had always loved him.
How he had become overcome with grief.
How he wanted revenge on Konoha, on everyone involved in what happened to his clan and his brother, and everyone else that benefited from it.
How he had a confrontation with his former teammates, after he had let his new teammate die.
How he had tried to negotiate with Sakura to kill Karin and come with him.
How he had realized Sakura was going to betray him, and he had strucked first and killed her.
A chidori to her chest, that was how he killed her.
And then, he had lost his mind, himself.
He had lost any trace of sanity or morality.
And he started killing everyone around him, friend or foe, until he couldn't fight anymore.
His now newly uncovered eyes had become blurry. And he realized he was crying.
It was a little ironic. After years of him making Sakura cry, the last thing he was allowed to do before he left the world, was to cry for her.
His teammate, his friend, his one precious person who had been the little kindling of warmth in his cold and abominable life.
He was thankful though, as he hears the sound of them releasing the blade, that the last thing he got to see was the blooming Sakura tree.
He desperately wanted to see her. He wanted to beg for her forgiveness.
He felt a quick pain on his neck, and then there was nothing once more.
Or at least he thought so.
Suddenly, he could feel again. It was a little windy, and he felt lighter somehow.
He opens his eyes, and he recognizes his surroundings.
He was in Konoha, just by the gates. It was night, with the crescent moon in the clear sky.
He was alive. He's alive??
And that voice—
"--love you with all my heart! If you were to stay with me…there would be no regrets. Because everyday, we’d so something fun. We’d be happy, I swear! Please stay with me. I’ll even help you with your revenge. I don’t know what I could do but I’ll try my best to do something. So please, stay with me… or take me with you if you can’t stay here…”
Sakura.
He knew those words.
Those words haunted him for a long time after leaving Konoha. It had always rang into his head when he least expected it, when he was most vulnerable.
Her desperate words to save him.
And he thinks, even then when he first heard it, he had known she was trying to save him. But he didn't believe he could be saved. And in the end, she also was not saved.
He ended up killing her.
But this scene around him, the words that was just said, the place....
Did he perhaps... went back in time?
Was that even possible??
He knew what happens next. He knew what he'll do.
And as if he was following a script, he quickly went to Sakura's back.
"Sakura, thank you..." He had said.
But... he wasn't willing to do it all over again.
He won't leave her here.
And he won't kill her. He won't ever make that mistake again.
He won't.
He found himself hugging her from the back. And by how much Sakura stiffens, he knew he had taken her off guard, likely even terrified her. She might think he would attack her.
But he'd never do that again.
"Come with me, then." He said softly, still hugging her.
"S-Sasuke-kun..?"
"Please. Come with me. You don't have to help me with my revenge. I don't want that, anymore."
The warmth of her body registers in Sasuke's mind and he felt dazed for a moment, not realizing that he had started tightening his hold onto her.
It felt like it had been so long since he had felt anything at all.
Her body is warm. Comfortingly so.
It reassures him that she's alive. And this must be real.
Not a dream. Not him going insane.
And maybe even if he had gone insane, he would choose this.
"You... you'll really take me with you?" She asks, her body now relaxing a little. "You really don't want revenge anymore?"
"Yes, But, we have to leave. — I have to leave. but if you come will with me, you can't go back here. Ever." He warns her.
"What--what are you planning now, Sasuke-kun?"
"I—"
He honestly didn't have plans. He just knew he had to be away from here, both of them, or else it might all happen again.
"I can't explain everything right now, but this village... betrayed m—my family. But I—"
'I'm tired.' He thought. But Sakura wouldn't understand. Not at this time.
"I don't plan on taking the path to revenge." He said instead.
'Not again when I know it will only lead to your death by my hand.' He thought, and he didn't even notice he had started trembling.
He was a little surprised when he felt Sakura's hands come up to hold his as he was holding her body close.
It soothed him.
"I'll explain it all to you. But we have to leave now." He said more firmly. "Do you trust me?"
"Yes." Sakura said in barely a whisper.
Sasuke's body relaxed, and gently he pulls away.
Sakura turns to him slowly, eyes still with a few tears left, but now looking determined.
He won't attack Konoha. He doesn't care about that, anymore. If doing that would lead to Sakura's death then it wasn't worth it.
He'd learn that now.
He could still remember how much anger he had felt when he found the truth, when he realized he had killed his brother without understanding anything.
But if he really had gone back to time, then that means that his brother is still alive.
But... he also didn't want to see him anymore.
He understood why he did what he did, but... he didn't think he could really forgive him for what he did. Not just to his family, but also to him.
He didn't think there was any hope for a real reconciliation between them.
Not outside of battle. Because that was how they are.
But he was tired of that. He didn't want any of that anymore.
He'd already live a life in darkness.
"Sasuke-kun." Sasuke turns to Sakura at her call, distracted from his thoughts.
She looked uncertain, but not scared. More than anything, she looked worried.
That calmed his heart.
He still wasn't sure if he was still really alive, if it was the afterlife or if he had just dreamed everything, or if he was inside a genjutsu.
Whatever it was, he doesn't care.
For now, they just have to leave. He has to take Sakura away from here. And he must avoid encountering his brother or Orochimaru.
He'll have to try to remember everything that had happened from his previous life and plan carefully.
He just wanna leave it all behind.
He wanted a life without the darkness, the hatred.
And if he had Sakura with him, he felt like he can achieve that.
"Let's go." He tells her as he offers a hand.
Sakura still looked worried, but she took it. She didn't have anything with her, of course. She didn't think she would be coming with him. So it touched Sasuke that she was wholeheartedly trusting him and throwing everything else for him.
He promised himself he would take care of her. They were still children now but his mind was already that of an eighteen years old. He remembers that at least at this age, he have access to his family's money that they left for him, and they can both take jobs for money in the future.
He'll be able to do it.
He'll be able to make sure that he won't live another life without her.
Together, the two ninjas seems to disappear in a second, leaving no trace behind.
END
Notes:
so it's implied that after sasuke killed sakura in the first timeline, he went insane, and he doesn't even remember it and what happens after. and it implied that he also killed everyone else there—naruto, sai, yamato. that's why it's only kakashi talking to him.
Chapter Text
They spent the whole night trying to make distance from Leaf. They reached a town close to the border of Fire, Hot Springs and Rice just as the dawn breaks.
Sasuke had noted then that Sakura was looking nervous. He doesn't blame her at all. Even though she had offered to come with him, and even though he doesn't doubt her sincerity, he knew this must be a lot to take for her. With how he was at this time, she probably didn't even expect that he would actually take her with him.
"We aren't going to Orochimaru." He tells her, to ease some of her nervousness.
He had already told her so last night, but he thought he ought to clarify it since they're nearing Sound Village.
"But Konoha would think I would." He adds. "We'll go to Hot Spring instead." He promised.
Sakura looks at him and nods. She still seems nervous, but it seems that that had helped her relax somewhat. Sasuke could understand. Their last encounter with Orochimaru wasn't exactly an experience one would be fond of, nor would anyone want a repeat of.
As they entered the center of the town, Sasuke had asked Sakura to use transformation jutsu with him to keep themselves inconspicious. Both had transformed into an elderly couple and masked their chakra. They were still young at this time, but Sakura had always had almost perfect chakra control, and Sasuke still had knowledge of his abilities from his last life so they were able to manage it.
Once inside, Sasuke had lead them to a clothes store and they bought set of clothings and toiletries for both of them.
They then bought some food, but didn't linger in town. Soon, they were back in the forest, with Sasuke still leading.
They hopped from tree to tree for a while, until they reached a clearing where a river was.
"Do you trust me?" Sasuke had asked Sakura this time.
It was a little surreal how Sakura had been quiet for the whole night. Even more so, that it was Sasuke who had mostly talked throughout their travels. But Sasuke didn't try to let it bother him. Sakura is probably still processing everything that's happening. Sasuke was just thankful she still hadn't express intention of going back. She seemed nervous, but determined. It doesn't seem like—he was hoping, that she wouldn't change her mind. Though of course, if she did, he would also understand.
He knew he was asking her for a lot.
Sakura looked at him at his question, again looking quite nervous. But she nodded at him.
"Of course, Sasuke-kun." He tells her.
"Then please wash and try to mask your scent as much as possible. When you're done, wear one of your new clothes. I'll do the same. We'll have to get rid of our old clothes. They'll probably get some Inuzukas to try and track us." He tells her.
He knew he should explain his plans to her, so she wouldn't be going through this completely blindly.
And with that explanation, Sakura looked enlightened. She looked even more nervous, but she nodded and took one set of the clothes she bought for herself.
They went to different areas of the river and did their tasks at hand. Once they were done and in their new clothings, Sasuke told Sakura of their next plan of action which was simple enough.
They'll be using kagebunshin now. Each of their shadow clones would be bringing with them one of their old clothings and things, and each would be going to different directions—a distraction. This way, even with a team who can both track chakra and scents, they wouldn't be able to easily pinpoint them. And with Sasuke's knowledge from the past timeline, he knew they wouldn't risk not following their decoys, either.
They had a number of their clones go to the direction of Rice Country, towards Hidden Sound—that's where they are expecting him to go after all. And a few more to other directions.
Sasuke knew that Naruto and the others are probably already on their tracks. But he tried not to panic. He can still vividly remember what happened in his past life. He can avoid it.
He and Sakura, still in their transformation jutsu and now in their new clothes and scents to mask their own, had proceeded to go to the Country of Hot Springs.
"We'll go to Haran Bay." Sasuke tells her. "Then, well, we'll see what boat we can have a ride on."
They could go to the Country of Lightning or the Country of Water. There were also nearby autonomous islands—he didn't know much information about them since these set of islands don't have Hidden Villages, but that might also be an ideal alternative. It would be easier to hide from ninjas in islands where no ninja systems are set.
They reached the Haran Bay soon enough, and Sasuke knew Konoha ninjas might soon cross paths with one of their decoys. If ever though, they would know once their clones vanished.
It would be a little later than the previous life, but that was because Sasuke had learned of different routes during his time as a missing nin. He was able to use that knowledge. Unlike his past self, he also had a plan this time, and he wasn't hesitant unlike before. He didn't waste time wallowing on self doubt as he traveled. He didn't even let Sakura have time to rethink her decisions.
Which he now reflects on as he watches the still uncharacteristically quiet Sakura. She was transformed as a young woman now. Her hair brown and long, her nose a little different, her eyes a different shape, but still the same jade green—it always takes a little more chakra to change the eye color. That was also why he still retained his dark eyes, but he currently have red curly hair, darker skin and longer nose.
They probably looked like a married couple to others.
Sasuke had inquired the locals in the bay about boats they can rent or else ships they can board on. There were several big ships on their way to both Country of Lightning and Country of Water, even one for Country of Moon—the longest journey. But as he expected, there were also those on route to the nearby islands.
He wasn't quite sure where exactly to go, so he had turned to Sakura to hear her opinion.
He was actually nervous of asking her, fearing she would tell her she didn't wanna go with him anymore, but she was actually more decisive than him of their destination.
She suggested they go to a nearby island, Hiraya. From the information they gathered it was a small autonomous island near the Country of Lightning, ruled by a King. There are no hidden villages there as their King have bushis rather than ninjas. The locals told them that the kingdom is open to travelers and settlers since they are of a small population and that was ideal for them.
Sakura also mentioned that their old.village would probably assume they had tried to get as far away from the Fire Country as possible and might overlook checking the nearby islands, especially Hiraya which has only been transformed into a kingdom a few decades ago. It wasn't even named in their official world map yet.
Sakura's analysis and suggestion was surprisingly comforting for Sasuke. It showed that even though she looked hesitant and nervous, she was with him. It seems like she hasn't change her mind.
They had negotiated with a ship they can board on, and paid for their travel expenses. The money Sasuke had bought from his bequest was quickly disappearing, but this didn't bother Sasuke. He and Sakura can get jobs once they find a place to settle. They are trained after all. The most important thing right now is to escape from Konoha's pursuits.
Before boarding, they went and bought food once more. It was already lunch time and Sasuke had felt a few of his clones disappearing. He had mostly seen Naruto as the information his clones got transferred to him, and he has no doubt that Naruto probably used his own clones to try and follow theirs. He had also seen Hyuuga Neji, Shikamaru and Inuzuka.
Fortunately, as he had expected and hoped, they had pursued mostly those clones on the way to Sound Village.
He knew Sakura would have also known all this details, since she would have also gotten information from her own clone. But they weren't talking about it.
Sakura was still quieter than usual.
So, as they were walking towards the ship they were to board, Sasuke finally breached the silence and addressed the elephant in the room.
"Sakura..." He started. He was surprised to hear his own voice sound so nervous.
But he tried not to get distracted. "If you change your mind... or if you're still not quite sure about this, you can go... back."
Sakura looked at him, her expression serious but not giving him any clue what she is thinking.
He frowned. He had noticed that even though he had given his hitae-ate to one of their decoys, she had kept hers. It was really what had had him feeling nervous.
It just feels like Sakura can change her mind anytime.
"You can just tell them that I took you by force, or deceived you." He tells her.
If she decided to go back, he didn't mind her using him as an excuse. He'd still be a missing nin, anyway.
"Sasuke-kun..." Sakura said softly, looking surprise at his words. "I told you I'll come with you, right? I was serious."
"I know." Sasuke says quickly. He didn't want her to think he was doubting her. He had done that enough in their past life. "But if you change your mind, I'll understand."
"I haven't changed my mind." Sakura says firmly. "Nor do I think I would. I was quiet because... I just... I guess I just needed a little time to... say goodbye to our village. It doesn't mean I wanna go back. I just... well, I guess you can think of me just needing time for some closure." She tries to explain as best as she could.
Sasuke nods, taking in her words. He understood now. Of course. She had left her village, her family, her life. She needed time to grief for it. She was mourning that. But she was still determined to come with him.
She still chose him.
He knew he really never deserved her.
But, he was selfish like that.
"I'm sorry." He tells her, knowing how much she was asking for her, but still not taking it back. If she wanted to go back, he won't stop her. But if she wanted to go with him, he damn won't try to convince her to leave him.
Sakura only smiles and nods, and then cautiously, she took Sasuke's hand.
Sasuke lets her. He knew she wanted comfort, and this was the least he could do.
They board the ship and they settled in the upper deck, getting seats for themselves. He lets her keep quiet, knowing now she was mourning her old life, and he lets her keep holding his hand, quietly trying to tell her that he was there. Telling her without words that it would be them now, and she would always be welcome to hold his hand if she needed it.
And then, when they were in the open sea, Sakura had dropped his hand and stood up. He then watches her go near the handrails and quietly drop her hitae-ate in the ocean.
When she goes back to her seat, it was Sasuke who reached out and took her hand. They quietly sat there and watched the scenery before them.
They both know Naruto and the others had now come across all their clones. They weren't sure if they were tracking them now as it is. But if they are, it would take them some time. Their clones had lead them in the opposite direction.
What they are sure of is that a new adventure was coming for them. And Sasuke knew he'd be alright this time, with Sakura beside him.
END
Notes:
do check this fanart out. it's like this is right out of this fanfic 😊
i can imagine naruto arguing with others about how sasuke wouldn't kidnap or force sakura to come with him, but also sakura wasn't someone who'd betray konoha (cause they would first assume the two are on their way to orochimaru). then they'd realize the two just eloped lol
then there's two very very confused genius ninjas: orochimaru and itachi 😂
ps. they'd still have to deal with sasuke's curse mark but sasuke already knew the details from his past life, he can handle it lol
